dogscatstrees··on Show HN: JevBench, a reproducible benchmark for typed decision models
It's helpful metadata, what's wrong with it? Dashboards at work do this.
dogscatstrees··on Claude Opus 5.5 Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis (Max)
The output style and verbosity with Opus 5.5 is a very big improvement over Opus 5. I predict Opus 5 will be a version with a sudden churn.
dogscatstrees··on How do traffic signals work? (2019)
I'm sure AI can figure this out better than a human can. Obvious and empirical, we certainly haven't figured it out or optimized it, with all the engineers that CalTrans has. How often have we been in a four-way controlled intersection and the green is on for the empty side. There's no way that's impedance matching, it's more like Good to go boss, call it a day. There's no incentive to modernize traffic light control because it's public works and there's no capital profit motive for it in the same extent as private. I would not advocate privatizing it either because that will bring different consequences. The hero will be that new young Caltrans engineer who's grown up in the AI generation and will probably be fed up with the legacy technology.
dogscatstrees··on Devil's Arrows: Ancient builders hauled 55k-lb stones 11 miles for UK stone row
Quite easy. They were moved like this:

dogscatstrees··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Today I learned another definition of skeet.
dogscatstrees··on iPhone Duo
> "is it better in day to day life"

Speak to a carpenter or construction worker from any country with the metric system. Measure anything by simple powers of ten and simple decimal shifts makes life so much easier. Quick, what is half of a yard-length beam less 12 1/16"?

dogscatstrees··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
I want to thank the author for this. The difference is night and day. It's not just for adhd, it's just a really practical output in general.

To get it to fully work though, it has to be asserted at every turn in the session. That reminder in the skill is negligible in tokens but uses extra nonetheless. I hope the scientists at Anthropic can figure this out, it's not simply an output style flag.

dogscatstrees··on The Real Luxuries In Life
A clean place to live with minimal clutter opens room for time to enjoy other things. Labor Day and Memorial day are milestones for assessing your hoarding. Or you could just rely on the season change as a reminder.
dogscatstrees··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Were they really caught off guard or is it a long-term play by Apple who knows that consumers may just want machines capable of local models. Build-or-buy (subscribe) options. I for one would get a Mac Studio over a DGX Spark because you get a general Mac machine as a bonus. The big news is Apple being caught off guard by Nvidia buying Hugging Face. That should have been Apple's.
dogscatstrees··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
Spent 20 seconds on it.
dogscatstrees··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Ok, does anyone have a list of these new tires that I can source from Costco?
dogscatstrees··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
Yup, same sentiment here. Thank you
dogscatstrees··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
You’re missing the difference between a feature and an application of that feature.
dogscatstrees··on Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab)
When attaching the offline artifact as an email attachment, say in MS Outlook, will Outlook strip or block the attachment because it sees an HTML file with JS? Anyone encounter email attachment issues?
dogscatstrees··on Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab)
This is so cool. And it's as simple as telling Claude about the skill: https://bento.page/

dogscatstrees··on Show HN: Microsoft releases Flint, a visualization language for AI agents
Goodbye Salesforce Tableau
dogscatstrees··on GPT‑Live
I do not fully understand the complexity behind achieving full-duplex but I hope this sets the bar for Anthropic to follow. Turn-based simplex is yesterday.
dogscatstrees··on Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (1852)
Not sure why you're downvoted. Chamath Palihapitiya was a tome of SPAC heyday.
dogscatstrees··on An entire Herculaneum scroll has been read for the first time
What is your origin story? How did you end up doing this and how can I do the same?
dogscatstrees··on Local Git remotes
Nice. Claude likes it, especially when the AI detects PII and knows by policy to halt the commit to cloud but not local.

> A related trick worth knowing — one git push can fan out to two destinations:

git remote set-url --add --push origin ~/bares/<repo>.git # add a 2nd push URL # now `git push origin` writes to GitHub AND the local bare repo

dogscatstrees··on Ask HN: Shouldn't Google need to give a public statement about Railway incident?
What about Azure?

dogscatstrees··on SQL patterns I use to catch transaction fraud
The main problem with these SQL calculations is that they are deterministic shortcuts for a probabilistic problem. Fraud is not usually a “true because rule X matched.” It is more like "what is the probability this is fraudulent"? SQL patterns are useful, but they are blunt instruments. I really don't think banks use deterministic heuristics but more data science stuff.

dogscatstrees··on Foucault's Order of Things Explained with Trading Cards [video]
Fans of Nassim Taleb will know his disdain for Foucault.
dogscatstrees··on Amazon employees are "tokenmaxxing" due to pressure to use AI tools
Another stupid meme-latching name. Don't normalize these *maxxing nonsense words and just use plain language. Let's see, maybe just say they were optimizing for token count?
