dmitrig01··on How We Use AWS, Ansible, and Packer to Make Deployment Awesome
In general, I like Ansible's concepts of idempotency, etc., and find them to be well suited for server configuration in general, but it does come at a price, both in terms of development time and speed (I actually find Ansible to be a lot slower than Fabric).

I've started thinking of server configurations in Ansible terms (i.e. "I want X module installed, Y directory present, etc"), but sometimes nothing beats a simple bash command to git pull && sudo service restart.

dmitrig01··on Show HN: Branch – Mobile links that pass data through install and open
Dmitri from Branch here. When a user has already had a fingerprint matched once, we can do future matches with much higher certainty, so as more and more users click links and are matched, the chance decreases.

Additionally, as Alex said, though most uses of the links don't require a 100% match rate ("any growth is good"), we do have an option for links which require a 100% match.

dmitrig01··on Just Keep Building
Yikes, should not have asked friends who didn't have accounts to vote for us. Thanks for the insight :-)
dmitrig01··on Show HN: I built an extension of JavaScript in a day
Ah, very interesting use of the ! operator.
dmitrig01··on Show HN: I built an extension of JavaScript in a day
Sorry, should have clarified on 2. As an expansion of one of the examples given:

    loadAndPrintFile: (contents) {
       if (!contents) {
         fs.readFile() -> (error!, contents)
       }
       console.log(contents);
    }
i.e., expected behavior would be as if readFile was not an async function.

I'm asking because I built something similar (though it only worked with promises, not general async functions), and I'm curious to compare approaches :-) - mine is a sweet.js macro: http://pastie.org/9410315 (uses https://github.com/petkaantonov/bluebird and https://github.com/BranchMetrics/promise-accum). The basic syntax would be:

    task {
      item1 <- LoadItem(1);
      item2 <- LoadItem(item1.foreign_key);
      ret <- DoSomethingWithItems(item1, item2);
    }
dmitrig01··on Show HN: I built an extension of JavaScript in a day
1. Instead of implementing it in vanilla JavaScript, consider creating a Sweet.js macros (or series of macros), so it can be used with other flavors of JS as well (e.g. JSX, etc)

2. On the async functions – what happens if you put an async function inside a conditional? This is effectively solved by ES6's yield + co or an equivalent.

3. A nitpick, but, is there a way to create static functions on classes? E.g. Car.x instead of Car.prototype.x?

dmitrig01··on Neural networks in JavaScript
From the documentation:

    Each training pattern should have an input and an output, both of which can be either an array of numbers from 0 to 1 or a hash of numbers from 0 to 1.

dmitrig01··on Write Better JavaScript with Promises
There are several promise libraries (the most promising among them seems to be Bluebird, though Q has some popularity as well), which can easily convert callback-style functions into promises. For example:

    var b = require('bluebird'), request = b.promisify(require('request'));
    request(...).then(...)
These libraries also have utilities for controlling callback flow -- e.g calling several promises in parallel, which is done in the article with jQuery's $.when, waiting until a certain number finish, etc
dmitrig01··on Show HN: Music for Geeks and Nerds
Kudos for Steve Reich on the very front!
dmitrig01··on Ask HN: Books on overcoming shyness
I am in very much the same situation. Something thing I've found that really helps me is just reading about shy behavior. I find that identifying an issue is the first step to solving, and reading descriptions of shy behavior often help me better and more precisely identify what to fix. One book I found to be quite helpful in this regard was "The Introvert Advantage" by Marti Laney.
dmitrig01··on Show HN: Search for the radio stations broadcasting at your mail address
Actually this app could be useful this -- input an address and a radius, and it could tell you what stations are available.
dmitrig01··on Ask HN: Music Hack Day NYC Ideas
Is there, or will there be, anything like this going on around the SF area at some point? I'd love to take part in something like this, but 3000 miles is a little steep.
dmitrig01··on Think Drupal was FLOSS and non-profit? Think again.
There's a difference. If you see the URL drupalindepth.com or commonusesofdrupal.com, you obviously should think "hey, this is about the Drupal software blah blah blah", while if you see davedoesdrupal.com, you should think "This is about what dave does with drupal", not "what drupal does in general". The first is allowed, the second isn't unless you have a license.

[Edit: IANAL]
