docgnome··on Show HN: I taught myself PHP and built TweetPerView.com
But... how do I know it's worth the "price" before I've seen it? Or am I missing something?
docgnome··on SICP Video Lectures by Hal Abelman and Gerald Sussman
This videos are brilliant.
docgnome··on I'm a designer who learned Django and launched her first webapp in 6 weeks
Wow. Thanks for posting this! Besides being interesting, it has inspired me to go pick up a personal project I've sort of abandoned! I'm really hoping to get it working enough to do a Show HN post for some feedback. Thanks! :-)
docgnome··on Expert Exchange gets narky after snub from Q/A site review
What exactly is keeping you there? Sounds a bit Stockholm syndrome to me.
docgnome··on Expert Exchange gets narky after snub from Q/A site review
I'm not so sure that it's they figured it all out at the start. It's probably more to do with mantra of "Experts Exchange with out the evil" Just figure out what EE did, and then do the exact opposite.
docgnome··on IRC notifications via SSH and libnotify
Neat! I've taken up using bip http://bip.milkypond.org/ on my server and connecting with circe, an emacs irc client.
docgnome··on Mea Culpa: GitHub works well, my mistake made them look bad
You can lose commits if you use git gc but you're probably aware of what you're doing when you do that.
docgnome··on Power user replacements for OS X default apps
I _think_ you might be able to run a tilling wm in X but that wouldn't exactly replace the wm. I sorta hate the OS X wm which is a major impetus for me to run debian where I can actually chose what wm to use instead of having to obey the almighty menu bar.
docgnome··on Power user replacements for OS X default apps
Sounds like you don't really need OS X then. Unless you're particularly attached to Safari. I'm roughly the same myself. Only with urxvt and conkeror instead of Terminal and Safari.
docgnome··on Power user replacements for OS X default apps
What about amarok? ( http://amarok.kde.org/ )I find iTunes to be terribly annoying and slow. I also don't have an iPod so... Do you run rockbox on it? ( http://www.rockbox.org/ )

I've found digikam ( http://www.digikam.org/ ) to work pretty well. Never really cared for iPhoto though.

Keynote, again never really used it. I hear it's much nicer than the MS equivalent.

The wife likes GarageBand and it does seem to be a pretty sweet app. Not really sorta thing so I don't really know of any replacement for it. Audacity is the only thing that comes to mind and it's not exactly the same kinna thing.

docgnome··on On downloading books: “Free” Books Aren’t Free
Even if it "encourages" it hardly justifies it. It is breaking the law, plain and simple. I'm rather tired of people shifting the blame to the content producers or publishers. If you're going to break the law, at least own up to it and don't try to shift the blame.
docgnome··on On downloading books: “Free” Books Aren’t Free
Out of curiosity, do you know of anyone who has actually done this? I'm not entirely convinced this model is as repeatable as you think. I'd be interested to see more data on the subject.
docgnome··on On downloading books: “Free” Books Aren’t Free
While I agree, the publisher should be providing books in every region they can, it's not as simple matter of the publisher saying "I hate China, let's make them wait for the new book cause I'm a jerk." It's a matter of if they print an edition there do they believe they can recoup the losses of printing it. Publishers are out to make money.

Saying that there is nothing wrong with illegally downloading a book or whatever just because it isn't legally available in your area is rubbish. It's like saying having your friend in the US steal an Xbox from a store and ship it to you is ok because you can't legally buy one where you are. It's obviously not as simple as that, but it's just lame to rationalize breaking the law because you want to.

docgnome··on Why American Mothers are Superior
Heh. That reminds me of the scene from Pride and Prejudice where they discuss how "accomplished" is applied too liberally to young ladies.
docgnome··on Drunk scientists pour wine on superconductors and make an incredible discovery
The reason they are frowned upon is because the discussion section should contain, ya know, discussion. Not 30 pages of tired memes.
docgnome··on Dear Google: please let me ban sites from results
4chan would go bananas.
docgnome··on Increasing Popularity of MIT OpenCourseWare
Cool. There are other Uni's that do not provide other options however.
docgnome··on Taking a break from Ubuntu
Doh. I meant compared to TextMate. Sorry, I wasn't clear.
docgnome··on Taking a break from Ubuntu
Or, ya know, emacs, which is nearly a zillion times more customizable and Free both as in beer and freedom.
docgnome··on Increasing Popularity of MIT OpenCourseWare
This is one of the only things that really annoys me about these courses, is that they are often only available via iTunes U. I don't have, nor do I want, iTunes. I shouldn't have to fire up a VM to access "open" content. I deal with it but it bugs the crap out of me.
docgnome··on Whats New in Emacs 24
I really hope so. Mostly concurrency.
docgnome··on Minimalism: It Works
That's why we love Arc90's Readability http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/ No longer do we have to care what ugly fonts or color schemes people use when posting blog articles.
docgnome··on Poll: How old were you when you started programming?
My brother in law (to be) started teaching me C++ on a road trip. When we got back I snagged a old Apple IIe from the high school that they were just tossing. After a few months of Apple Basic and a giant program where I didn't leave enough room between lines to fix a bug... I went back to C++
docgnome··on Delicious's Data Policy is Like Setting a Museum on Fire
They also have an export tool.
docgnome··on Begging for Your Pay
Seems like a crap argument to me. If you're not being paid what differences does it make if you have a "job" or not.
docgnome··on Database development mistakes made by application developers
I think this has more to do with people hating to write CRUD vs crafting queries for a report of some sort. I can see the argueement for thinking about SQL as wasting brain power when you're just doing simple interactions.
docgnome··on "Do you listen to music while coding?" An analysis.
Not sure about the parent poster, but in my case, yes. Well. The head honcho's for that department anyway.
docgnome··on "Do you listen to music while coding?" An analysis.
I work in an open plan office as well... And it is a mix of client facing staff and developers. For them it works really well. Not so much for us devs. Sennheiser CX300-B's are a real life saver. I tend to listen to Daft Punk or other music that I know really well (with the general exception of classical). I have found that brown noise also works very well.
docgnome··on "Do you listen to music while coding?" An analysis.
Interesting. I can't listen to classical music when coding. I think it's because I'm used to listening to that particular style actively rather than passively as I'm used to with most music.
docgnome··on HN Office Hours
I'd suggest adding IRC handle to the ways of contact.
