I’m guessing Transfer of Information.
dmux··on A lost X-Files song
Coincidentally there’s another song in an x-files episode that has been sought out over the years. In that case though, it’s a rendition by the original performers that seems to have never been made public: https://www.reddit.com/r/XFiles/comments/1zthzq/can_we_pleas...

dmux··on A simple web server written in Awk
If you enjoy stretching what you can get done with limited environments, I recently discovered BusyBox includes not only an AWK implementation but an HTTP server[0] that supports CGI as well. I spent a weekend setting up a really simple web-app using recutils [1] as the database and BusyBox AWK as the programming language.

If you enjoy bricolage and you feel like wasting a weekend, I would recommend giving it a try!

If Scheme is something you enjoy, BiwaScheme's interpreter can be instantiated from within Javascript and can be used to evaluate Scheme code.

dmux··on Remove TypeScript
It would be interesting to track the bug rate after this commit and compare it to the bug rate in the Typescript version of the code base.
dmux··on Remove TypeScript
>there's zero technical difference between TypeScript types and a combination of default args and type checker functions

I may be missing something, but aren't your type checker functions called at runtime whereas Typescript would be doing static type checking at compile time?

dmux··on Teaching with AI
I've noticed the same thing, specifically when asking about programming topics. It reminds me of the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect, but at least you're aware of the inaccuracies.

dmux··on The Mediterranean diet works
I thought that the most recent consensus on cholesterol was that dietary cholesterol plays a minuscule role compared to what our own livers produce and that the additional nutritional value of eggs outweigh the cholesterol concerns.
dmux··on BASH Stack – Bash Awk Sed HTMX web framework
I was actually just playing around with AWK as a backend for CGI. Busybox provides both an AWK implementation as well as an httpd server that supports cgi hosting (https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/services/webserver/http....).

AWK is definitely limited as a language, but IMO it’s a saner choice than going with BASH.

It’s also been interesting to integrate with SQLite by interfacing with it through AWK’s “pipe to variable” mechanism.

dmux··on The new science of meditation
I’m in the same boat. I can’t do the sitting still type of meditation. I’ve found that strenuous exercise works best for me. Jogging for an hour and a half for example - long enough and at slow enough pace (so I’m not huffing and puffing) that the only thought in my mind is how sore my legs are.
dmux··on QuickSort Algorithm (2018) [video]
Me too. At least they show how entries are being selected for comparison. One thing that always frustrates me when watching videos like the one linked in the main post is when teachers try to use a real world example where agency is involved (like students ordering themselves by height). In the video he says "The shortest person in the class, he _knows_ his place. He will quietly come and stand in the beginning of the list." Data _doesn't_ know. It needs some external process to determine its place.
dmux··on Google engineer earns $150K works 1 hr/day, spends rest of time on his startup
It's kind of crazy that Google of all places doesn't have any sort of system to alert when one of their devices signs on from a location not associated with that employee.

dmux··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
>Since 'verification' is now just a paid service, it's also much harder to separate bad actors from good actors.

Doesn't the fact that a payment method has been setup _help_ and not _hinder_ the process of separating bad actors from good? I'm not a huge Twitter user by any means but I would think that verification step would cut down on automated spam.

dmux··on SQL:2023 has been released
SQLite does support auto-incrementing: https://www.sqlite.org/autoinc.html. Is your gripe with the lack of "GENERATED BY DEFAULT AS IDENTITY" syntax specifically?
dmux··on That people produce HTML with string templates is telling us something
I really like using j2html as well. The number of times I've accidentally passed in a Map with a wrongly typed key-name has happened too often. With a statically typed template, that's caught at development time, not run-time.
dmux··on Building a weather station
I didn't even get that far! I was curious about the font being used (turns out it's Lato) so I right clicked to examine an element and boy did that fart scare me something awful!
dmux··on LMDB: The first version of Redis, written in Tcl (2009)
Flightaware.com used Tcl as one of its foundational technologies. Karl Lehenbauer gave a presentation in which he covered some of those systems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YwFHPFL20c
dmux··on Tcl Programming/Tk Examples
I know there was a (somewhat?) successful package repository and manager called Teapot and Teacup [0] respectively that was run by ActiveState but I don't believe it's actively having packages added to it. I really wish there was some new development along these lines to allow for github repos to be imported (I think I've seen this in Golang). As far as the language server goes, I'm guessing that would be really difficult to implement for Tcl since each command can essentially implement its own DSL.

dmux··on Ask HN: Would you consider starting to learn a programming language now?
>I've also been using it while writing Common Lisp, and I'm not sure if it's just because it's a more obscure language, but it commonly produces nonsensical code, recommends functions that don't exist or work differently than it thinks they do, or produces non-idiomatic weird stuff.

I've been using it for Common Lisp as well and have had the same experience. For example, when asking it to help me generate some simple CRUD operations using the cl-sqlite library, it just comes up with function names that simply do not exist in that library [0]: `sqlite3:execute-command` `sqlite3:with-query-results` `sqlite3:get-result`
