You must embrace reckless abandon. The idea of memories being deposited into a new brain simulation sounds pretty out there. There are plenty of remote possibilities that you could never disprove in life. Most people don't think about them. It sounds slightly paranoid.
Nice. I made jipe[0] a while back to handle common troubleshooting tasks with streams of json objects. I still use it quite a bit. I didn't see anything about streaming in the jq docs.
Yes, but when this article talks about the growing number of contract workers, that growing number is people doing regular jobs and being labelled contractors. I'm working right now, but feel free to google about this growing problem of workers being illegally mislabeled as contractors.
Turning ordinary employees in to independent contractors is a disturbing trend that is eliminating traditional workers rights. Although some new companies have legitimate reasons for hiring contractors, for most it's not part of some new amazing model of labor, it's simply a way to save money. Usually it's illegal, but the IRS is being destroyed by budget cuts and can no longer enforce the law. Filing against your employer in these cases takes years to resolve. I guess if you believe in no protection of workers and mass exploitation of the working class, then it's a good thing. I personally think it's destroying a lot of markets. If people don't have any money they can't buy your shiny new product.
Is that true for tech start ups in the bay area? I'd be interested to know if the investors have different founder salary expectations for older founders.
Fix the public education system so that living in a poorer area doesn't mean your kids have zero chance at real success. We are moving more and more towards a caste-system where your parents success is the most important factor in your own success, as a child. It hurts us all when we don't have the most qualified people possible performing the important professions.
There really should be some latency in mobile browser between when a clickable component appears and when it is actually clickable. I don't know how many times I've tried to click something and an ad has appeared under my finger milliseconds before I click, pushing the content down. It's infuriating, especially on a slow connection.
It would be nice to need one less things(wallet), but the truth is, you still have to carry your wallet. Most places still don't accept NFC payment and even if they did, phones die. I'm not really interested in a wallet that can run out of battery power and leave me stranded.
It's not about leaving your mark, it's about posturing. I used to work in a kitchen. At the end of the night the manager would do a walk through and always find something not to their liking that needed to be finished before you went home. Sometimes it would be simple, sometimes it took a long time. I got in the habit of leaving something simple and obvious, like a splotch of mayo on the counter, and it resolved the issue.
I keep reading The Idiot and Walden. The nice thing is that after you read a book a few times, you can just open to any page and start reading. Walden is especially good for random selection.
Who was making a living recording and selling albums before the internet? As far as I know, touring was always much more lucrative than recording. Labels always made much more money than artists and the artists were ok with that because the only way to get famous(and make money touring) was for a label to like you and promote you. Things have changed. It's harder than ever to make a living playing music because less people want to see live shows, but that isn't thepiratebay's fault. At the same time, it is easier then ever to get your music out there. If pirating was completely stopped it wouldn't change anything for "artists". We'd just revert to labels choosing winners, but it would still be harder to make a living now then it was 30 years ago.
The biggest lie told today is that we have less wealth in the world and we can't afford things like social security and welfare. There is more wealth now than there has ever been. Modern productivity is insanely high.
It's more like a donation box that automatically takes money out of your pocket unless you are vigilant, with most patrons not noticing that it took their money. The analogy sort of fails because it's not a zero sum gain. You could actually argue that targeted ads are a benefit to users.
The benefits of this model include less attack surface area and much leaner code resulting in less bugs. It doesn't fit every project, but the "configuration" code for this WM would likely be larger than the WM itself.
A clever piece of marketing. The hip trend is away from IPAs and towards Belgians, specifically Quads. In this article I learned that Jim Koch, founder of Sam Adams is sick of IPAs and wants a good Belgian(he's hip kids!). Sure enough, his company makes a Quad and a stout! Man, Sam Adams is cool again!
Or a clever parody. He says his name is john. It's using a privacy whois and it's using reverse.softlayer.com, which he used to use, if I remember correctly. The real why also started his own software company.
If they gave you shares you'd have to pay income taxes on those shares for something that may never make you any money. Most people wouldn't choose to do that.
