dole··on The masters of Commodore 64 games
Miner 2049'er was up there with Hard Hat Mack and Donkey Kong. Maddening but great in that the stages had completely different mechanics, Miner was unforgiving in some ways but loose in others, felt like a precursor to Montezuma's Revenge. Thanks for the fun!
dole··on Children under eight should avoid slushies as glycerol leads to hospitalisations
It looks like US (edit: sugar-free) Slurpees contain 968 (Erythritol) and 955 (Sucralose) but it seems like the UK and Ireland mostly use glycerol in slushies so far.

(second edit: this was mistakenly from the .au 7-11 page, I couldn't find reliable US ingredients either.)

dole··on Children under eight should avoid slushies as glycerol leads to hospitalisations
"It is a colorless, odorless, sweet-tasting, viscous liquid." ... "It is also widely used as a sweetener in the food industry and as a humectant in pharmaceutical formulations."

dole··on A look at the creative process behind Bluey and Cocomelon (2024)
Phineas and Ferb was actually NOT written with kids directly in mind, and as a comfortable pop culture medium between the tame-over-time Simpsons and raunchier Family Guy and South Park. A mostly wholesome, wacky and chaotic series where the good guys always win and usually spectacularly. Phineas and Ferb never really learn anything but the other characters do.
dole··on Saving U.S. Climate and Environmental Data Before It Goes Away
"History is written by the victors." It's control of forms of communication through censorship and propaganda, same as Nazi Germany and any other regime that wants to exert power.
dole··on Study of cockatoo Snowball suggests humans aren't the only ones who can dance
Ridiculous to think animals are Not Like Us, Not Like Us.
dole··on Microsoft is killing Skype
Zoom is widely used in US city and state government departments because of the ease of use and pricing, basically free.
dole··on “The closer to the train station, the worse the kebab” – a “study”
The Thai government practices gastro-diplomacy, they have a program where you set a Thai restaurant up in a foreign country, you can pick from three different packages for size or fanciness of restaurant. It's why you see a lot of the same decorations and similarities between differently owned Thai restaurants, or occasionally a family will own a number in a metro area.
dole··on 'Indiana Jones' jailbreak approach highlights vulnerabilities of existing LLMs
Yeah, I confused this headline for the Indiana Pwns "jailbreak" for the Wii. Those wacky AI hackers and crackers.
dole··on 'The tyranny of apps': those without smartphones are unfairly penalised
Scary things make people pay attention and click the links. I loathe the casual use of the term “lynching” by people in the public eye but same rules apply, using exaggerated, scary words to sell your weak point. Not saying I agree with it, but it’s marketing and journalism.
dole··on My Wife's Enemies Are Now My Enemies, Too (2019)

dole··on Atari 2600+ vs. Atari 7800+ – Which Should You Get?

dole··on Science of Microwave Ovens (2016)
Alton Brown used to have a recipe (I'm Just Here for the Food?) for homemade microwave popcorn where you can use a typical metal staple and it won't spark, something to do with the amount of metal, and also actual size of the microwave wavelengths used being bigger than a staple, iirc.

Growing up in a mid-sized midwestern city with an art museum and resident mummy, the mummy and room of Egyptian artifacts was honestly one of the most exciting and main reasons for going to the museum besides the rest of the art. Hopefully they would see the Memphis Bass Pro as tribute.
dole··on Paper Apps
Perfect site design, concept and pricing, much luck, forget the haters.
dole··on A Coup Is in Progress in America
Can President Trump Dissolve USAID by Executive Order?

According to Just Security, Trump can drastically curtail USAID with executive actions alone; however, he “may not unilaterally override” a statute by executive order. USAID was established by statute as its own agency via Congress in 1998 after first being created by executive order in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. Since an act of Congress established it as an independent agency, an act of Congress would be necessary to dissolve it. - Forbes

dole··on Cryptocurrency doesn't address the hard parts of financial inclusion (2022)
Whether crypto hurts or helps financial inclusion remains to be seen in places like Africa and Latin America. The majority of coins are pump-and-dumps or rug pulls, but after 15+ years of BTC somehow surviving, I still have hope crypto can provide financial access to those without direct bank access in these areas without being massive scams or abused by crime.

The AQS seems to be more about protecting their trade shows, advertising, targeted market, revenue streams and commercial quilting than quilting as pure art. Being nominated for their awards seems like a Grammy or Oscar, the commercially popular, derivative and safe choices get recognized, well done protest or message art that actually pushes an artform forward will be recognized by the other artists in the medium.
dole··on White House rescinds federal aid freeze
This was the MO the first time around; take a crap in public for the news cycle, walk it back two weeks later when it’s impossible to accomplish and everyone else has moved on.
dole··on Nothing Is Sacred: AI Generated Slop Has Come for Christmas Music
I've been going through my LP records and found a 3-LP "Columbia Musical Treasures" from 1975, 36 "great" songs from 36 "great" artists like Debbie Reynolds, Wayne Newton, The Johnny Cash Family, and others, and they're okay. Everyone's numbed to the 50-100 Christmas radio and mall staples, but popstars dropping shitty Christmas renditions every year is part of the tradition.

Christian radio does sacred slop fine just by itself. Gimme some real sacred AI slop, like Gregorian/Tibetan chant, Hawaiian nose humming and Tuvan throat singing

Coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, weed, Wellbutrin, Xanax... with all things, people metabolize and tolerate all types of substances differently to help us make it through the day.
dole··on Kansas tuberculosis outbreak is America's largest recorded since the 1950s
A few anecdotes about TB:

I was diagnosed with a latent TB infection received from a family member back in the early 1990's as a teen. I believe city and state departments of health must've tracked the "outbreak" back but I don't think it was ever on the news or made a big deal of. By the time we were diagnosed, the family member's symptoms weren't anything worse than their typical smoker's cough and was a heavy cigarette smoker anyway, not sure how active his infection actually was at the time but he never required hospitalization, just similar antibiotics, IIRC.

I was treated with Isoniazid (known as INH, one pill daily for a year), I never felt any symptoms from the infection or side effects from INH, they monitored monthly initially with skin prick tests then chest x-rays and after the year was up, I was done. This did prevent me from donating blood a few years after the infection was cleared; I assume there are still rules in place.

Neither the latent infection nor the year long treatment were harsh. IMHO, TB's a powerful but rather slow-moving internal infectant, and it was historically ravaging because of the earlier conditions of the world and lack of medicine at that time.

dole··on The race for "AI Supremacy" is over – at least for now
I agree, I don't think it's over just because another major power threw a bunch of similarly powered models in the ring.

I feel it doesn't really matter which country or company has which model open at the moment. Whichever company, open source-based or closed that hits AGI or something much closer to it first wins, period. We're not there yet, we've got lovely conversationalists summarizing all our web crawled answers back to us. It doesn't seem like throwing chips and compute at the problem is the answer, and stifling competition via hardware is just bailing water. I do think he's at least kinda right that it's going to take another paradigm shift in LLMs, traders and other models to some other idea that eventually does it. I don't expect it out of GPT-5.

dole··on [dead]
"Adding to the worry: the Trump team appears to have deleted entire webpages about diversity programmes and diversity-related grants from the agency’s site."

Some people would cheer soldiers removing books from a library to just suppress information and culture, but this is transferring money into the rest of their agenda, this will not be general taxpayer savings.

dole··on A mole infiltrated the highest ranks of American militias
More often plate carriers and body armor, mag holders and other “operator” gear than just military syyle vests. “tacticool” is the ironic label given to overtly “tactical” gear.
