doctaj··on MCP was always a bad idea?
This doesnt match my experience. Yesterday, I was using Microsoft's Power BI Authoring MCP to make a semantic model from some SQL or CSV files. It was magical.

Microsoft has defined how to do that in the MCP. It's trivial to add the MCP to the machine and reliable in execution.

The alternative would be the model having to get the documentation directly from their documentation website, it sounds like. If this was the case, then MS would likely have great docs and probably support that markdown header... but everything hinges on finding a specific web page on the internet? Seems worse in every way than MCP to me.

Just to be clear, these are letters to individuals about the existing lawsuit with OpenAI, not new lawsuits against individuals.

doctaj··on Has AI already killed self-help nonfiction books?
Yeah I trust nothing. I listened to a hubermanlab podcast and found myself using AI to take a first pass at verifying claims he was making, but everything he suggested was complete bull crap.
doctaj··on LLMs are eroding my software engineering career and I don't know what to do
My company doesnt even let people use AI -- at least not agents (it's recently got blocked because someone learned about all the security team learned about all the vulnerabilities going around a few months ago [eyeroll]. I hired 3 developers in the last year and didn't mention AI in the job posting at all (it wasn't intentially left off... it's just that it has nothing to do with what you'll be doing, one of your goals, or related to driving business outcomes... its just a tool you can use if you want to [and it's unblocked by the corporate overlords]). So... there are companies out there. All the person is trying to say is making broad statements like that there's 0% of companies willing to prioritize quality/craftsmanship/maintainability (if that is the trade off... which is yet to be seen) over velocity. There obviously are places like that out there or there are entire companies or individual teams that prioritize that because the developer culture prioritizes that. Every team and situation is different.

doctaj··on If you stop hiring juniors, your senior engineers own you
They don’t even care about profit! It’s well documented that having long-tenured employees saves you money in a ton of ways (the tangibles are: recruiter fees, ramp-up time, higher pay for new hires… and the intangibles are all the hidden work or keep things running smoothly, building relationships between teams or departments, and innovation). But individuals have to quit to get a market-rate job, and the company ends up paying out the nose for someone new.

doctaj··on Things I've learned in my 10 years as an engineering manager
Here are a couple more things: - holding people accountable to their own goals - like getting a certification or learning about a particular, new topic. This benefits the company by having more highly trained people, and the individual benefits from higher success rates or more depth of learning accomplished. - setting expectations for promotions. Often, it’s a squishy guessing game about when a promo will come, but if you’re able, you can set the bar and hold the person to that to set them up for success. - one tangible example of coaching is just noticing bad behaviors — like, being late to meetings, lazy code, missing deadlines… and letting the person know you’ve noticed it, understand what’s going on, and hold them accountable to stopping the bad behavior.

doctaj··on Eat Real Food
When I saw that protein target, I knew there must be shenanigans… 0.5-0.7g per pound is within the range that BODY BUILDERS target for maximum hypertrophy (1g/lb is a myth that wastes peoples money). Eating 4-5 chicken breasts per day is ridiculous for a normal person.
