dkasper··on Low Cost Mini PCs
I agree, might buy another pi 4 for my next project. The new chips are interesting though.
dkasper··on Ask HN: Do we need to pay billions in fees to Stripe, Block, PayPal and Visa/MC?
Absolutely not true. Some places still don’t even take tap to pay and still use chip.
dkasper··on Ex-Google CEO: AI startups can steal IP and hire lawyers to 'clean up the mess'
It depends on the framing. “Stealing” content that someone else created is universally derided. Slurping up the internet and distributing it to billions of users is an economic model.
dkasper··on Ditch banks – Go with money market funds and treasuries
You can buy treasuries and money market funds with Chase self directed accounts.
dkasper··on Doomsday Prepping: Reactionary Behavior or Inherited Instinct?
Being prepared is part of community resilience. This is a false dichotomy. If you are totally unprepared for anything you are a burden on the community. If you at least have some basic ability to survive and help out others in an emergency that is anything but foolish for the community to support. Of course you should also invest in the community and other collective resources as well.
dkasper··on Volcanoes can affect climate
Could work, or could end up like snowpiercer
dkasper··on Barcelona will eliminate tourist apartments
There should be easier ways to hedge real estate inflation than owning an airbnb.
dkasper··on Turn On, Tune In, Write Code
I think you’ve mostly got it, but it doesn’t mean drop out of life it means drop out of the mainstream and be self reliant.

Leary explained it directly: > "Turn on" meant go within to activate your neural and genetic equipment. Become sensitive to the many and various levels of consciousness and the specific triggers engaging them. Drugs were one way to accomplish this end. "Tune in" meant interact harmoniously with the world around you—externalize, materialize, express your new internal perspectives. "Drop out" suggested an active, selective, graceful process of detachment from involuntary or unconscious commitments. "Drop Out" meant self-reliance, a discovery of one's singularity, a commitment to mobility, choice, and change. Unhappily, my explanations of this sequence of personal development are often misinterpreted to mean "Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity".[4]

dkasper··on Ask HN: 30y After 'On Lisp', PAIP etc., Is Lisp Still "Beating the Averages"?
The REPL is why I like python a lot as well, although it is not as powerful as lisp where you can inspect and modify running code easily, it really is a key feature for prototyping new ideas. More languages should have repls
dkasper··on Ask HN: Anyone left their job because of RTO?
Real estate companies are generally not wielding any power over tech companies… tech companies have all the leverage in any office leasing deals right now. I’m sure there are exceptions though.
dkasper··on How Safe Is SF?
Two of the intersections mentioned (boardman & Bryant, eddy & jones) are where police stations are. Is there a problem with the data where they just use the location of the police station by default?
dkasper··on GPT-4o
I think the issue there is less of a technical one and more of an issue with deepfakes and copyright
dkasper··on FTX Has Billions More Than Needed to Pay Bankruptcy Victims
Well I meant crypto related investments too. But Anthropic might be a big piece of it, so I guess I stand “corrected”
dkasper··on FTX Has Billions More Than Needed to Pay Bankruptcy Victims
It’s mostly because crypto is close to all time highs again.
dkasper··on Anyone got a contact at OpenAI. They have a spider problem
I was thinking along the lines of answering with correct information but not following the prompts. Maybe this could be considered confabulation also.
dkasper··on Anyone got a contact at OpenAI. They have a spider problem
That’s a great word for some types of hallucinations. But some things that are called hallucinations may not be memory errors.
dkasper··on Mistral AI Launches New 8x22B MOE Model
Has anyone had success making an auto-gpt with any models? Besides toy use cases
dkasper··on Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data
Not sure this is a good conjecture. The main reasons are 1) AI’s are expected to have incredible range that the average human does not 2) humans actually do take in enormous amounts of data but it happens over the course of many years and most of it is audio/visual/tactile/experience.

We already see that if you want to focus on a narrow skillset you can use a much smaller model and training set. But right now it is a race because everyone wants to be the one true generalized intelligence model.

dkasper··on Can Demis Hassabis save Google?
Imo the criticisms are more cultural or philosophical than technical, ie the Gemini image search kerfuffle. Clearly Google and Anthropic have a lot of solid people.
dkasper··on 2K earthquakes in 1 day off Canada coast
Quite literally a magnitude 5 is 10000x the strength of mag 1!
dkasper··on Both pilots of an A320 fell asleep in the cockpit for 28 minutes
Edge cases
dkasper··on Software Infrastructure 2.0: A Wishlist (2021)
Fugazi is my favorite word for it. Also snafu.
dkasper··on My streaming fatigue got so bad I started collecting DVDs
People forgot about scratched dvds, it’s been too long ;)
dkasper··on Seaborn bug responsible for finding of declining disruptiveness in science
Sounds like a plot point from three body problem.
dkasper··on The Earth is getting greener
It basically comes down to long term pain vs short term pain. I don’t think many people would have a problem with improving our civilization’s quality of life in the long run if it didn’t cause any lifestyle changes in the present. That’s a reason why Tesla’s marketing has worked; you can not only be “green” but also drive one of the fastest cars on the planet.
dkasper··on Apple Vision Pro users reporting cracked outer surfaces
I will chime in and say I also had a MacBook Pro screen replaced for dead pixels, no questions asked, no charge.
dkasper··on The Xylophone Maze: Screen-free coding for children
I feel like a next level would be RoboRally. One of my all time favorite “programming” games. I think it may still be in production
dkasper··on Why is no one making a new version of old Facebook?
The really old school Facebook didn’t even have feeds. You spent time on there because you had to check out everyone’s walls.
dkasper··on Ask HN: How many of you Apple developers still use Objective C?
Not only objective-c but lots of c++ (useful for cross platform libraries that run on targets besides ios/macos) and that road leads to objective-c++. But at least at Meta many iOS projects use swift now too.
dkasper··on AI Restaurant Menu with RAG
I prefer the physical menu to look at but it is a huge convenience to use toast or similar apps to order on your phone and then pay whenever you’re ready to leave. No need to wait for the servers for who knows how long in a busy restaurant.
