dmarlow··on Ask HN: Is Docker-Compose Dead?
This! I prefer to define various docker-compose files wrapped with a makefile. Then, spin up various parts of the project with simple commands like `make api-up`

It's so easy and simple, I don't know how I ever lived without it. So much is supported, I feel like it's so easy to get everyone on a team on the same page without having to install and configure so many different things.

Funny enough, despite all of these containers, I actually don't deploy any to actually run any of the code or dependecies. It's all just for the ease and speed of development.

dmarlow··on Java Verbal Expressions
I love your example of how it should be explained. This helps people correlate the verbal aspects to the regex parts they described. This ultimately reinforces and helps people learn regex more deeply.
dmarlow··on Show HN: Lunatic – Actor System for Rust/WebAssembly
I would love nothing more than for dotnet to adopt something like Erlang's actor system as well AOT compilation to native. I don't think I'd ever leave my house again.
dmarlow··on Eight Years at Roblox
> It's that willingness to spend 30 years working on a problem that builds a multi-billion dollar company.

Yup. This is the investor mindset. I'm guilty of selling out too early in various things, stocks, companies, etc. Sticking things out with your "investments" can have a significant return.

Knowing when to bow out early is also a valuable skill. Skill, experience and luck; sometimes in any order and quantity.

dmarlow··on Airbnb S-1
Take a look at PAL, pledged asset lines or margin loans.
dmarlow··on How and when to acquire SaaS users
Sorry to nitpick, but some of your examples illustrate that they certainly had an MVP and THEN did the distribution. How could hotmail perform distribution without first having an MVP?

I agree with the premise of validation, then building. While this is a good rule of thumb, it's not always possible. I like the focus and thinking behind getting users. It can't be "built it and they will come". Having a good, sound plan and sticking with it is the key.

dmarlow··on Tobias Lutke still writes code for Shopify
Generally true, but not always true. Shopify seem to be doing just fine with this model. If things change, maybe this model will also change.
dmarlow··on Tobias Lutke still writes code for Shopify
Thanks for sharing this. I've used this (I call it a cache buster) for static assets in a CDN, but never considered it for other things. I'd love to read the article if it can be dug up. It's not clear how that unique ID is managed and am curious to learn more.
dmarlow··on U.S. contributes 5 times more ocean plastic than previous estimates
This right here. Taxes can have a huge impact on behavior. However, corporation's ability to lobby can delay or stall any efforts to make meaningful changes quickly. I think we'll get there, but it'll take far longer than it needs to.
dmarlow··on Why are so many unprofitable companies the best performing stocks this year?
> Their investor, the Mark Cuban caricature, Russ Hanneman

I didn't know that's what they had intended. I never once thought that's what they were going for.

dmarlow··on How to Build a Great Series A Pitch and Deck
What about, "how to get in front of investors?"
dmarlow··on I built a lay-down desk
Never run when you can walk. Never walk when you can stand. Never stand when you can sit. Never sit when you can lay down. Never lay down when you can sleep.

I can't wait until I'm working in my sleep. /s

dmarlow··on Airbnb REQUIRES recording you call but if you want to record they REFUSE call
Instead of saying "we record this call", why not just replace it with "this call is being recorded"?

Seems that little bit more sneaky!

dmarlow··on Ask HN: Do people still use Bing.com?
Bing is a great search engine. Want to know how I know? I Googled it.

-Colbert

In all seriousness, I use Bing on my laptop and Google on my phone.

dmarlow··on US federal price tag for the post-9/11 wars is over $6.4T dollars
Before each war, leaders should sit down, write down hypothetical outcomes and see if they still feel it makes sense. Then, after the conflict, come back and see how their estimates were. I'm hopeful that people would be more prudent if they could foresee the impact of their decisions.
dmarlow··on London traders hit $500M jackpot when oil went negative
I think most people saw the opportunity, but just didn't know how to properly capitalize on it. At least that's where I was. I wasn't going to take delivery of any oil, that's for sure. At least nothing that stood to make anything significant from. Then, there was also the whole contango thing too.
dmarlow··on Ask HN: I have $450K cash, what should I do to maximize my return?
You can develop something on that land. Or, go for some more real estate (maybe get some multifamily), but leave ample reserves given the climate.
dmarlow··on ByteDance investors value TikTok at $50B in takeover bid
Let alone anyone talking about it anymore.
dmarlow··on Ask HN: I am at a startup for 7 years. What's next for me?
> I like to tinker with everything,... I like to think about the entire system and the business impact.

This sounds like me. I am still at a startup since early on and now I mostly focus on one thing. I now get extra time to devote to my passions and doing things "my way".

There should really be a group chat for first/early folks. I feel we take on significant risks that don't come with the correctly adjusted rewards.

dmarlow··on Cloudflare was down
For all my sibling comments, there is also context to be aware of. 5.5m page views daily can come is many shapes and sizes. Yes, modern web dev is a mess, but situation is very different from site to site. This should be taken as a nice anecdote, not as a benchmark.
dmarlow··on Ask HN: Is the Generalist Dead?
Not sure if you're interested in having people here contact you, but if you are, make sure your profile has the right info.
dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
No clue why they did. It was one thing after another, so it wasn't just the bottle issue. After a few inspections and things not being well kept, I decided it was best to not renew.

Do you honestly believe I expected them to beg for mercy at my feet? You need a reality check. The problem is that you don't fully understand the situation, the background, etc.

dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
The funny part about that shampoo bottle is that it's the same kind that they keep over the toilet in the cabinet... The reaction when I showed them the bottle was priceless.
dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
No, I claimed that I allowed my tenant to not pay their portion, at a cost to me in several ways. Please re-read my posts.
dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
I don't disagree. I hope I didn't come across any other way.
dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
I'm not sure where you jumped to the conclusion about denying housing. I have no problems with section 8. I gladly accept section 8. What I have a problem with is (and I speak from first hand experience), is allowing someone who is on section 8 to not pay their portion. I allowed this, got burned and learned a lesson.

I thought I was being kind and "helping them out". When, in reality, that individual didn't appreciate it and they didn't take better care of the place because of it. When other factors (e.g. the lying) caused me to not want to renew with the tenant, they caused over 10k damage and flooded my house in retaliation.

dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
I wasn't in it to seek rents, we were nearly breaking even. It happened to be a place I previously lived in and it was easier to rent than to sell during the great recession.
dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
I think you are very presumptuous. I grew up in poverty in a third world country and know what it's like to not eat, and when I did eat, I remember having to pick bugs out of my beans before cooking them.
dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
No, but the point was to ensure people pay what they're expected to pay. Not to give them a handout.
dmarlow··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
> if they can't pay the hundred bucks the government won't I sure don't care

I used to have this same mentality. Until the person who was renting one of my properties decided to lie about certain issues (like claiming a shampoo bottle lodged down one of the toilets was there for years). When I decided to not renew the lease with that tenant, they decided to cause considerable damage to our property.

Sometimes, when things come easy to people, they don't appreciate it. Holding people accountable helps them lift themselves up too.
