dmicah··on Apple announces new accessibility features, including eye tracking
Typically eye-trackers work by illuminating the eyes with near infrared light and using infrared cameras. This creates a higher contrast image of the pupils, etc. I assume Apple is doing this in the Vision Pro. Eye-tracking can also be done with just visible light, though. Apple has the benefit of knowing where all the user interface elements are on screen, so eye-tracking in this on the iPhone or iPad doesn't need to be high precision. Knowledge of the position of the items can help to reduce the uncertainty of what is being fixated on.
dmicah··on Neuralink patient controls games by thinking during interview
There are 'dry' EEG electrodes which don't require conductive gel, and algorithms to remove the electrical effect of eye-blinks (ICA, etc.)
dmicah··on EP–133
Their pocket operator series were inexpensive, at $60-100 per model, but were very basic with essentially a bare PCB and most of the electronics protected by being placed under the screen. I believe that much of the cost of their expensive products is due to a lot of custom parts like CNC machined aluminum enclosures. This product seems designed to hit a price point between the pocket operators (~$100) and their plastic OP-Z (~$500).
dmicah··on DAWproject: Open exchange format for DAWs
There have always been plug-ins, especially by small developers on the Mac, which are AU only.

Apple Silicon macs can now run iOS / iPadOS AUs as well, so there are a ton of plugins from that world that are not available as VSTs.

Apple Logic can't load VSTs, so typically on the Mac it makes sense to just have AUs. Ableton Live on the Mac can load VSTs or AU, but there isn't really a reason to keep the VSTs around.

dmicah··on DAWproject: Open exchange format for DAWs
It would be nice if Bitwig would support existing plug-ins formats like AU.
dmicah··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Maybe try a USB condom: https://www.zdnet.com/article/flying-this-weekend-this-6-usb...
dmicah··on Apple’s Vision Pro AR headset is finally here
If having a tethered battery reduces the weight of the headset, then I imagine it may be preferable that way. The weight of the Quest can make it uncomfortable to wear for long periods.
dmicah··on Why is my dryer radioactive?
It can be an issue everywhere, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking.
dmicah··on Genes down-regulated in spaceflight are involved in longevity in C. elegans
I don't know anything about this research, but I imagine they could also expose samples on Earth to similar radiation?
dmicah··on DaVinci Resolve for iPad
Sounds like it from their description ("USB-C media disks"):

Supported file formats include H.264, H.265, Apple ProRes and Blackmagic RAW, with clips able to be imported from the iPad Pro internal storage and Photos library, or externally connected iCloud and USB-C media disks.

dmicah··on AWS doesn't make sense for scientific computing
Research involving human subjects (psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, etc.) requires institutional review board approval and informed consent, etc. but mostly doesn't involve HIPAA either.
dmicah··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
But are any of Google's side projects an existential threat to their main business of search / ads in the way that digital cameras were to film for Kodak?
dmicah··on Most US professors are trained at same few elite universities
And two went to the same high school.
dmicah··on The YC Summer 2022 Batch
Not sure if this is what happened here but demographic / ethnicity questions often have a 'prefer not to say' option.
dmicah··on Using a Raspberry Pi as a Bluetooth Speaker with PipeWire
They are in short supply, however you can still pay normal retail price. Check https://rpilocator.com/ .
dmicah··on Amazon to Acquire One Medical
Maybe it was just local competition, but in college a gallon of milk at Whole Foods was about $.25 cheaper than the Safeway across the street.
dmicah··on Supply chain issues are killing synth companies
While not DSP chips, analog synths will typically also include microcontrollers, for scanning a keyboard or front panel controls, receiving MIDI messages, and generating control voltages.
dmicah··on Why the Black MacBook Cost More
This actually isn't true, one example off the top of my head is that currently the black Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad all cost $20 more than their white counterparts: https://www.apple.com/shop/mac/accessories/mice-keyboards
dmicah··on Waymo begins driverless rides in San Francisco
I believe they are referring delivering the gas to the station via tanker truck, not filling a passenger vehicle with gas.
dmicah··on Launch HN: MutableAI (YC W22) – Automatically clean Jupyter notebooks using AI
I think the real trick is to never use Jupyter / notebooks to begin with.
dmicah··on State of Machine Learning in Julia
I'm sure it depends on your vantage point, but I would argue that ML is more likely to be considered a subset of Statistics than the other way around.
dmicah··on Rack 2 (Virtual Eurorack)
I know that each cable in VCV Rack imposes a 1-sample delay. However isn't the audio still transmitted to the audio interface in blocks? It's not clear why a DAW would need an intermediary in this case, other than something analogous to the VCV Rack 2 Pro VST instrument host. The reason not use Rack is so that it could be an open standard with multiple host implementations.
dmicah··on Rack 2 (Virtual Eurorack)
There should just be a standard for a software module, like VST for plug-in instruments. Then they could re-used across platforms, and a DAW like Ableton could theoretically host them directly without needing an intermediary VST host app like Rack.
dmicah··on Rack 2 (Virtual Eurorack)
No, but there were already other software synthesis options available for people who don't want a skeuomorphic interface, as various levels of complexity - Max/MSP, PureData, Reaktor, CSound, SuperCollider, Audulus, KarmaFX, etc.
dmicah··on The Dreamcast Legacy
I think they probably meant to write GameCube there.
dmicah··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
The touchbar Macbook Pros were released 2016 rather than 2013.
dmicah··on Casio SK-1
SK-1 has 4 note polyphony
dmicah··on Association of sleep duration in middle and old age with incidence of dementia
The study you cite isn't really in conflict with the parent study. They note that the number of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease in the study was too small to develop a non-linear model relating sleep duration to AD risk:

Pg. 858:

"Similarly, short and long sleep duration and poor sleep quality have also been linked with an increased risk of dementia. Although a similar J-shaped association was observed in our observational analysis, we were limited to performing only the linear MR analysis, as the non-linear MR method requires a large number of cases and individual-level data. In our linear MR analysis, we found no clear evidence that an increased sleep duration was associated with a higher risk of all-cause dementia in UK Biobank or with AD in IGAP. This is unsurprising, as the true association might be non-linear and we were limited with only 1343 dementia cases in UK Biobank. Also, IGAP does not capture non-AD dementia types and comprises an older and more heterogeneous population."

"Results for risks of dementia and AD are still too imprecise to draw any definitive conclusions. Our findings suggest that, in clinical care, attention should be paid to sleep-duration patterns and improved sleep habits could represent a potential therapeutic target for cognition."

dmicah··on Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce
Dropbox had acquired the Mailbox email client in 2013, but then shut it down in 2015. This was a very annoying turn of events for people who used the app prior to the acquisition.
dmicah··on Ableton Live 11
I hear you, Ableton actually has pretty great tutorials in the program itself that can help to learn the software as well.
