dmishe··on “I was just asked to balance a Binary Search Tree by JFK's airport immigration”
Try flying to Europe from an eastern bloc country, see if you feel civil then.

dmishe··on MagicStack: Python syntax highlighter for Sublime Text and Atom
What are the advantages over built-in syntax highlight in sublime text?
dmishe··on Apple’s Insurmountable Platform Advantage
>radio interface (RF) chips that traditionally were off limits to all but the most advanced chip makers like Qualcomm. These chips rival CPUs in complexity.

This is interesting, I want to know more about why are they so complex?

dmishe··on iOS at Facebook [pdf]
For what, fat binaries? That's pretty much what Mach-O format had from inception under NeXTSTEP, and survived until now. As it was said in the sibling comment, iOS 9 is introducing a way to cut exactly the slice you need for a particular device.
dmishe··on iOS at Facebook [pdf]
iOS apps are shipped as fat binaries, so for one, part of that 100mb app is duplicated slices of binaries for armv7, arm64 and possibly, but not likely, armv7s.

Android apps enjoy bytecode that is getting JIT-ed on install.

dmishe··on Why I’m not enabling Bitcode
That's not new though, Apple is the one signing the apps on the store from its launch.
dmishe··on Why Cant Commercial Airplanes Go Faster? (2012)
Well then, how about charging more for faster flights, to account for fuel? I mean, domestic business class isn't that great, but people who pay others people money for it would presumably go for a faster flight.
dmishe··on The useless text book algorithms

dmishe··on Intel Skylake sample breaks 6.5GHz mark on LN2
It's based on Pentium 4 core which was extremely overclock-able, plus it's a single core, which makes it easier to get to that stable enough for a screenshot state.
dmishe··on We don’t trust drinking fountains anymore, and that’s bad for our health
If you don't actually touch the faucet and let the water run for a few seconds before drinking it, what's the danger? Anything that the dog would've put on it would be washed away, no?
dmishe··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
So here's the thing. They will release Apple Music for Android... and there's full stdlib of Swift support for Linux? Could it be that the Android app is partly Swift?

dmishe··on Ask HN: What makes a programmer a rockstar?

dmishe··on Google's new bus is for the people
Well yes, but Mountain View isn't exactly good at anything like that.
dmishe··on Apple’s Dev Agreement Means No EFF Mobile App for iOS
I don't understand the purpose of the app, the one on play store looks like a one button subscription frontend. How is it better then their website, email, twitter?
dmishe··on The 2014 Panic Report
Well, they price Coda Lite 1/5th the price of OSX version. So they get roughly 1/5h of the revenue. Math works out. They could try and price Coda iOS at $99, but Cabel is right — it's just not that important platform for dev tools, and I don't see people paying that much. Now if those two were incredibly (and equally) valuable products on both platforms AND priced the same AND there was much less revenue from iOS, then sure, we can show AppStore's fault.

Not saying that appstore isn't broken, I think it is, but for this particular example, I don't think store is the problem.

dmishe··on Would you use a Linux based computer, better or equal to a mac in quality?
No, I have to use linux desktop at work form time to time and constantly amazed how fucking terrible it is. I think I would rather use OSX on Asus hardware.
dmishe··on Incremental Plans to Improve Python Packaging
>You know what else needs improvement?

The whole Python 3 situation? :)

dmishe··on Uber Confirms It Is Assisting Police in India Following an Alleged Rape
This probably would not help in this case, but, the app should have an emergency button that'll call the police and provide vehicle info and driver details with a real-time coordinates to them. It really is a no-brainer from tech point view, they have all the data.

Or if you want to go even deeper, make drivers install tamper-proof hardware with a big red button. But there a lot of small details and likely regulations in this approach

dmishe··on Once Celebrated in Russia, Programmer Pavel Durov Chooses Exile
VK was a total clone of FB UI of that time. And it still is in many ways, but the irony is that UI is so much better than what FB did afterwards, just night and day.
dmishe··on Under Pressure from Uber, Taxi Medallion Prices Are Plummeting
I'm not familiar with medallion system, do you have to buy them per-car or per-cab-company?

In any case, 1 million is just, wow.

dmishe··on Mobile showers for San Francisco's homeless
Didn't bart used to have restrooms on every station until 9/11 ?

Anyways, Palo Alto has a bunch of public ones and all of them are damn gross. Worse than civic center plaza. I wonder how hard (expensive) is it to keep them clean.
