dmkolobov··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
For sure! Still more money than I can fathom bringing in if software engineering went away tomorrow.

1300 sq ft house with a big yard for the toddler.

dmkolobov··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Your solution to childcare is permanent unemployment?

This is Denver rent actually, and increasingly most urban centers.

dmkolobov··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Did you graduate yesterday? Have you actually lived in the world?

My unmet needs are $2.5k rent and $2k childcare, per month. Then there's food, healthcare, car payments. There is pretty much zero wiggle room for us.

dmkolobov··on Ember-1
Fair enough!

This is cool! But also: am I wrong for thinking “Pareto frontier” is some pretty silly/clever marketing jargon? Is this common phrasing for basically saying: test performance per spend on tokens is decent?

what were the full-stack rockstar AI engineers doing?
dmkolobov··on Cartesian – AI 3D Modeling for Design
The video game applications are truly pretty cool ... though I don't know who would admit to using such a tool in the current environment.

Some of the other things like the `Residential`, `Structure and Complex Shape`, and `Large Scale` seem like they'd need review by engineers to be useful in real world scenarios? Do architects just sketch whatever looks good as a first pass?

dmkolobov··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
Citation of what? this was unpublished work! This computational blitz really just reads as "might makes right" on OpenAi's part... which isn't surprising, but they should probably be honest about what they've done here.
dmkolobov··on Carmack: Has early Scratch experience led to fulfilling careers?
I don't know about the parent's project, but bit.trip runner immediately comes to mind for me!
dmkolobov··on Storm Summoner, a MIDI controller for effects pedals
> No stomping required. Storm Summoner is a touch-based MIDI controller purpose-built for effects pedals.
dmkolobov··on I co-founded Burning Man. The festival has lost its soul
I work at a financial company and around 2019, the break room had a magazine called “Meetings” with a front-page article about how burning man and sxsw are the next big thing in corporate culture.
dmkolobov··on Bomb fishing is wreaking havoc on Indonesia's coral reefs
My first encounter with the concept of bomb fishing was the Shapoklyak episode of the soviet cartoon Cheburashka, produced in the 70s. It's been around.
dmkolobov··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
I think people are missing the point: the loudness and ostentatiousness is seen as a celebration of Asian American identity by the author. In Denver there is a similar culture surrounding low-riders and the Latino community on Federal St. Both are a celebration of minority cultures in America.

Judging these car sub-cultures divorced from their communal aspects, or as an expression of mainstream American masculinity is pretty off-base IMO.

dmkolobov··on Parallel Parentheses Matching
Nice. I remember being exposed to this idea as Dyck languages , via Ed Kmett’s recorded Monoidal Parsing talk.

when I saw this headline my first thought was: wow DDG must not have a lot of users.

dmkolobov··on Airbnb allowed rampant price gouging following L.A. fires, city attorney alleges
This reminds me of the time my middle-school history teacher decided to bring in one of the student’s financial advisor parents to defend price-gouging on gas during Hurricane Katrina evacuation and subsequent exodus.

It was an unconvincing argument then, and is an unconvincing argument now.

dmkolobov··on Caching is an abstraction, not an optimization
Wow cool, you just summed up something I’ve found myself doing subconsciously in the past few years. Thanks!

I use to be quite fond of short identifiers, especially ones the make the signs “line up”… until I worked with code long enough that I forgot what I did and had to read it again.

dmkolobov··on Wind Knitting Factory
Beautiful work.

As an off-topic observation, whenever I see something like the phrase “operates between the public and the private space” I immediately think: this person definitely went to art school :P

dmkolobov··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
Yeah no. This happens in my city and to my friends. You're making a lot of assumptions about people's experiences here.

Consider yourself lucky that you've never called the cops as a victim and then been further victimized by the police.
dmkolobov··on Weird Expressions in Rust
On the more mainstream side of things, Typescript also has a bottom type called `never` which is used to type unreachable/exceptional code.

If I had to guess:

1. lack of native GC, you had to roll your own by providing a runtime.

2. lack of tail-call elimination in V1 of the spec. This essentially forces you to trampoline everything.

dmkolobov··on Type Inference Zoo
It is crazy how much work comes out of Bruno Oliveira’s research groups.

Another cool online thing that exists is CP, a language with disjoint intersection and union types:

dmkolobov··on Now might be the best time to learn software development
Do you have any advice for understanding the difference between "relational" and "tablational"? I remember hearing something about how SQL is not really relational from my college professor, but we never really explored that statement.
dmkolobov··on OxCaml - a set of extensions to the OCaml programming language.
Probably? Locality becomes fairly important at scale. That’s why there’s a strong preference for array-based data structures in high-performance code.

If I was them I’d be using OCaml to build up functional “kernels” which could be run in a way that requires zero allocation. Then you dispatch requests to these kernels and let the fast modern generational GC clean up the minor cost of dispatching: most of the work happens in the zero-allocation kernels.

Is that really a viable solution for a timeframe of 6+ hours?
dmkolobov··on How Ukraine’s killer drones are beating Russian jamming
Fair. Sorry about that.
dmkolobov··on Apple Notes Expected to Gain Markdown Support in iOS 26
Quite honestly, I’m surprised it’s taken this long. It’s been 21 years since one of their biggest evangelists wrote the format!
dmkolobov··on How Ukraine’s killer drones are beating Russian jamming
I think the problem is an assumption that people are too stupid to grasp their brilliant idea.

That being said, having all drones equipped with cameras could enable a more robust version of what they’re talking about:

If uplink with human operators is lost, but short-range comms between drones exist, they could use their video feeds to autonomously coordinate amongst themselves.
