dobbsbob··on Gene Simmons: Rock is dead, file sharing killed it
Horribad commerical glam rock is dead, there's probably more bands than ever right now my local concert listings section is 7 pages long clearly people are still making music.
dobbsbob··on Notes on XKCD's “Pixels”
Also found that decision strange, I would've assumed the average viewer would pull out their phone (Chrome or Safari) and check the site since nobody has a desktop or laptop anymore. I look like a time traveler from the past wandering the streets with my antiquated IBM thinkpad.
dobbsbob··on Analyzing the FBI’s Explanation of How They Located Silk Road
Then you shill your service with a pseudonym connected to your real name so they find you anyway
dobbsbob··on Analyzing the FBI’s Explanation of How They Located Silk Road
They probably won't argue this in front of a jury since it's a pre-trial motion to challenge the evidence the FBI collected. No idea how a judge will understand this, I guess they bring in experts to testify if the FBI's claim is possible or not.
dobbsbob··on The FBI Says How It ‘Legally’ Pinpointed Silk Road’s Server
Tails has an 'unsafe browser' so you can log into wifi gateways then start the regular browser. If I'm a federal agent in need to decloak Tails users I would probably target that script that disables the firewall that any unprivileged user can run. If you don't need the script probably a good idea to build Tails without it
dobbsbob··on The FBI Says How It ‘Legally’ Pinpointed Silk Road’s Server
The preferred way is to use Tails on a dvd since the entire point of a privacy live dvd is not to leave local evidence and run it in memory only.

A separate $40 ARM box, running some kind of open firewall software (openbsd, m0n0wall, pfsense) that blocks all outgoing traffic that isn't tor is also preferred than trusting say, Virtualbox NAT, which likely leaks host IP to the guest and your VM state to the host.

A bonus to having a dedicated system for whatever secret squirrel things you're doing is it's a physical barrier protecting you from yourself, like when Sabu accidentally logged into IRC in the clear. It's also a good idea to build your own Tails source and hardcode a gigantic password into the startup scripts. This is the "I'm too drunk to be doing this" protection should you ever be faced off your ass and think it's a great idea to go on IRC and taunt the feds or check your sales PMs for the booters and carberp mods you're peddling on not_legaL_hax4sale.ru forums. After 10 tries and failing you'll either pass out or hulk smash the box either way you will not wake up in jail.

dobbsbob··on Why doctors are sick of their profession
Problem with social health care is of course each successive government tries to purposely run it into the ground in my country so they can point to it's failures and claim we must adopt a US style private insurance method.

Another problem is creeping fees. Most clinics, hospitals ect all nickle and dime you for fees here which add up even though they aren't supposed to. Some regional health authorities here charge a flat monthly tax, which if you can't pay or are in arrears you're screwed and have to pay cash to these clinics. Because there is a standardized rate you're going to pay $135 just to talk to a doctor for 5 minutes because there's no low income clinics, all rates are the same.

Source: my young, foolish self who had to pay this out numerous times to clinics for being behind on taxes.

It's good that this works where you live but you need to be hyper vigilant on who is elected to govern your health authority, which is a huge downside of any kind of socialization of medicine. Governments are fleeting, the next one could purposely sabotage it to satisfy insurance lobbyists or be so incompetent they accidentally let it all go to hell.

dobbsbob··on Why doctors are sick of their profession
Surprised the average income for a GP is $161,000 in the US, thought they would be paid more than Canadian MDs who's average is $300k http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/healt...

Canada also heavily relies on US medical labs in Houston. I had to have a blood analysis done as part of a health check for a work contract years ago and my provincial health authority shipped my samples there for testing. It's cheaper for Canada to outsource all this work to Americans wonder what they are paying lab technicians.

Since being a prosecutor is always a stepping stone to higher public office this is unlikely to change. Jurors can nullify laws however they are never told of that option http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/26/nyregion/26jury.html?_r=2&...
dobbsbob··on I Went from Grad School to Prison
It is in some states, like Texas. They do forced labor outside (hoe squad), and none of the buildings are air conditioned so the inmates and guards go bezerk in the 40deg C heat. Texas tribune keeps a list of inmates and almost everybody is in their for some petty drug crime.
dobbsbob··on The secret life of SIM cards (2013)
Most carriers like Wind sell phones with SIM apps to control your account, also there were a few banking apps done like this http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/1063949/cibc-and-rogers-comp...

I played around with a TurboSim for a while too back when I was testing out a SIM card 'firewall' that would block the carrier programmed SIM from responding to OTA updates or type-0 stealth SMS and other bad things http://www.bladox.com/ then phones with wifi that didn't require a SIM came out.

dobbsbob··on Harry Potter and the Cryptocurrency of Stars
CIS/Russian org crime groups can soon buy a bunch of Stellers with fraudulent cards through Stripe, cash them out through p2p methods. Why bother carding and fencing iphones and laptops when you can just buy Stellers and convert them to bitcoins or wire transfers directly.
dobbsbob··on Justin.tv has shut down
This is also what I used it for, watching Star Trek TNG streams while waiting for software to compile with General Grin and other custom comedy segments the channel operators made between eps. The whole point was socialTV where you could lol about how ridiculous some of the characters were with other fans in chat. The ancient aliens channel was also comedy gold, his hair gets bigger with every season.

dobbsbob··on William Shatner reviews Facebook Mentions
Probably has more to do with wealthy access to the best medical care/prevention. As for being 'with it' I'm sure having a wife 27yrs younger helps. Plus he already had a handheld device in the 1960s so second nature to him :P
dobbsbob··on Prosecutors Are Reading Emails From Inmates to Lawyers
That price is just for the lawyers time too, there's many other costs like billing for photo copies, calls, court fees, couriers to deliver registered mail, everything is charged unless quoted a flat fee from a McLawyer.
dobbsbob··on A Conversation with Edward Snowden at HOPE X [video]
If Snowden ever does get a trial, they won't prosecute him for anything he leaked to avoid his justifiable defense. He admitted transporting classified docs to China that were never released because the information did not involve illegal surveillance. They can put him away for life just for admitting to mishandling top secret data regardless if he released it or not. Pretty sure there are clear rules on storing that data and none include taking it on laptops to China encrypted by software likely not approved. He can never come back because of talking too much to the media, all that can be used against him

Watch this http://youtu.be/6wXkI4t7nuc then imagine you are a federal prosecutor tasked with prosecuting Snowden. Go through all his interviews and find crimes he admitted to not related to the 200k docs he sent to journalists to prevent any defense. Bonus points find inconsistent statements you can manipulate to claim he is a liar to further wash away any defense. Automated tools to grab indiscriminate secret docs, illegal transportation, tons of potential crimes there based on his own admissions alone.

dobbsbob··on Show HN: Star Trek DS9 Episodes Worth Watching
DS9 gets good as soon as Sisko has the goatee. TNG post beard as well. If you watch DS9 Ep 04x02 you'll notice a familiar phrase shouted by the hilarious klingon guy 'we do not forgive, or forget' which was played in a raid chatroom back in 2004 and soon afterwards appeared in call to arms threads

dobbsbob··on Squatter doesn't sit well with Airbnb host
Yep, media usually hypes these delinquent tenant stories though they are probably rare. Lot's of "Freeman-on-the-land" stories of squatters refusing to pay rent for 1-3 mos and landlord's can't evict them. Every story they interview some shady property management corp who insists all renter laws must be weakened.

A story the media hasn't done yet is how often traveling sex workers use Airbnb for incall. 2-3 workers will travel to different cities together and then use the apartment to turn tricks. Perfect incall solution instead of using hotels which charge extra for guests or clamp down on visitors. I'm sure there's a small minority of tenants using Airbnb to import narcotics or fraud hardware like ATM skimmers too, can always claim the previous tenant ordered the box full of drugs and you had no knowledge.

dobbsbob··on People Hate Bankers Because People Are Ignorant
Samuel Johnson defined bankers in the eighteenth century as "One that trafficks in money". Italian Kings in the fifteenth century had them expelled or executed. Solon of Athens couldn't stand them either. The three major Western religions also forbid the collection of interest on loans, further casting bankers into the depths of hell /s
dobbsbob··on Ask HN: Will the net-neutrality be looking to throttle illegal downloading?
It's more about ISPs acting like cable companies where you are forced to pay for different service tiers. If you want to watch youtube or netflix you have to pay extra otherwise they will throttle your connection to those sites. A lot of ISPs where I am (not in US) already throttle default torrent ports for most of the popular clients like utorrent/bitTorrent so p2p file-sharing is already a target.
dobbsbob··on Arc4random in libressl 2.0.2
OpenSSL doesn't handle it any better. As per Matthew D Green "It's like asking whether the crew of the Space Shuttle should have parachutes to protect them in the event that the shuttle explodes. OpenSSL says 'yes,' LibreSSL says a better idea would be to prevent the shuttle from exploding in the first place".

LibreSSL isn't even production ready yet, getentropy_linux.c is still in the tree getting worked on, and the sysctl method works (for now) with (most) linux kernels as a failsafe API to gather entropy while inside a chroot/file descriptors exhausted.

For all we know next month kernel.org could roll out a new failsafe API for entropy collection and finally kill off sysctl.
