domdelimar··on Smart Guy Productivity Pitfalls
"Oh man, I have to make a snarky response, but first I have to Google for that XKCD comic that totally makes my point for me..."

Not only can I see myself in that vividly, I was thinking there should be an easier way to filter XKCD comics by (life) situations. And I've found http://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Comics_by... that's close to what I was looking for.

domdelimar··on Meteorjs open source markdown presentation maker with realtime broadcasting
I especially like the real-time broadcasting feature that I needed awhile back, but couldn't find it anywhere.

If anybody knows any other product with such a feature, I'd be glad if they shared it here.

domdelimar··on How I Defeated LinkedIn’s 3rd-degree Profile Security
Here's the cached version, since the original seems to be missing for some reason: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:9tXSzhj...
domdelimar··on Meet Coin (YC W13), a startup creating a universal credit card
I was thinking a fingerprint scanner is exactly what's missing on these devices (what I've seen so far, Coin, Echo & Wallaby), but this is also an interesting solution with iCache.

Too bad about what happened to it. (Actually just found out about iCache and what exactly happened and while I'm sad, I can't say I'm surprised.)

domdelimar··on Help me figure out how I lost this bet to an engineer
Did the girl leak the information? Like mentioning his name/twitter handle or something like that?
domdelimar··on Elon Musk took the futuristic gesture interface from Iron Man and made it real
It's just a nice showcase of the emerging technologies, kind of like these guys did it (even better IMHO) months ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keHXjidUmC0

I know posting this here may be "preaching to the choir", but it was still interesting read.

Do you have hackers.txt on your website(s)?

domdelimar··on Why We Can No Longer Trust Microsoft
If you upload a .zip file (don't know about the other formats) to Google Docs, it can access its content.

There are probably other services/tools, because technically, there's nothing stopping you from unzipping files in the cloud, or in web based software. It's just the matter of uploading something and then downloading the content after it's been unzipped on the remote server. So it's just more expensive in terms of network traffic.

The availability of the tools that do that, other than Google Docs, is another thing. Honestly wouldn't know, don't recall ever needing it before.

domdelimar··on Logging in to websites without a password at all
Yeah, it's not rocket science, obviously. It's computer science. :P

The way I see it, email is the simplest and cheapest way. Although I wouldn't like average Joe to casually login to their email account on public machines.

But then, chances are the email provider will have 2-way authentication, so it would be a bit more work to get to the account every time on a new, public machine, but I guess that wouldn't be that often and would be preferred to the current way of doing the same thing.

SMS creates cost which some sites couldn't bear and the app route creates greater cost of implementation (to be a true replacement - or should I say truly disruptive ;) - it would have to be cross-platform, IMHO).

domdelimar··on Logging in to websites without a password at all
Ok, if there's a concern about still having to use some password for the email account, maybe the right way to go would be to build apps for all platforms. It would be like the Google's two-way authentication, only simpler? Am I missing something? I'm missing something crucial, aren't I? ;)
domdelimar··on Logging in to websites without a password at all
Considering the price of an SMS (which also differs from place to place), why does the temporary password have to arrive by SMS? Why not by email, since user's already online, obviously?

But given the novelty of this approach (although I'm pretty sure I read about it somewhere already, I don't know of any real-world implementation), it should definitely be used alongside optional passwords, for those who want that. At least until the rest of the web catches on...

domdelimar··on Show HN: Share, rediscover and keep track of all the gems you find on HN
I'm a Firefox user so I couldn't try it and went on to read the comments instead, especially since the linked website didn't explain anything.

It may be interesting to you that I didn't really understand what this is doing until I read the following comment from citricsquid (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4656462): "Yeah, I save lots and it's always the ones that I don't save that I want after the fact, heh :("

So, this extension allows to search through all the stuff user clicked on from HN? That's great!

If that's true, I'd change the title to this: "Share, rediscover and keep track of everything you find on HN" and also do a better job of describing what it's doing on the website.

P.S. Does it also search the content on all those pages linked from HN?

Thank you @001sky for explaining and @jpxxx for confirming. :)
domdelimar··on Show HN: What's Your Browser's Age?
I just updated iceweasel/aurora (version string conveniently showing it's age is just below 3 days: 17.0~a2+20120928042009-1) and this tells me it's 25 days old.

I'm also on Linux (obviously) and it really seems strange Linux isn't even registering at all.

This is my UA string: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:17.0) Gecko/17.0 Firefox/17.0 Iceweasel/17.0a2

domdelimar··on Arch Linux Handbook for Kindle rejected by Amazon
It doesn't say anywhere (or I'm missing it) whether he wanted to sell the book or give it for free.
domdelimar··on Arch Linux Handbook for Kindle rejected by Amazon
But they don't choose whether a book in their store will be DRMed or not. The authors do (see http://www.niemanlab.org/2010/01/amazon-quietly-lets-publish...).

So, knowing this now, is GPL still a problem for Amazon? Free Kindle books are distributed through the same infrastructure.

domdelimar··on Arch Linux Handbook for Kindle rejected by Amazon
INAL and I'm wondering, why can't Amazon redistribute it under the GPL?

Does GPL permit that anyone redistributes it or does GPL permit that Amazon does it the way they would like to do it?

What exactly is stopping Amazon from distributing GPLed content?

domdelimar··on Why the iPad and the iPhone don't support multitasking
But what's the life expectancy of smartphones and the likes? I wonder if flash storage in them could die so quickly - even before such a device itself would become obsolete.

If it's correct that at least Palm's webOS and Maemo dare to swap on flash storages, we shall see soon...

domdelimar··on Why the iPad and the iPhone don't support multitasking

What I'd like to know is why this is a bad idea...
domdelimar··on Ask HN: Releasing your business plan into the public?
I actually thought about that before. I mean, if you're really serious about a project, do you really need some jury that, as you say, may just distract you? If you're really serious you'll find a way. BTW, same goes for that talent reality shows: if you really have talent and really want to sing for example, it's pretty sad that you waited until a show appeared. If it's really something you always wanted to do, how come you weren't actually doing it seriously?

But I applied for different reasons. Not only was I awaken from my no-idea-where-I'm-going state but I benefited also from various people coming to workshops to talk about different business subjects and how to write a business plan for investors. Some of this stuff was very beneficial to me at this point.

Now I know I will continue pursuing my plan no matter what happens on this contest (although the prize would be nice to get me started on my plan so I have something more than an idea to show to the investors).

domdelimar··on Ask HN: Releasing your business plan into the public?
Definitely. That's pretty reassuring story. Encouraging me even more to act differently from now on. Thanks.

And good luck with the realization of your idea!

domdelimar··on Ask HN: Releasing your business plan into the public?
Thanks for your input. Actually, reading http://www.userscape.com/blog/index.php/site/comments/starti... made me decide to start blogging again, and to blog mainly about my project, even before I startup.
domdelimar··on Ask HN: Releasing your business plan into the public?
Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. And I knew about that fear but didn't know I still have it. Apparently jury and friends are only the first step towards getting rid of it.
domdelimar··on Ask HN: Releasing your business plan into the public?
Not completely objective, no. Some I think would try really hard but I wouldn't expect them to be completely objective. I will definitely choose carefully the ones who I believe can give me the most objective opinion. And I said friends but these wouldn't necessarily have to be the closest friends, even mere acquaintances could suffice.

Can you suggest to whom I should then give my plan for an objective opinion, prior to talking with investors? Would giving it to someone who isn't a 'friend' guarantee a non-biased opinion? I'm not so sure. I'm thinking even complete strangers could have a biased opinion. That just depends from a person to person. I was thus hoping I could be able to choose the right people from the ones I know. And let me assure you, I'm not looking for somebody to tell me how good my plan is. Thank you for you input.

domdelimar··on Ask HN: Releasing your business plan into the public?
Yea, from a talk with a local business angel I found out the business plan intended for investors does not have to be as detailed as I would think it should. For example, you don't really have to write how you'd solve a problem, just acknowledge you know it exists and you know how to deal with it. I have to be honest and say I was a bit surprised and somewhat relieved with that realization.
domdelimar··on Ask HN: Releasing your business plan into the public?
Thanks for your input. I know one should expose a business plan for feedback from others and I was about to do that, mainly to friends who I trust could give me as objective opinion as possible. It's just that I never thought of releasing it to the whole public, nor have I heard anyone do that before but then again, I don't have any experience with that kind of stuff, so it might as well be an ordinary thing.
