dnate··on Ecstasy as a Remedy for PTSD? You Probably Have Some Questions
Compared to cocaine, smoking and the like it is not very probable that anyone becomes psychologically dependent on it because of the way it works:

It releases serotonin stored in your body, and thus depletes those stores. So multiple doses feel less and less good. The body needs several weeks/months to refill those serotonin storages. All you do is risk getting serotonin syndrome [1] which is a whole other story/problem. But becoming "addicted" (physically or psychologically) in the classical sense is not an immediate issue as it is with cocaine, smoking, weed, etc.

dnate··on How to explain infinity to kids
> Instead we can decisively say that there is another number after infinity, which is called “infinity plus one”.

I see a problem with saying that. One of my earliest troubles when dealing with infinity in algebra was understanding, that you cannot add or subtract real numbers from infinity to make it something else.

e.g. inifnity - infinity is not 0. Suddenly saying that infinity + 1 \neq inifinity would just make it more confusing.

The article is a nice mind exercise but IMO not really helpful in explaining infinity to a child.

dnate··on How work kills us
> AI and automation will almost certainly make things worse

This quote is followed by percentages of jobs being at risk.

But I find it not convincing at all. There are measures society can take to care for the unemployed. And realistically speaking, I look forward to a future where AI and automation makes most of our manual labor jobs obsolete.

dnate··on Dev Watercooler: World of Warcraft Classic
I was surprised to find a game as big as WoW to have a data strucutre which clearly violates some basic forms [1] of database formalization. Isn't database normalizaton something that any cs program teaches in the first few semesters?

dnate··on Netflix suffers first massive global outage
I hope they release a post mortem about this. Would be very interesting.
dnate··on Pfizer blocks its drugs from being used in lethal injections in prisons (2016)
That is not how drugs and addiction work. Most people with a functioning social environment could take heroin, and would be fine. It is not much different from drugs administered in hospitals, and you don't see patients turning into drug addicts in masses.

Except maybe in some countries where doctors dish out opioids like they are candy.

dnate··on Planning a Morrowind all-faction speedrun with simulated annealing, part 2
There also is skywind, the port of the morrowind world to the skyrim engine.

dnate··on Caffeine and Cannabis Effects on Vital Neurotransmitters in Rats
yes, that's about half the LD50 for humans. Definitely more than you would consume as a non-addict on a regular day.
dnate··on Facebook’s tracking of non-users ruled illegal again in Europe
I have seen about 10% of my graduating cs class getting headhunted by Palantir Technologies.

From that sample size I'd estimate the percentage of engineers who don't care about ethics to be at least around 10%.

dnate··on Ask HN: Is it 'normal' to struggle so hard with work?
Sure, if you can pay a CEO salary.

That is literally the job of a CEO. He executes.

People argue that money is never as good a motivator as true passion is. I am not taking sides on that matter, it is just something to consider.

dnate··on Americans are spending less on clothing
congratulations on supporting child labor
dnate··on Google and Facebook are watching our every move online
yes, DDG has been nothing bu bliss lately. I did 99% of my master thesis research on there. And the other 1% I went to google for usually didn't turn up anything useful either.
dnate··on Send the Barbarian in First
Lets ignore that "cool" is not really well defined for a moment.

> Anything creative will never be seen as cool outside of the niche it lives in.

In my experience the exact opposite is true. The cool kids back in my school were the ones who were into music and art. It was mainly the lifestyle surrounding the "creative, don't care" type.

Even now that is still the case in my culture. People whose main profession is writing/painting/producing music are "cool". But maybe that is different in your culture.

dnate··on Why Is Bitcoin Valuable?
I don't really understand all the negativity towards bitcoin on HN these days.

Back when it was new nobody would shame or outright insult people who invested in it. But somehow that's totally the norm now. Why does it matter whether the coin is worth 10$ or 10000$?

It was and still is a disruptive concept that solves many issues with our current centralized currency system.

Sure it also has a lot of issues itself. But can't we simply appreciate the technology for what it is: a Proof Of Concept.

dnate··on The day I accidentally killed a little boy
Such a great movie. You might want to put a spoiler warning on that though.
dnate··on The Great Attention Heist
There is. Watching memes all day is way less productive than reading about some obscure processor bug, or doing a tutorial in the newest functional js dialect.
dnate··on Exercise Alters Our Microbiome
I am quite surprised to see a recommendation to shop at Walmart on HN. I thought it was common knowledge that Walmart is a pretty terrible company and that people shouldn't support that?

Sure, you save money, but at what cost?

dnate··on Casting a $20M Mirror for the World’s Largest Telescope [video]
It would be good to know what off-axis or on-axis means in the context of telescope mirrors.
dnate··on Apple acquires Buddybuild
I wish everyone downvoting you would at least state their problem with your post
dnate··on Hackers Steal $70M in Bitcoin
It is truly astonishing how salty the hacker news community is about BTX
dnate··on Reddit CEO Cracks Down on Abusive Content to Protect Users, Attract Advertisers
I don't see the connection between the shooting and advertisers. If you are American I understand that the Las Vegas shooting probably affected you very much. There is a lot of violence going on around the world, so what do you suggest?
dnate··on Bootstrapping My Side Project to $6k/Month
The reason he doesn't link to any apps is, that appygen is mostly used to make spam apps.
dnate··on Fearless Concurrency in Firefox Quantum
Can someone confirm this? Like do a simple energy consumption comparison pre- and post-quantum?
dnate··on Show HN: How to ensure JavaScript code quality
So this is only available for github projects? Any plans on including others?
dnate··on Facebook denies 'listening' to conversations
That's been done, and no one has found any evidence that this is happening. Hence it's status as a conspiracy theory.

As soon as you start assuming that the OS is giving the facebook app access to the microphone regardless of whether you allowed it in the settings, things start to get absurd

dnate··on Physicists attempt to prove the Riemann hypothesis
I found the HN title misleading. The articles title says they attack the question. Which to me has a different meaning than attacking a hypothesis, which would imply trying to disprove it.
dnate··on Online ambient atmosphere generator for roleplay games
I was looking for some ambient fireplace music
dnate··on French court fines Uber, execs for illegal taxi service
completely agree. I don't know why you are being downvoted
dnate··on CEO
+1
dnate··on What does it feel like to be fired from Facebook?
I would be interested in what constitutes as "jaywalking" in a software company. Something everyone does but can be grounds to termination? Can anyone tell me about specific cases?
