dolzenko··on Modern JavaScript for Ancient Web Developers
Well said! I wish I had discovered this truth few years before. In fact while it's especially true for JavaScript it's also true e.g. for Ruby ecosystem ~5 (?) years ago, with all the endless stream of test, factory, workers gems etc.
dolzenko··on NetBSD fully reproducible builds
I know, it's unrelated, but its 2017 and

> Unfortunately this was not easy to find on NetBSD, because we are still using CVS as the source control system

seems just weird.

dolzenko··on Proposal: Monotonic Elapsed Time Measurements in Go
The only downside would be time.Time structures grow by 8 bytes, but this is really minor because if you're storing times you're likely storing timestamps and not time.Time structures.
dolzenko··on Four Column ASCII
> that's why ^J is a literal newline

So I don't quite understand how that table explains it. I mean aside from the fact J character code being the LF code with first two bits zeroed.

dolzenko··on Bitcoin slides as China's central bank launches checks on exchanges
So why Bitcoin is so big in China?
dolzenko··on Ask HN: What did you do after quitting the IT industry and how have things been?
We need some meta analysis done on these threads for sure )
dolzenko··on Words to Avoid (or Use with Care) Because They Are Loaded or Confusing
> The term “WC” has been suggested for a computer running Windows. LOL
dolzenko··on Show HN: A visual guide to the most popular CSS properties
As someone who does frontend only occasionally I expect this site to be of great help to refresh my knowledge now and then.

PS. Note to everyone - whitelist this in your ad blocker as author asks you to do!

Oh well...

dolzenko··on Nvidia on new self-driving system: “basically 5 years ahead and coming in 2017”
So its not just 2 cameras? Fun, do you have a (entry level) link ?
dolzenko··on Ask HN: Have you ever thought of leaving programming for something else?
> Never stop dreaming!

At least that one doesn't not seem to imply dreaming about the same exact thing forever. In other words it might be something else if dancing didn't work out. Still seems to me (I'm in my 30s) that someone with a dream can definitely get further compared to someone with "bullet points" so to speak.

dolzenko··on Machine Learning for Software Engineers
Sorry, didn't make it clear, was wondering given all the difference why would one prefer one over the other? Seem like 'in the field' experience is not going to be very much different. Appears to me mobile can be even more fun.
dolzenko··on Machine Learning for Software Engineers
> This is my multi-month study plan for going from mobile developer (self-taught, no CS degree) to machine learning engineer.

Wondering what could be the rationale? I mean is mobile-dev so critically different from ML?

dolzenko··on Google – My Activity
I'm not the big privacy advocate, but have this turned off because I can't see any convincing (to/for me) use case for storing all that crap :)
dolzenko··on Releasing Serverless Framework V.1, and Fundraising
Sorry, can you elaborate in which way this is "does not have to think about servers"? Because almost the first thing on their tutorial is some messing around with AWS.
dolzenko··on Releasing Serverless Framework V.1, and Fundraising
So it Serverless Framework that seems to be considerably tied to AWS servers.

EDIT. Only writing this because its in fact possible to imagine serverLESS framework these days (web workers, p2p etc), but this seems to be just about more volatile servers.

dolzenko··on Your battery status may be used to track you online
Every time these new user tracking hacks come up (like the one based on Audio API etc.) I wonder why in the world this is not handled in a manner similar to Android where it prompts you to give permissions to the any specific API its going to use.

dolzenko··on Reading the Silk Road configuration
Not quite, Silk Road document is using very neutral and "objective" kind of speech, c.f. "Based on my training and experience, Silk Road has emerged as the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet today." [0]

dolzenko··on Reading the Silk Road configuration
Fun, failing to count how many times he said "I am an expert", I assume thats the basic tactic to survival in security consultant space but still.

dolzenko··on Ask HN: What tools/add-ons/sites do you use to get most out of Hacker News?
Old thread with suggestions https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4474078. Personally I feel the strong desire to have collapsible comment threads, but still haven't invested any time into finding proper solution.
dolzenko··on Ask HN: What tools/add-ons/sites do you use to get most out of Hacker News?
How that compares to https://hn.algolia.com/ ?
dolzenko··on Building a Cloud Chamber (Cosmic Ray Detector)
Thanks, an amazingly beautiful demonstration which seems not very wide known. Here is the video from "Harvard Natural Sciences Lecture Demonstrations" which is quite beautiful (just the thing at work, without distractions) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3fi6uyyrEs
dolzenko··on Sleep as a Competitive Advantage
How overwhelming the research really is? The article links to this page http://sleepfoundation.org/how-sleep-works/how-much-sleep-do... which as it seems cites just a single study

dolzenko··on Excerpt from ‘Flash Boys’ about Serge Aleynikov and Goldman Sachs
Exactly my feeling, this just doesn't make sense, if he was so paranoid about his password being stolen it's unreasonable to rely on something like "remember to remove the shell history on logout". Then he also uploads the code to some random SVN server...
