dmhmr··on Show HN: I spent 2 years designing a mechanical Magic Keyboard
Love what you did, the dedication for 2 years to launch this is awesome. Apple keyboards are near-horrific IMO so you are filling an important niche for sure. I know it is a silly complaint in the mech KB space but the price compared to something like a Keychron K3 makes this a no-go for my preferences. The K3 is very close to what I'd consider suitable as a daily driver at work. Thank you for including audio of the typing!!!! Again this is my preference, the Alter II is not "thocky" enough for what I like to hear. Clacky and Clicky keyboards are just far too distracting or painful to listen to for extended periods. Also interesting to see a speaker built-in. I'd have cut it for cost and space.
dmhmr··on Show HN: I spent 2 years designing a mechanical Magic Keyboard
It looks nice on mobile but I initially viewed it on desktop and found it unpleasant to use.
dmhmr··on Notes on Buttondown.com
Not to guess why it was not included, but speaking as someone from the infosec realm, it has a reputation for spam and phishing.
dmhmr··on Why a White House Plan to Fund Office-to-Housing Conversions Isn't Working
I shouldn't have used such broad strokes, you accurately assessed that my opinion is based on my experience with IT/cyber folks in the government.
dmhmr··on Why a White House Plan to Fund Office-to-Housing Conversions Isn't Working
I disagree based on my decade+ experience working with Federal employees. I would guess that 50% of GS-13 to GS-15 (heck even SES) are mostly incompetent, 40% get the basic minimum of their job complete, and the final 10% shoulder most of the work accomplished. I have come across many GS staff given busy work roles so they are "out of the way" of leadership's objectives. :edit: For folks downvoting me, this is just my personal opinion based on my experience working within IT and cybersecurity. My observations can easily be (and may actually be) untrue elsewhere (as noted by replies to my comment). Early in my career, I was a GS-13 myself.
dmhmr··on Ask HN: What $500-2500 product improved your 2022
You have to expand on your last point please!
dmhmr··on Ask HN: Remote-Friendly for International Timezones?
Just want to note that suggestion #2 is easily detected by any org with even a whiff of security tooling in place. Quick way to get terminated.
dmhmr··on Ask HN: Is there anything wrong with splurging on tech?
Have a budget, stick to it, be happy.
dmhmr··on The Art of Mac Malware: Volume I: Analysis
I have seen it in use on Intel and M1 Macs in a developer-heavy userbase. It's fine.
dmhmr··on The Art of Mac Malware: Volume I: Analysis
From a corporate perspective, either SentinelOne or CrowdStrike Falcon.
dmhmr··on Google to Acquire Mandiant
Having used Chronicle, it felt like an underwhelming paper thin demo product compared to what the industry offers. May as well scrap it and lean on Mandiant's experience for a replacement.
dmhmr··on Google to Acquire Mandiant
FireEye was nowhere on the same level as Mandiant and the two companies split and FE was purchased by STG for $1.2 billion.
dmhmr··on How to Remove the Frustration of Reading in Games
I started playing yesterday and have not yet completed the tutorial stuff yet, I quit in the middle of it in fact.
dmhmr··on Logging at Twitter
The blog post just cuts off at the end? "Ultimately, this migration has resulted in increased adoption of centralized logging, including among core application teams and operations and"
dmhmr··on Ask HN: If you're in a 100% remote role, should you turn your camera on?
My team, and myself, turn it on for conversations where everyone is participating. So a small team huddle (3-5 people) has cameras on. Bunch of slides and a bigger audience? Cameras off. In reality, it is dictated by your team or organization culture.
dmhmr··on Yes Hello
The timestamps, I imagine, are to highlight that waiting for a response before asking is wasting time. The same exchange can be just two lines: The query and response.

you: Hi coworker, I'm working on [something] and I'm trying to do [etc]

coworker: Hi you, Oh, that's [answer]

dmhmr··on Ask HN: Is the quality of Google Maps going downhill?
I switched to the iPhone 13 when it launched and have been giving Apple Maps a chance. I have experienced more frustration with Apple Maps vs Google Maps. It seems to always think I am slightly farther back on the road than I really am, which is a huge negative for any map app.
dmhmr··on Ask HN: Are Cybersecurity Workers Ok?
The past few years have made me feel sour on how many organizations run cybersecurity in general. The industry is full of individuals who do not understand the tech they are protecting, and often they barely understand the security tech they use daily. A lot of places are simply doing compliance check-marking and barely have a shred of technical aptitude. They struggle with basic fundamentals like inventory and patch management. It is an industry that is hard to stay upbeat about if you are looking at anything larger than how it benefits your personal paycheck. If you want to get insight into the reality of how the government operates, just look at GAO reports, they are alarming: https://www.gao.gov/highrisk/ensuring-cybersecurity-nation
dmhmr··on Ask HN: What was your experience like moving from an IC to a manager role?
Hilariously, the reverse is how I ended up in that position. The client really liked my results with my single team and re-structured 3 other teams so that they would fall under me as well. Their former team leads then became "Senior" ICs who could step in if I took time off.
dmhmr··on Ask HN: What was your experience like moving from an IC to a manager role?
I went from IC for a few years to manager for a few years to back to IC. The switch back to IC was only this year for me. I really enjoy both roles and have missed being in either role while occupying the other. They are different sets of work and skills, but the biggest thing I can say is, if you enjoy seeing others succeed and leaving your team for bigger and better things, be the best assistant you can to your team so they can get to the next point in their career. Funny enough, this raises your retention rate when you are actively trying to equip everyone for their next job, and when they do eventually leave, you'll more often than not have a great connection from a grateful person that you can lean on in the future if you ever looking to change jobs or collaborate on a project. Just keep in mind that this can be emotionally exhausting, especially if you are an introvert (I am). Before I switched back to being an IC I was running 4 teams with 24 direct reports. It was an interesting scenario to be in, especially when one team was 24/7. You have to manage competing priorities between the teams, between the ICs, and the regular stakeholder stuff. Learn what metrics make it easy to celebrate your people and your team, and teach your team how to celebrate their victories loudly. Don't let your team set goals that doesn't get them closer to their career goals. Acknowledge from the start that everyone at any moment can leave your team/company and it isn't personal - so make the most of their time while they are there and let them leave as a stronger person. Shield your people from politics, shield them from BS work, shield them from bad apples, establish a kind culture, become best friends with your recruitment team, and enjoy what happens when you celebrate your people and team at every milestone they meet.
dmhmr··on How to properly load a dishwasher (2020)
I knew what this video was before I clicked. I love his content that gets into this type of focus. His Coleman Lantern videos were great too.
dmhmr··on An app called Libby and the big business of library e-books
Libby and Overdrive are the same thing with different skins. Neither app is good but Overdrive is simpler (IMO) for reserving books and downloading them, so I stuck with Overdrive.

I have been "learning" French for 5+ years... what resources are you using that you would recommend?
dmhmr··on Turn GitHub into an RSS Reader
I use it to direct certain topics to my Discord server.
dmhmr··on Do you hate the Google's Chrome shortened address bar?
Thank you so much!!! This was an infuriating change by the Chrome team.
dmhmr··on Web developer's guide to AVIF images
I can see the differences in Chrome too though? I came to the comments to see if anyone else could tell that the AVIF example is inferior to alternatives.
dmhmr··on The Screenplay Format Reference
As nomla indicates, the top dog is, by far, Final Draft. It is actually a pretty good product to boot.
