dkobia··on Google co-founder Sergey Brin on leaving retirement to work on AI
One more cook with god mode access, yes. Imagine driving through a city and all the lights turning green. Agility at large companies is hampered by middle management and a fast pass helps.
dkobia··on Without belief in a god, but never without belief in a devil
It is extraordinary. Much of the hostility stems from the fact that most are distilling the article from the perspective of their tribe and somehow feeling attacked which is ironic considering the material.

The “frustration” echoed in the book and article is real. Most people today have had a taste of the things they didn’t know they wanted and more apt to join a movement.

dkobia··on Ask HN: What will it take to get more people using Mastodon more?
Most users don’t care about decentralization and having to select a server is a major turn off for most. Then, once you’re on, the feature that adds to Twitters network effect - the “Quote Retweet” is deliberately left out of Mastodon [1], to make conversation more civil and muted.

dkobia··on Batteries and Renewables Are Saving Texas During the Heat Wave
According to a report by the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the state’s electric grid manager, crypto mining “consumed” more than 3,300 Gigawatt/hours of Texas grid energy in 2022, more than double the amount used 2021.

Riot Platforms’ mine in Rockdale, Texas, uses about the same amount of electricity as the nearest 300,000 homes, making it the most power-intensive Bitcoin mining operation in America.[1]

dkobia··on Apple to Remove Nostr Damus from App Store for Bitcoin Tipping Feature
Regulatory oversight in addition to Apple looking for its cut is a good reason why this would have been blocked anyway. Few things out there are more regulated than the transfer of money, something the crypto economy is desperately trying to avoid.
dkobia··on The Meltdown at CNN
It is interesting that most of the reliable news organizations today are state owned or state funded — Deutche Welle, France 24, BBC News etc. Perhaps this is the only way to deliver non-partisan news. Investor driven news organizations are trapped in the inflammatory news industrial complex as they chase eyeballs and clicks for very short term gain.
dkobia··on More people are getting away with murder
Rather than tossing in a straw man, how about read the article?

- “People don't want to cooperate, people don't want to come to court and testify…”

- “But that mistrust is also bred by the department's chronic dysfunction…”

dkobia··on Ask HN: How do you think LLMs will affect society medium/long term?
This. An all knowing deity with whom one can have a real conversation. One wonders if this deity will also be jealous of other deities.
dkobia··on How Tesla Fumbled
To start with "Tesla has never been good at building cars" is pretty bold, then taking it up a notch by detailing why the emperor has no clothes.
dkobia··on Nostr.how – A Complete Guide to Nostr
I’ve been using Nostr, Mastodon and Twitter concurrently for the last few months. Nostr is absolutely fascinating in its simplicity and I really enjoyed writing a Python relay in a few days - more than I should have.

My thoughts:

- The NIPS are not as rigorously defined as RFC's but this is a vibrant community and things are taking shape.

- Relay scaling will be a problem, something Mastodon has discovered with the Twitter migration. The Damus app launch this week brought many relays to their knees. Inevitably as scale becomes necessary relays will centralize.

- Spam, which is free speech in itself, is getting out of control in the relays. Proof of work regulates bots but not crypto spammers.

- The relay construct while powerful, makes it difficult to build real communities with real constructive discourse, which requires some form of moderation. Some might call this censorship.

dkobia··on Tether ownership and company weaknesses revealed in documents
Crypto to me is a Ponzi scheme analogous to an almost perfect pathogen - doesn’t kill the host and comes back every fall. Greed ensures we always forget.
dkobia··on Apple offers $970 in trade-in value for $52,199 Mac Pro
There are easier ways to say they don't want it, which is what this says.
dkobia··on Ask HN: How do the recent tech layoffs affect salaries in the job market?
The demand for staff/senior engineers remains high and salaries the same but demand for entry level/junior engineers has dropped along with salaries as many companies enact austerity measures.
dkobia··on Ask HN: Is programming a “young person's game”?
I am in my 40’s and probably programming more now than I did in my 20’s. I enjoy exploring new languages and new paradigms. That feeling of impacting someone somewhere with code I’ve written is intoxicating - much more when someone pays a $1 to use a product or service I had a hand in. Throw in speed and cost optimizations and it all feels great.

I am married with kids and life can get busy. Programming sometimes feels like a guilt free escape especially when compared to gaming or watching sports. I manage my time better because I’m forced to which makes my programming escapes much more organized and impactful.

dkobia··on Instagram to increase ad load as Meta fights revenue decline
A vicious feedback loop that will only expedite its decline.
dkobia··on Companies are paying huge sums to show their ads to bots
“Victimless crime” - I think not. Most affected are small businesses and startups with precious marketing dollars that can no longer afford to run an App Install campaign that reaches real users instead of bots. The big dogs can brute force their way through this. I’d venture to say that Ad fraud is a moat in itself.
dkobia··on Meta’s metaverse hype leads to real-world backlash
Severely underestimating deep pockets, determination and short term memory in the rest of us.
dkobia··on Bank of America just launched a zero down payment mortgage in 21 cities
As always a token of good faith from bankers only makes sense when viewed through the lens of Gordon Gekko - “It’s all about bucks, kid. The rest is conversation.”
dkobia··on JPMorgan: “El Salvador Reduces Fiscal Deficit, Despite Bitcoin”
A few “fiat takes” on El Salvador to compare this blog post to:

dkobia··on Can the Visa-Mastercard duopoly be broken?
The Finance industry is especially attuned to this type of distribution mostly from dealing with pretty intense risk. The strongest players rise to the top fast and a moat of trust weeds out the rest. Crypto despite the ideological objectives is not immune to this.
dkobia··on Documents reveal McKinsey's role increasing opioid sales until 2019
Generally speaking if you are an authoritarian government or rogue company and can afford a company like McKinsey, they will take your money to consult and provide legitimacy. Scruples are overrated in this industry.
dkobia··on Upptime/upptime: Uptime monitor and status page powered by GitHub
Also, GitHub actions is not necessarily free. There is a $0.008/minute fee for every run. You just don’t think about it because you have minutes included in your current plan. This tool runs every 5 minutes which by my math equates to ~8640 runs/month. GitHub’s free edition has 2000 minutes/month. You can see how this might actually be great for GitHub’s bottom line.
dkobia··on DuckDuckGo faces controversy over tracking agreement with Microsoft
Another vote for Kagi here. What a breath of fresh air. I didn’t think they could pull it off but it seems they have.
dkobia··on Netflix’s bad habits have caught up with it
Bridgerton, set in an alternate universe is a show that has had a pretty intense trigger effect. The idea of black people playing Regency era personalities is unacceptable for some despite being obviously far from historically accurate to the point of being classified as “dumb and disgusting”.
dkobia··on I replaced my native iOS app with a cross platform web app and no-one noticed
I love to build both native and hybrid apps and while you have a pretty good write up you’ve made some pretty bold claims for a handful of app installs. I did try out your apps and to be quite honest they do feel very webby (non-native). For the use case however I suppose it works.

dkobia··on Twitter Should Open Up the Algorithm
The most contentious moderation happens via subjective human intervention rather than an algorithms. Fully machine driven moderation is a black hole into which copious amounts of time and money from the r&d labs of the biggest social media companies disappear into every year for a long time now.
dkobia··on Putin’s War Is an Existential Crisis for the United Nations
The UN was always meant to be just a multilateral space where the players were diplomats who’s job is to cultivate and maintain alliances. If it had teeth (enforcement power) it would essentially be an unelected government and most sovereign nation would reject that. Compromise as a solution to conflict seems to be something we’re finding less palatable these days.
dkobia··on Apple’s Universal Control
Have the exact same setup, 16" M1 Max, and a 14" M1 Pro and handoff issues can get annoying. Sometimes the issue is caused by switching the initializing screen push from one computer to the other. In essence changing the master, which decides who’s peripherals will be shared. This definitely feels “beta” as they’ve labeled it. A lot of progress but beta and I tip my hat to the team working on it.
dkobia··on Blogger in Ohio discovered runner in Florida cheating in a half-marathon (2017)
TIL: independent marathon investigators exist. What a great read and brilliant sleuthing on the investigators part. It is crazy how far the cheater went to cover their tracks.
