dmourati··on Ask HN: How to tell someone they are not doing well at work?
What about reframing this as how to help someone do better at work? Once you change the perspective, your motives are pure and the person you'd like to help is likely to feel less threatened.

Over time, they will probably wonder: "hey, why is this person investing so much time into helping me?" That may be enough for them to get the picture.

May I recommend anyone wishing to understand more about valuation read the book Venture Deals?

The subtitle is tongue in cheek but also gives you a sense of how much you can learn and how rare company you are in once you understand the details.

dmourati··on 802.eleventy what? Why Wi-Fi kind of sucks
It is working great!

The snakeoil comment was about the MIMO functionality which I can only really test via my iPhone7 at the moment with the 2x2 MIMO client to the 4x4 MIMO AP (UAP-AC-HD). Once I get the MacBook Pro I'll have a 3x3 MIMO client.

I bought primarily because if this animation explaining the benefits of MIMO. https://unifi-hd.ubnt.com/

The marketing worked on me!

I bought the snake oil in the form of a high end Ubiquiti WAP. Waiting for myco to issue me a new MBP touch bar so I can test it out.

Microsoft and Facebook are the obvious easy ones for me. The next three are far more interesting as I use each on a daily basis.

My favorite part of the show is the Baltimore dialect. If you are casually watching an episode or two for the first time, there is no way you can grok all the nuances of the local diction. Over time, you start to re-hear words, phrases, pronunciations, and slang and you feel like you are in on it. Then you realize, the diction is different across the regional characters. Sometimes, even the characters can't understand one another.

This joy of language combines with the fact that surveillance and eavesdropping play such central and indeed titular roles in the show. You then mix in the racial element for example having the black office secretary translating street hood lingo to the white cops listening in. It just all fits together beautifully.

dmourati··on Startup School 13: How to Find Product Market Fit – Peter Reinhardt [video]
I found segment.io in the early days of a new job and quickly set it up. I started playing with it and siphoning off some live data using a pretty rough shell script calling curl. Peter and another colleague saw what I was doing and came to my company to meet in person. I recall booking the largest, most impressive conference room we had and a 10AM meeting.

Peter and his colleague showed up and walked me through using Segment. The told me that I was the only one using their API via curl and that they were impressed with what I had been able to cobble together so quickly.

Peter took out a tiny Moleskine-type notebook and drew a diagram of what was next on the roadmap for Segment. I recall how neat and detailed the diagram was and how thoughtful Peter was about what he was doing next.

Peter and his colleague also revealed to me a sort of sister company they were familiar with that was creating an API around professional identity as a service. This sounded a lot like https://www.fullcontact.com/ but was something else.

I've since moved on from focusing on that type of data. HN seems to feature a fair amount of content about Segment. I enjoy keeping up with their progress and wish them all well.

My constitutional law professor Ron Rotunda got himself entwined in those torture memos, at least as far as being mentioned in connection with their authoring. What exactly his role is remains unclear but that shook me pretty deeply:

dmourati··on Ask HN: Leave job right before app goes to production?
I would feel sad to lose the teammate (assuming they were good) but happy for them that they found something else that better met their needs.

Look, we all have individual goals. Sometimes these align and we form a strong team. Sometimes they diverge and people move on. I believe you are overanalyzing your role in all of this. Give your two week notice, act like a professional, and ignore the launch calendar.

dmourati··on How much does employee turnover really cost?
Not sure what you mean by rule but that has not been my experience. I'm unsure how up the ladder my raises have been but I've gotten 16%, 18% in the past year and half.

Maybe CEO approval just means the company is belt-tightening.

dmourati··on Ask HN: Switching from developer to project manager. What to keep in mind?
Prepare to be largely ignored and avoided. I know the PMs I work with mean well but I find it hard to take them seriously or give them much credit when their work product is mostly spreadsheets, gant charts, and scheduling meetings.

Product managers, on the other hand, deal with what gets in front of the customer, why, and when. I have more inclination to work with them.
