djyaz1200··on Study found corporate recruiters have a bias against ex-entrepreneurs
This seems true based on my experience. I've taken two startups from 0-$100,000/month in revenue on shoestring budgets, and I've tried for years to get a corporate job with no luck.
djyaz1200··on Google Is Staring Down Its First Serious Threats in Years
My interactions with Google products remind me of 90's Microsoft. They are so rich and so well protected by their de facto monopoly that they institutionally give no F**s.

Example: In 2024, I have to go into my AdWords account daily and prevent them from adding irrelevant search terms they decide I should use to eat up my PPC budget. At best, that's user-hostile, if not outright theft.

I pay openAI $20 a month as a user and another $2.5K for their API for our business, and if I could put a memo in the payments, it would be FGooG. I don't think OpenAI is any better, but I'm ready for some new flavor of corruption.

Google is eventually going to have to pay for decades of user-hostile behavior. They just aren't loved; there is no stored-up goodwill there, which means if someone else has a better mousetrap, they die. Programmatically letting companies bid against each other for their Yellow Pages listing clearly is the most lucrative business model in the history of the Earth, but let's see what's next.

djyaz1200··on Launch HN: DryMerge (YC W24) – Automate Workflows with Plain English
Congrats on the launch, I wish you all the best! My $0.02 is that the big money market for this category of capability is for adversarial integrations. There are ancient CRM's like RedTail that serve 100K+ financial services professionals that will not integrate with anyone.
djyaz1200··on I always knew I was different, I didn't know I was a sociopath
Sociopaths do love publicity
djyaz1200··on A ragtag band of internet friends became the best at forecasting world events
Xi Jinping is on the record, saying they are taking Taiwan. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/china/xi-warned-biden-summit-be...

The only questions are when and how and what will the rest of the world will do about it.

djyaz1200··on Artificial Intelligence Act: MEPs adopt law
Interested to see what comes of this... "Publishing summaries of copyrighted data used for training"
djyaz1200··on Apple Vision Pro's components cost $1,542–but that's not the full story
That's a good point for other Apple products, but in this case, many other companies are not supporting the "platform" (Netflix, Spotify, YouTube); this may diminish the LTV of Vision Pro and its successors. I mention successors because the obvious next step is to put a $600 fancy detachable headband on an iPhone and call it Apple Vision (not pro).

It may be that Apple's abusive track record in the App Store ends up getting them locked out of whatever the next thing is since it's clear that gated, extractive monopolistic practices are core to their identity and business model.

djyaz1200··on Launch HN: Retell AI (YC W24) – Conversational Speech API for Your LLM
I tried the demo, and it got confused and disconnected, but it's a cool proof of concept. Suggest bumping up the happiness emotion on the agent, and a Calendly integration would immediately unlock a lot of use cases. Good luck!
djyaz1200··on FCC rules AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal
I run a company that automates B2C sales lead follow on multiple channels and we use AI to leave polite messages for folks who consent based on their inquiry.

The problem we are solving is that about 1/3 of all web leads are fraudulent. Our clients are having trouble sorting through which leads are real people who want to do business and which ones are bots/BS. This ruling is disappointing.

There are better ways to solve this problem, as described for many years here and elsewhere there should be "postage" for messaging and calling. Sender pays, and they get their money back in full if the recipient responds. Costs spammers millions, costs normal people nothing or very close.

djyaz1200··on Ask HN: When to Start a Business?
Counterpoint to starting a business: the founder of Nvidia, who is worth tens of billions, says if he had it to do over again, he wouldn't. Starting and running a business takes a tremendous toll. https://www.forbes.com/sites/julianteicke/2023/10/28/jensen-...

If you insist on proceeding... Validate demand first; once you find something you're sure people want, you know a great deal about these people and enjoy working with them. You're sure you can find lots of them, and you find the core problem you're working on fun and interesting.

My dad told me... "A successful business is when you can do something badly and people will still pay you for it." That's key in a startup because it takes a long time and a lot of money to do most things well, so you need customers who will settle for ok.

Good luck!

djyaz1200··on SMS Censorship
Delivered or not is too extreme, just like email phones should have a spam folder that suspicious messages are quietly delivered to, users can check that folder and identify messages that are ok. That feedback could improve the sorting.
djyaz1200··on Ask HN: Early stage startup attorney in NYC?
Fenwick and West has been great for us, they get things done. They are expensive but not abusive with fees, and they let us defer payment for awhile in the beginning.

Good luck!

djyaz1200··on US national debt surpasses $34T for first time
"The total public debt outstanding reached $34.001 trillion Friday, just more than three months after first crossing the $33 trillion mark."

So US is adding about $1T per quarter in deficit?

Serious question, do deficits matter? Does this need to be resolved and if so how?

djyaz1200··on Nvidia's earnings are up 206% from last year as it continues riding the AI wave
Agree, can someone(s) more knowledgeable about this field share their thoughts on how defensible Nvidia's position is in the short and long term?

Like are companies like this a credible threat? https://www.cerebras.net/

I hear a big part of Nvidia's lock-in is that they provide software that runs these AI projects?

djyaz1200··on Ransomware Group Files SEC Complaint over Victim's Failure Disclose Data Breach
Agree the incentives are a mess. SEC needs to change the incentives.

For example, the process for filing complaints could include a $1M fee refundable at 2X if you're right and a tax-paying citizen and/or entity.

These types of hackers exist outside of a society ruled by law, and it's unacceptable to let them leverage the tools of a civilized society if they don't live within its rules and pay taxes.

If someone has a better idea for how to fix the incentives, I'd be sincerely interested to hear it.

djyaz1200··on Waze will now warn drivers about crash dangers using historical data
"Imagine if we had the tech to apply speed governors in places with high crash rates! What if departments of transportation could lower speeds dynamically to make sure that risky road infrastructure is made safer."

This, of course, could be done, but what if people driving fast are rushing to flee a rapidly advancing forest fire, tidal wave, active shooter, etc?

As a check on the ever-growing power of government and surveillance tech, anytime a system is capable of taking away someone's liberty, there should be a human in the loop on the other side to make sure those decisions are reasonable.

Edit: Or just don't take away their liberty at all

djyaz1200··on Chief Executive of National Association of Realtors Resigns
Where are we going and why am I in this hand basket?
djyaz1200··on Google Adsense is transitioning to per-impression payments for publishers
Didn't Barry Dillar go see Sergey and Larry early in Google's beginnings? I think the direct quote was "you are f'ing up the magic" referring to the fact that advertisers don't know what's working, and Google was ruining that. Although it's taken them many years they seem to now be taking his advice to heart.

I looked to cite this but couldn't find it on Google, so I may be mistaken...

djyaz1200··on The EV transition trips over its own cord
In addition to the factors you list to encourage mass adoption, the batteries should get about double the current range and charge in 10 minutes. Which according to Toyota is coming with solid state.

It would also be helpful if the warrantees on these electrics where much longer, and/or if most EVs moved toward a leasing model. Consumers are rightly concerned about the long term maintenance and resale value uncertainty around electrics.

djyaz1200··on 37signals Introduces "Once" - Buy software one time

djyaz1200··on Prompting, realized, and unrealized bias in generative AI

djyaz1200··on We are wasting up to 20% of our time on computer problems, says study
Thank goodness I can enjoy these same frustrations when I sit down to watch to TV thanks to all the bugs with the various streaming services.
djyaz1200··on ‘His ideas resonate’: how the Unabomber’s dangerous anti-tech manifesto lives on
Kaczynski was a loser. He couldn't manage to turn a Harvard degree into a productive role in society so he waged a cowardly war on people who did nothing to harm him.

The detailed list of specific injuries to victims here is sad... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kaczynski

djyaz1200··on Tesla plans for 375,000 Cybertrucks per year
That's a valid concern that I've heard brought up and never heard it addressed, I'd assume they would make the steel very thin, or switch to aluminum.

Whatever the manufacturing challenges are would be worth addressing to essentially have no paint.

You can have your Tesla in any color as long as it's bare metal.

djyaz1200··on Royal Navy says quantum navigation test a success

djyaz1200··on Proliferation of AI weapons among non-state actors could be impossible to stop
You rickrolled me a bit there, bravo :)
djyaz1200··on Proliferation of AI weapons among non-state actors could be impossible to stop
Can anyone shed light on what the weapons would be?

I imagine it could be used to make unlimited hacking attempts on websites and industrial control systems (power grids). Could be used for propaganda also. Are those what everyone is worried about or is there much more to it I'm not considering?

djyaz1200··on China Simulates Attacking Taiwan from All Sides with Help from Its Carrier Force
We (America) should provide Taiwan with nuclear weapons and whatever other armaments they want to BUY. Heck, let them buy some aircraft carriers if they want.

America needs to stop being the world police and start being an arms dealer. We have the weapons, democracies that want to buy them to defend their borders from tyrants are welcome to. The notion that we should send our young people to put their lives on the line for some other country is absurd. Let them fight for their own freedom with American weapons.

djyaz1200··on SpaceX is getting ready to test its Starlink satellite-to-cell phone service
I think this is why he bought Twitter (although I don't endorse the decision). If you can access space from phones and he runs the worlds open messaging system that would change a lot... specifically because then governments would have a harder time turning off the internet. I don't see how he could profit massively from that but I do see how it might create something bigger than the arab spring around the world.
djyaz1200··on Changes at YC
I'd be very interested in the specifics of how and why late stage investing is so different that the success of YC in early stages doesn't translate.
