I do marketing and sales for a small ISV based in the city of Novosibirsk, South-West Siberia (yeah, you've read that right.) We are the only Java SE technology licensee in Russia, and our product is a spec-compliant JVM with an optimizing Ahead-Of-Time native compiler: https://www.excelsiorjet.com

dleskov··on Python is the only programming language in LinkedIn's 2013 Most Demanded Skills.
What do you think is so special about Python that it appeared four times in the list of 100 "most sought-after employers in the World", as LinkedIn put it, as one of the top three skills in demand?
dleskov··on HN Pizza Index: Cost of living by city
Novosibirsk, Russia: about $19 for a 1kg (2.2lb) pizza. I prefer a different delivery, which charges $7.3 for a much smaller, 320g (0.7kb) pizza.
dleskov··on Inexperienced doesn't mean stupid
We never run job ads for positions in our product team. In fact, we never have any open positions in that team. Instead, we have a very organic process of interns becoming employees.

Yes, it is slow. And we only retain one out of three - one drops out (of internship), one leaves for greener pastures shortly after graduation, and one sticks with the company for many years producing tons of value.

Any students reading this, find yourself a solid internship position as early as possible and you won't find yourself in Average Joe's shoes as Ile put it.

Small idea == (small risks, small returns)

Big idea == (big risks, big returns)

most of the time.

dleskov··on Why can a scam company raise $40 Million Series C + $76 Million Series B?
This is why I keep the balance on the debit card I use online at $1.xx, trading the inconvenience of having to transfer funds to it before each transaction for peace of mind.
dleskov··on Show HN: Natural Language Querying
Ah, you did not mention the URL has to contain a query. I assumed that mydomain.com.samuru.com would either display all mydomain.com pages you have indexed, or otherwise indicate that I will be searching within mydomain.com.
dleskov··on Show HN: Natural Language Querying
It does not seem to work. This includes your cnn.com example. Your home page is displayed instead.

Sorry, "my own Web site" should have read "my company's Web site", with user forum, product knowledge base, tutorials, articles, PDF documents, and the like. Planting AdSense on it would be nonsense.

We used to pay $100/year for Google Custom Search. They had problems processing our payment for this year's renewal, which they did not bother to resolve, so I've been looking for alternatives.

dleskov··on Show HN: Natural Language Querying
A bit disappointed that I cannot yet add Samuru to the list of search engines in FF. I switch between three engines multiple times each day.

By the way, will I be able to use it in place of Google Custom Search on my own Web site?

dleskov··on Why I Play Video Games
You don't have kids, do you?

I have not played anything but short streaks of casual games since the infancy of my first, maybe with the exception of 2011/12 winter break, when I snatched a $0 deal on Broken Sword reissued for iPad and played for several days in a row, which was very recreational indeed.

"New/changed since last month" would have been a great filter.
dleskov··on Dev Tools with Free for Open Source Plans
Disclosure: I work for Excelsior.

Excelsior JET (http://www.excelsiorjet.com), a Java SE JVM with a native code compiler and deployment toolkit, is free for non-commercial use. Note that "non-commercial" != "open source", both ways: there is commercial open-source and closed-source freeware.

A quick search for "excel diff" returns:

Are you sure neither would work for you?

dleskov··on Why I am building a product with a tiny market
You can make an Eclipse plugin and sell it to corporations and/or OEM license it to IDE/tool vendors.
dleskov··on Oberon – The Overlooked Jewel [pdf]
Just in case, we used to sell a standalone Oberon-2/Modula-2 development system for Windows and Linux. It is now available under a freeware license:

dleskov··on How can we get Google Support?
Google apparently doesn't want (to help) me to pay for a renewal of Custom Site Search. The payment status is "Pending" and our account has been downgraded. Have I missed the news about the death of that service coming?
dleskov··on Front-End CSS Frameworks
Preprocessor information is absolutely necessary.

High-level, vague descriptions are not.

Instead, I'd have some indicators of maturity, complexity and such - year introduced, version number, lines of code, documentation quality (okay, the last one is subjective.)

Actively developed/maintained or not?

Author name?

dleskov··on Ask HN: To obfuscate or not to obfuscate Java bytecode?
There are actually three ways other than obfustaction to protect your Java bytecode. I humbly suggest that you check out my article "Protect Your Java Code - Through Obfuscators And Beyond":
