too many arm chair game devs who think they know better in this thread

This is the "Read Me First" page on a site absolutely full of documentation...
dnrvs··on I built something that changed my friend group's social fabric
i built the same thing (though only the notifier, not all the stat tracking) for my friend group back in 2017 when PUBG came out and we were trying to play together as often as we could. can confirm it worked great.

i eventually moved the bot to glitch.com (rip) where we could collaborate on it and it evolved into a monster of in jokes and utilities. it's going offline this week unless i can find the time to migrate it off glitch

dnrvs··on Launch HN: Airhart Aeronautics (YC S22) – A modern personal airplane
> In the US, trips that are 50-300 miles are almost all done by car because that distance is too short for commercial airlines and too far for public transportation.

How can the solution be worse cars rather than better public transport?

dnrvs··on How I came to write “Tidy First?” tl;dr it took 18 years
is Tidy First? a book I can read or does it require reading the substack in reverse order?
dnrvs··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
"garbage collect some processes" is an incredibly poor choice of words to use in a post about laying off 10,000 people through no fault of their own...

dnrvs··on The dictatorship of the articulate
The article is arguing that the people the author agrees with should have more authority to do what they want and the people they disagree with should have less. And when those people won't leave then "we need to be okay ruffling some feathers". Sounds pretty fascist aligning to me.
dnrvs··on Shottr – macOS Screenshot Utility
I was ready to be "just another screenshot app" but then I saw the distance measure tool, that's very cool
dnrvs··on Deno Deploy Beta 2
Typescript/Deno is very ergonomic and presents a lower barrier for entry for writing web servers. However, it's a relatively large and slow to start runtime which makes it less than ideal for developer tools.

You should use the right tool for the job. Not every language is good for every job or every person.

Looks great! A few years ago I built basically the same thing as a simple web app: https://tz.now.sh/
dnrvs··on Sir Kazuo Ishiguro warns of young authors self-censoring out of 'fear'
I don't think you understand newspeak. The words on the right mean the same as the original meaning of the word on the left. The meanings of words change over time, languages do that.
dnrvs··on Sir Kazuo Ishiguro warns of young authors self-censoring out of 'fear'
> "I think there are very valid parts of this argument about appropriation of voice," he added, saying he believes "we do have the obligation to teach ourselves and to do research and to treat people with respect if we're going to have them feature in our work".

> He said there must be "decency towards people outside of one's own immediate experience".

This is the key point. If you are not doing your research, misrepresenting people or not showing the respect people deserve you should to be called out. From my point of view it looks like the people complaining about self-censorship are just being told to show common decency and they don't like that

dnrvs··on RIP Google Music
I'm now on Apple Music, after a year or so of being very unhappy using Spotify. It does the streaming big catalogue of music + upload your own and stream it too that I need. I love the ease of paying for a service and streaming any music I want but there's a bunch of stuff I own from bandcamp or cds which aren't on any streaming provider and I want them to be a part of my library too. Google Music did it well for me for a long time; Apple Music is doing it alright enough for me now. Apple Music in iTunes is absolute garbage on both mac and windows, but the android app works well.
