donatzsky··on Darktable
I'll take this opportunity to shamelessly plug my darktable beginner guide, which aggregates advice and the currently best tutorials: https://notebook.stereofictional.com/how-to-get-started-with...

If you're coming from the likes of Lightroom or Capture One you will have to learn a very different way of working, but in return you get a lot of control over the edit.

donatzsky··on Darktable
Atrocious in what way? But no, it hasn't changed in any significant ways since 2019.
donatzsky··on Darktable
Better is subjective, but the editing is much more powerful. However, it's also a completely different editing paradigm (largely on-rails vs. layers/nodes), so some acclimatisation is required.

As the one responsible for writing much of the FAQ, I can assure you that's not what is meant. The point is to hopefully make new users aware that they can't assume their Lightroom knowledge will help them, and thus encourage them to consult the manual or some tutorials. It's an unfortunate fact that many coming from Lightroom think they already know everything and don't have to learn anything new, but when they fail to make head or tails of darktable they conclude that the issue is that it's trash and not that they didn't bother educating themselves - and they will often loudly proclaim this on Reddit in a rather entitled manner.

But yes, the library features could do with some improvements.

OpenCL is deprecated, not unsupported, on MacOS and may be removed at some point, but it absolutely does still work for now. If you don't have OpenCL acceleration, it's a bug.
donatzsky··on California passes law to ban ultra-processed foods from school lunches
Look into the keto diet. Fat is definitely not the main issue, sugar and other simple carbs are.
donatzsky··on The JPEG XL Image Coding History, Features, Coding Tools, Design Rationale
It wasn't killed off. Support was removed from Chrome, for what appears to be rather spurious reasons, but practically everyone else are busy implementing it.
donatzsky··on RapidRAW: A non-destructive and GPU-accelerated RAW image editor
While certainly an impressive effort, it's not even close to competitive yet. As is pointed out in a comment on [1] and as can be seen from the rat piss yellow in the sky, the algorithms are very much on the naive/simple side of things.

ART (Another RawTherapee) has a more Lightroom-like approach to masking that you might like better.

donatzsky··on The recently lost file upload feature in the Nextcloud app for Android
I'd be surprised if they have to go through the same review process as everyone else. And even if they do, the reviewers are likely to give them a pass because it's Google.
donatzsky··on Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move
Power consumption is at a completely different level, though. The N100 gives you pretty good performance with very low power draw.
donatzsky··on Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move
Pretty sure Asustor also allows installing any other Linux you want.
donatzsky··on We asked camera companies why their RAW formats are all different and confusing
DNG is a TIFF file, just like most proprietary raw formats.
donatzsky··on Pixelfed Hit 500K Users
Each instance can set it's own size limits.
donatzsky··on Shaderblocks: Block-based image editing
There are actually a number of more-or-less node/graph-based image editors:

# chaiNNer

Fully node-based image processing.

https://github.com/chaiNNer-org/chaiNNer

# vkdt

Node-based raw and video editor. Sort of the evolution of darktable, by the original developer.

https://jo.dreggn.org/vkdt/readme.html

# darktable

The graph is strictly linear (single input, single output), but you can change the order of the processing and insert new nodes as you want.

https://www.darktable.org

Pretty sure there are some others, but those are the three I can remember right now.

donatzsky··on How to Train Yourself to Go to Sleep Earlier
While I can sleep on my back, I feel like I get better rest when on my side. It's not about how the pillow feels or anything like that, but my whole body and brain just seem to relax more.

Apparently [1] sleeping on the side is better for your health, as well.

donatzsky··on Syncthing Android App Discontinued
There's a fork called, rather creatively, Syncthing-Fork. It's available on F-Droid.
donatzsky··on Hetzner Object Storage
That's not how I read it or what their example says. As I understand it, if you create a bucket and then delete it again within the hour, you only pay for one hour. I think the 5€/month is if you have active buckets the whole month, since it's less than if you actually had to pay for all the hours.

30 * 24 * 0.0081 = 5.83

28 * 24 * 0.0081 = 5.44

donatzsky··on Gnome Files: A detailed UI examination
And for how long has it had this "broken" behaviour for? When Microsoft introduced a similar path bar in Explorer (in Vista or 7, don't remember), it had the double functionality right from the beginning. The fact that Gnome Files didn't is frankly baffling.
donatzsky··on MIT leaders describe the experience of not renewing Elsevier contract
According to the article, Elsevier demands that the author signs over the copyright. So no, they don't retain complete control.

donatzsky··on Third Party Cookies Must Be Removed from the Web Platform
This is already possible with Google Tag Manager. It was here on HN recently.
donatzsky··on Researchers invent 100% biodegradable 'barley plastic'
That is talked about in the article. Normally yes, but not in this case.
donatzsky··on Liu Cixin's War of the Worlds (2019)
The simpler, and much more likely, explanation is that those countries don't want to upset China, since doing so tends to be bad for trade. Just ask Latvia (I think it was) what happens if you make it a point to recognise Taiwan.
donatzsky··on Jpegli: A new JPEG coding library
Something I've been wondering about with the Ultra HDR format, is why did you add the Google GContainer? As far as I can tell, it doesn't do anything that the MPF part doesn't already.
donatzsky··on Jpegli: A new JPEG coding library
This has nothing to do with Ultra HDR. It's "simply" a better JPEG encoder.

Ultra HDR is a standard SDR JPEG + a gain map that allows the construction of an HDR version. Specifically it's an implementation of Adobe's Gain Map specification, with some extra (seemingly pointless) Google bits. Adobe gain Map: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/gain-map.html

donatzsky··on Instinctive Sleeping and Resting Postures (2000)
Consider your footwear. Most people don't realise it, but modern shoes are generally pretty terrible for the body. They make your feet weak, "disconnect" you from the ground, and the elevated heels put a lot of strain on many parts of your body and shortens your ham-strings.

My favourite is Vivo Barefoot, but there are many brands now. Make sure to look for a wide toe box, flexible sole, and zero-drop (no elevated heel).

donatzsky··on Epic says Apple will reinstate developer account
The EU did say that they would look into this. Several articles in all the usual places. Doubt they got far enough to actually consider a fine, though.
donatzsky··on Google shares update on next step toward phasing out third-party cookies
This has nothing to do with the Google Login pop-up. Incidentally, it used to be that you could turn them off in your Google account settings, and the option is still there, but it seems to be broken since a while now. At least for me.
