dkjaudyeqooe··on Abundance isn't going to happen unless politicians are scared of the status quo
In the sense that the center is where the action is, and votes are, and the left and right fringes attract too much attention and influence.
dkjaudyeqooe··on Abundance isn't going to happen unless politicians are scared of the status quo
> Yet "tangled up in social issues" remains a popular misconception. Why?

Do you think declaring their preferred pronouns helped liberal politicians? Who did it ultimately help? Probably the Trump campaign.

Also, "defund the police" is easily the stupidest political slogan ever. It's bewildering. Did no one think "Reform the police" was a winner? And yet liberal politicians lapped it up.

Your assumptions are wrong. Kamala lost because of inflation during the Biden admin and some related missteps. Also her gender and skin color likely worked against her.

Also you're misreading my point, campaigning on these things isn't a panacea, but delivering on them just might be.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Abundance isn't going to happen unless politicians are scared of the status quo
Part of the courage needed is not pandering to the left.
dkjaudyeqooe··on Abundance isn't going to happen unless politicians are scared of the status quo
Instead of getting tangled up in social issues, liberal politicians should be prioritizing housing, infrastructure and government services supporting people's economic activity of all kinds.

Delivering better lives for people, and having the courage to stand up to vested interests, from house owners to corporations, would create a huge and lasting political win across a broad section of the electorate.

Because HN has become much like X, with an aggressive pro Trump element abusing the system.

People claim it's because its due to "irrelevant politics" but HN is probably 70% off topic subjects, tangentially connected to tech, etc. But no one is flagging these other off topic posts.

I can also see it in any comment I make which doesn't conform to right wing dogma getting voted up in the EU time zone, then getting voted down in the US timezone.

Denying due process for these sorts of incidents is a hallmark of the current administration. Central to it is vilification of immigrants and false association with terrorists.
dkjaudyeqooe··on Germany is unlocking billions to supercharge its military at a seismic moment
Why don't you address the point instead of prevaricating? The narrative you're describing is not based on any facts but simple hate for the EU. Rejecting the plain facts doesn't help you.

> I think it's not an exaggeration to say LLMs are now better than 95+% of the population at mathematical reasoning.

It's not an exaggeration it's a non-sequitur, you first have to show that the LLMs are reasoning in the same way humans do.

You're misrepresenting what the link says, and it doesn't even apply to bananas.

What is does say is that certain fruits and vegetables don't benefit from "minimum marketing standards" and some misshapen products may be sold if labeled as intended for processing.

What all this is is reasonable efforts to define standards for marketing, but it misrepresented by "British propaganda" as something hysterical, just like you misrepresent the press release for the sake of your straw man argument.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Germany is unlocking billions to supercharge its military at a seismic moment
War is the consequence of a lack of defense, not the opposite. Nothing could illustrates that more than the period since 1947 and the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Never has the world been so heavily armed. We have nukes that can wipe each other out at the press of a button. The result? A period of peace unprecedented in human history.

Putin invaded Ukraine because he thought he could win easily. Countries don't risk their existence in that way unless lead by madmen.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Germany is unlocking billions to supercharge its military at a seismic moment
> So while the left and center of the US largely views this whole saga as a catastrophic loss of the US brand and foreign policy aims, this kind of rearmament is exactly what Trump promised his base he'd make happen.

It's a catastrophic loss of influence. It's a good thing for Europe but terrible for the US. I think that Trump will end up fulfilling his promise is co-incidental. Trump's a lose cannon who's alienated all of America's friends, that he achieved some relatively minor goal is like being proud of losing weight because you have cancer.

Europe has a chance here to become a political superpower, strongly eroding the US centric world view and having influence though something other than brute force of money or military power, which is what China and US are trying to project.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Germany is unlocking billions to supercharge its military at a seismic moment
> From what? There's no serious indication of a russian threat to invade western europe.

The same was said of Ukraine. It made no sense, people thought Putin wouldn't be so self destructive, but here we are.

Given the stakes and consequences of being wrong, Europe is doing the right thing. Even a 5% chance of Putin invading Europe is worth buying an insurance policy for, given that Europe's existing policy has proved worthless.

> All of this is in addition to the reality that peace is more economically productive, and war is just one big murderous disaster.

You make it sound like war is a choice one makes, and that laying down arms, appeasement or surrender is a solution. It's been proved time and again that that just leads to more war.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Tesla falls after Commerce secretary recommends buying stock
Thats a good way to approach it, essentially customise your view of HN.

The front page is pretty ordinary most of the time because of uninteresting items, or interesting items have fallen off.

Of course the problem with flagging is it distorts what people see, or can see, since it essentially hides the topic (or at least burys it).

dkjaudyeqooe··on Tesla falls after Commerce secretary recommends buying stock
No I'm not, I'm saying this particular subject should not be treated differently.

I only reference politics because it's other people's focus, or excuse for censoring.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Tesla falls after Commerce secretary recommends buying stock
So guilt by association? Wow.

This is pure authoritarian shtick.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Tesla falls after Commerce secretary recommends buying stock
Whatever you think about Musk or Trump, it's very strange that government officials are pushing each other's stock. It's a hard sell you'd expect from a boiler room:

"It's unbelievable that this guy's stock is this cheap. It'll never be this cheap again."

"I mean, who wouldn't invest in Elon Musk? You gotta be kidding me."

dkjaudyeqooe··on Tesla falls after Commerce secretary recommends buying stock
Your empty smear just reinforces his point.

Those who are in the "out" group get one treatment, the "in" group gets the opposite.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Tesla falls after Commerce secretary recommends buying stock
Expect this post, and any even obliquely critical of Musk or Trump, to be flagged into oblivion.

I've tried to not be cynical but it's bleedingly obvious that there are a group of Musk/Trump supporters here flagging these posts.

Various discussions claim that it's political (and thus "off topic") posts that are flooding HN but there has been very few appearing on the front page, even though they're sunk out of view these posts attract many upvotes and comments.

There are all sorts of off-topic and incidental posts on HN and that's always been the case. Now there is aggressive censorship of one type of post. Just skipping or hiding posts that you're not interested in is not enough apparently.

There is not much that can be done about it, dang has essentially shrugged, which is fine. But please lets not pretend its not happening and that it's not absolutely repugnant.

dkjaudyeqooe··on The Intenet Slum: is abandoning the Internet the next big thing? (2004)
I think it's not abandoning the internet, it's abandoning the web, which is arguably the worst and best thing about the internet.

Like you, most people want to take the narrow bits of the internet that are useful to them and ignore the rest. Meanwhile the web is trying to make you do the opposite, drawing you in and wasting your time.

Over time this will mean leaving the web entirely for new and better interfaces that block out the toxic sludge and return control to the user.

dkjaudyeqooe··on Wall Street’s ‘Private Rooms’
> functionally a wealth transfer from grandma to an institutional trader

This makes no sense. Grandma can only lose money if she sells, most are not actively trading in the market.

Also large trades are in both directions. Some are trying to unload large holdings and some are trying to build large holdings. These pools are merely trying to find other large transactions to be the counterparty, the net effect is to reduce volatility in the open market, which is the whole point: price stability for their transaction.

dkjaudyeqooe··on We're adding a new pooled storage model to G Suite legacy free edition
I agree, but I'm wondering if Google are really going to allow people to have 3TB of storage free in perpetuity on a standard 200 user account.

I guess people with unlimited users might create even larger pools.

dkjaudyeqooe··on All Tuberculosis programs funded by the U.S. Gov were officially terminated
It's good policy. I could go into detail but the short version is we live on a single planet, what goes around comes around. Some people think the US can isolate itself and not worry about what the rest of the world does or thinks, but that is a dangerous delusion.

What ever assistance we provide others is paid back in other ways, just like being neighborly isn't mandatory but is a very good idea.

dkjaudyeqooe··on All Tuberculosis programs funded by the U.S. Gov were officially terminated
It's infectious and deadly, it actually doesn't have to do anything more to scare the bejesus out of people and have profound social and economic effects, should it show up in numbers in the future.
