Find me even one human in the world who meets your criteria, then.
dmd··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
Aha. If you click 'Uh' exactly on its text, it works. If you click even one pixel away from the actual text, you get the chooser with not enough options.
dmd··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
No, there’s only the listed options (street has a sidewalk, or it doesn’t - no option for “sidewalk extends for half the street but not the other half”).

I don’t know if that counts as it does or it doesn’t.

Maybe I don’t understand how it’s supposed to work, but the very first question I was given had three choices and none of them were correct. What are you supposed to do then?
dmd··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
If it's so good - who is using it, and to what effect? Because it sure doesn't seem like it's doing much for the US.

There’s no “maybe” about it.

How does that even happen? HN software hiccup? Or what?
dmd··on English: A vs. An
Er, that sounds backwards to me. I thought you put the a on the word because it is feminine. You're saying the word is feminine because there's an a on it?
dmd··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
Wow I’m sure glad that’s settled then.
dmd··on Tell the speakers that you liked their talks
I heard a speaker once say "that's a [obvious pause] question" and the audience giggled because it was obviously a really poorly thought out question.

dmd··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
You are aware that this is the theory of a single crank, and not supported by any modern scientific thought, yes?
dmd··on The Death of Shame Is Tearing Us Apart
I think there’s a difference between knowing you’re doing something wrong and not caring, and not even knowing you’re doing anything wrong. What you’re describing is usually the latter.

Love this. I had something almost identical on my Commodore 64 40 years ago that you could use with the joystick or KoalaPad.
dmd··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
One saved my aunt's life. But I suppose I didn't really need an aunt, right?
dmd··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
You said a bunch of statements about yourself, and then made a statement about me.

You should have concluded "I don't need a smartwatch."

Not everyone has the same needs.

Because then less stuff fits on my screen? What a question
dmd··on Apple Watch Series 12
And even if it weren't super weird and creepy, it's 15 seconds, right? So what, that waitress rolledup, read the menu for less than 10 seconds, and then zoomed away, giving you a couple of seconds to get to and run the replay?

Me. I love my Pro, and this year I'm switching to Max. My eyes (at 48) aren't what they used to be.

dmd··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
> far too much emphasis on the places you are not going

I have this issue with literally every modern nav system. They all make their fundamental display a line marked on a map, and most of the information on that map is irrelevant.

More than 20 years ago I had some kind of Verizon flip-open phone with a QWERTY keyboard. No idea what model, but it had this fabulous nav interface that just showed big arrows showing your next two turns and a schematic diagram of what the next turn would look like. I wish I could get something like that, but with Google's data as the back end.

dmd··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
I love this. I think you should be clearer about that - it's obvious to people who have experience doing this kind of data analysis, but a lot of people I've shown this were confused, as in "huh, load-bearing and genuinely makes sense but how'd he pick all these other words!?"

I think it should be made clear that the sorting is sort of Texas Sharpshooter-ish - the ones on top are on top because they sort that way.

The fact that load-bearing ends up on top is the proof that this works because we all know a priori that load-bearing is a Claudism.

Just a nitpick - by 1926, about 20-30% of Bell exchanges were already automatic, on Strowger https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strowger_switch equipment.
