dnqthao··on WhatsApp doesn't understand the web
It is a very simple reason. They don't want to support multiple devices login as the same time to the same account. The reason for this I think it is because of their architecture constraints: - Currently, they are storing all the messages on the phone. So once the message is received by the phone, it will be removed from Whatsapp server. This can save the storage and processing cost on the server. If you want to support multiple clients, you need to save those messages on the server for a period of time (e.g. a few weeks).

- If you allow two clients online at the same time, you need to support "carbon copy" meaning you need to send the messages to all the clients and keep the status of the messages in sync. This will take a lot of processing on the server side.

- When a client offline for a long time goes online, you also need to sync from the server all the messages that were sent during the client is offline.

So their architecture was built in such a way that the processing power on the server side is limited to the minimum. I believe that they may change its strategy in the future. However, it will take time.

dnqthao··on Gravity visualized (2012) [video]
I have no comments about the demo in the video. However, from what I understand about GR, the important concept is that mass bends space-time (3D space and 1D time). Time and space in GR is inseparable. This is an important concept.

So the next question is why in GR, the two mass objects gravitated each other. It is because in GR, object follows the geodesics (i.e. straight line, shortest path) in space-time. So imagine, if there is only 1 object, it will follow the geodesics of spacetime with space coordinates being constant and time coordinate is changing with a constant rate.

However, if another object is placed near it, it will bend the space time surrounding it. So now, the geodesic is not "straight" anymore. The new geodesic will include changes in the space coordinates ( object moving nearer to each other).

So there is actually no pull force of gravity, it justs that the spacetime is curved thus the "straight line" now appears "curved" in our perspective.

The encryption use is PKCS #5 (5.3 PBE with MD5 and DES). The algorithms are outdated but in the subsequent release we can update it to SHA-2 and AES-256.

We cannot do PFS because we have the feature that a person can login to different devices and can still see the same messages and continue the chat ( given that he knows the chat password)

We are using PBE for the messages in the secure chat ( you can choose whether to start a normal chat or a secure one ).

The encryption is done on the client side, so the message going through the network ,storing on the server are all encrypted. Only when you type the correct password then you can decrypt the message.

Maybe you can elaborate more on this.
dnqthao··on Show HN: ccPing, a secure messenger
The message will be encrypted on the client side (iphone , android or PC ) , so the message sent over the network are already encrypted using the password provided by the user. So only when the user type in the correct password then he can decrypted it. If he forgot the password , so sad, the message cannot be read anymore.

dnqthao··on All around the world, labour is losing out to capital
Marx predicted it long time ago.

"According to Marxist analysis, class conflict within capitalism arises due to intensifying contradictions between highly-productive mechanized and socialized production performed by the proletariat, and private ownership and private appropriation of the surplus product in the form of surplus value (profit) by a small minority of private owners called the bourgeoisie."

dnqthao··on A Holiday in Honor of the Korean Writing System
Yes, you are right, nowadays Vietnamese did not use Chu Nom anymore. I think the main reason is because of its complexity.
dnqthao··on A Holiday in Honor of the Korean Writing System
The simplicity of Hangul is partly because of the simplicity in the Korean syllables. It will be much harder to derive a simple writing system for a complex-sounding language like Vietnamese or English.

Btw, for the 3 countries, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, that were influenced by Chinese writing deeply, each of them has a different approach.

Korean came out with its Hangul writing system. Japanese came out with hiragana and katakana (together with Kanji). Vietnamese came out with Chu Nom ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chu_nom) , a logographic script that is even more complex than Chinese characters.
