dominostars··on Can Turntable.fm Survive Its Popularity?
I'm a little confused what your point is. Turntable may not appeal to you, but it obviously appeals to other people.
dominostars··on Twitter's iOS Integration and What This Means for Developers
It's probably something political, or maybe even technical (such as handling permissions?). Either way, as a user I completely agree that heavy Facebook integration would be more compelling.
dominostars··on ZStack: Heroku for mobile
Funny enough, TechCrunch already ran an article claiming it to be 'Heroku of mobile': http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/27/stackmob/
dominostars··on Which Apps are threatened by iOS 5
"Apple clearly values their developers. They are a source of innovation and development. The company was proud to announce during the keynote that it had paid out more than $2.5 billion to developers."

Wait, what? They value developers by taking $1 billion of their revenue, and then eating their lunch?

dominostars··on Airbnb Has Arrived: Raising Mega-Round at a $1 Billion+ Valuation
Couchsurfing and airbnb offer completely different services. Couchsurfing is free, and very focused on community building. It is definitely alive and kicking.
dominostars··on [dead]
You said it yourself: you did it for many years before you got over it. Just because you won't do it again doesn't mean it's not something worth doing. People say the same thing about startups.
dominostars··on Everyone sucks at interviewing. Everyone.
What I was saying is that a 'reasonable contractor fee' would have to be about double your current hourly wage, since the first half would only compensate the cost of burning the vacation day.
dominostars··on Everyone sucks at interviewing. Everyone.
How can anyone expect a candidate to burn 3 vacation days to work for a company they are unfamiliar with? For people who only get 10 vacation days a year that's almost 1/3. The money you get may not even be enough to compensate for the money you lose by using that vacation (since accrued vacation is paid to you when you leave your job). This is a huge risk for an already employed candidate. Why take that risk when there are plenty of interesting job opportunities?

dominostars··on On Making Socialcam's User Interface (Or, The #%$&ing Red Line)
Why not for some subviews?
dominostars··on On Making Socialcam's User Interface (Or, The #%$&ing Red Line)
Great writeup!

Why didn't you guys just use interface builder? Not only does it speed up view building in general, but, as you claimed, it would have fixed this issue in particular.

dominostars··on Custom UI Database for iOS
Ahh, I see that now. I guess I was meaning a way to browse the tags, rather than just seeing related ones when looking at a specific component.
dominostars··on Custom UI Database for iOS
Wow.. my first rails project was going to be exactly this. Almost the exact same features and UI. Kind of unsettling =)

Since you destroyed me to the punch, my only suggestion is to have some sort of tagging system, so that users can search by control type (i.e. button, facebook, alert)

Nice work!

dominostars··on The iPhone Tab Bar
Just be careful when you do this. It's really easy to get lost and frustrated in an app that doesn't have a consistent tab bar at the bottom. The problem is that you can click a few things, forget the context of what you were doing, and not have an easy way give you some context (the selected tab) or start over.

That being said, Apple does use that structure in the iTunes app when you're playing a song. However, from that view you cannot push anymore view controllers: the back button will always take you back to a screen showing the tab bar.

dominostars··on Notice: Experimenting with HN
You can just upvote it and see. Trust me..

Anyway, it makes no difference, unless an abundance of karma will make my comment the parent one.

dominostars··on Notice: Experimenting with HN
This might encourage people to vote only to see the vote total.
dominostars··on The Android and iOS War Is Not Mac vs Windows Part 2
If you have an iPhone 3G then your hardware is over two years old, and your iOS version, if updated, is still feature limited. Maybe that's why it feels so stagnant?
dominostars··on Ask HN: Summer Internships in the Bay Area?

dominostars··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (April 2011)
San Francisco, CA - Rails developer (also Android developer, Product Manager)

MedHelp is the largest online health community, with 12 million uniques and growing. We're profitable without having to take VC money, and we're growing without having to pay for traffic.

Your general intelligence, work ethic, and personality matter much more than your rails experience. However, the more rails experience the better.

dominostars··on SimpleGeo Launches ‘Storage’: A Distributed Hosted Database For Location Data
Wouldn't latency cancel out any advantage their faster algorithm might have?
dominostars··on Sequoia To Color Labs: Not Since Google Have We Seen This
Supposedly a lot of the bugs are for somewhat older iOS versions, so I wasn't seeing them. I figured the "buggy POS" stuff was overhyped, which it seems to not be.

However, I think most of the people who know about Color are hackers and startup junkies, who all seem to have a negative inclination towards using it. So it still wouldn't surprise me if the bad reviews were overwhelming from that crowd.

dominostars··on Sequoia To Color Labs: Not Since Google Have We Seen This
> if I'm 150' from someone, why not just walk over to them, snap a group photo, and post it to my Twitter/Facebook/Whatever

What if you're all at a concert taking pictures of the band and crowd? Or you're at the beach and many people are taking pictures of the same beautiful sunset? You now have access to multiple photos without having had to coordinate with the strangers around you.

It actually seems like a somewhat compelling tool for capturing events.

> Currently, there are 143 one & two-star reviews in the App Store. There are 49 four & five-star reviews.

My guess is a lot of angry geeks, since they're all who know about it so far.

dominostars··on Youngest Y Combinator Founders Launch MinoMonsters, The Pokemon Of Social Games
This startup actually has me more exciting than a lot of the other ones here, even though I doubt I'll ever use it. Games are rarely about being novel, they're about being good. And if if pg tells the truth about funding people, not ideas, then I'll be very interested to see how this turns out.
dominostars··on How can you inspire programmers to work longer work weeks voluntarily?
I often work longer hours at my current company, for these reasons:

1. I work on projects I like and care about.

2. We set aggressive deadlines.

3. I'm never explicitly asked to work longer hours.

4. If I do work longer hours, it's recognized and appreciated.

dominostars··on The Benefits of Being a Female Software Engineer
It's almost as if there are billions of them, with differing opinions.
dominostars··on Startups in stealth mode need one piece of advice.
In response to fanatastic: I stream a lot of soccer games, and whenever something big happens, my first instinct is to see what people are saying about it.

Google+twitter give live updates, but it's not very conversational.

Reddit is conversational, but the format isn't quite right: it's hard to follow where new conversations are happening. This is currently my go-to.

Justin.tv has chat during a stream (almost ideal!), but only until it gets shut down for copyright infringement.

I don't know exactly what I want, but there's certainly some opportunity here.

dominostars··on Why business analysts and project managers get higher salaries than programmers?
Because the ability to deal with and lead people is, always has been, and always will be, the most valued skill anyone can possess.
dominostars··on I'm graduating with a CS degree but I don't feel like I know how to program
You're responding to the quote of the comment I responded to. I've met many people who started programming late, that was my point.
dominostars··on I'm graduating with a CS degree but I don't feel like I know how to program
"Frankly, every good programmer I know started programming long before they went to college or at least programmed outside of college for their enjoyment. If you haven't done that and don't do that then I really have to question if you're in the right profession."

This scared me in college, since I hardly programmed before (or even during) my degree. However, I've found that it's simply not true. Not just for myself, but for the many people I've met who started with completely different careers before getting into programming.

dominostars··on Goodbye Facebook
If people are Facebook users or addicts, it means they're getting something from it. That something might not be good for them, but people aren't going to volunteer hours a day doing something that isn't providing value in some way.

Facebook may go away, but the reasons why people use sites like Facebook will not. And it's really important to try and discover what those reasons are, so that you can offer that value in your own product.

Drugs are horrible for your body and for your life, but people still use it because it offers something they want. You can sit back and call drugs a fad, or you can look into why people use drugs. With that knowledge, you can invent something radically new that is healthy, and replaces drugs. Or, you can just invent cheaper, stronger drugs. Either way, you'll be rich.
