djohnston··on Fully autonomous AI agents should not be developed
How do you programmatically interact w cursor??
djohnston··on 20k federal workers take "buyout" so far, official says
Really? There must be some replacement who steps in though, no? Otherwise districts would have no representation, which seems unlikely.
djohnston··on 20k federal workers take "buyout" so far, official says
It's remarkable that, for a bunch of young people who don't know what they're doing, they've completely decimated any competitors - both public and private.
djohnston··on The FAA’s Hiring Scandal
You should RTFA before making such an obviously disprovable assertion.

djohnston··on Scientists find links between Alzheimer's, herpes, and head trauma
So it's APOE-4 + HSV-1 + subsequent head trauma in a model? Interesting, but not particularly shocking - there have been associations with all three of those independently, no?

I'm still waiting for the research community to let the amyloid theory die its long-deserved death and start focusing on tau; hopefully it will restore some momentum towards clinical treatments/prevention.

djohnston··on Are Americans' perceptions of the economy and crime broken?
I agree - the desire to not step in feces and other bodily fluids while walking in SF does seem like a foreign moral system when I'm there.
djohnston··on Are Americans' perceptions of the economy and crime broken?
Right, there are definitely perverse incentives afoot from a reporting standpoint on the part of police departments. Additionally, my allusion to the opiate issue is meant to convey that - while a horde of drug addicts at the train station may not actually commit a crime, they certainly make the place feel less safe, which is what people actually experience.
djohnston··on Are Americans' perceptions of the economy and crime broken?
Ah, well that I totally agree with. I think it's a cultural issue in a lot of the West tbh. It is considered impolite or improper to discuss financials with friends, neighbours, even family sometimes. You also see that aversion in Westerners discomfort with bargaining in marketplaces. Like with most of our ills, I blame the British.
djohnston··on Are Americans' perceptions of the economy and crime broken?
"Hey, I know your granddad bought the family home with his job at the local grocer, and you need to saddle 100K in student debt just to have a shot of buying a home by the time you're 35, but don't be sad, SP500 is at an all-time high!"
djohnston··on Are Americans' perceptions of the economy and crime broken?
Also the cost of food, the impossibility of affording a home, etc. Not really just "perception" is it?
djohnston··on Are Americans' perceptions of the economy and crime broken?
It seems wrong to mix crime and economic perceptions here.

With crime, there's a clearcut explanation of objective statistics going down and media focus giving the perception that things are more dangerous than they truly are. Fair enough. Although, I'm not sure the drug zombies are counted in these statistics and they've proliferated like rabbits in most major cities. Whether crime is down, the social fabric of these places has definitely been tarnished.

With the economy, the financialization of everything has completely disconnected macro-economic statistics (GDP) from the consumer experience. Inflation skyrocketed in 2022 - that's not debatable. The rate has come down, which just means things are getting more expensive but more slowly. Homes are out of reach for most young people - which did not used to be the case. GDP is up - who the hell cares?

djohnston··on 60k people deactivated their X accounts on average each day in one week alone
Few things I despise more than an absolute number provided with no context. Is 60K a lot? A little? The usual? How much does it deviate from the norm?
djohnston··on Americans React to UnitedHealthcare CEO's Murder: 'My Empathy Is Out of Network'
Yeah agreed. I mean these words have been diluted to hell. It’s all just statistical models, random number generator being one lol.
djohnston··on Americans React to UnitedHealthcare CEO's Murder: 'My Empathy Is Out of Network'
If they manage to catch this guy, it would be fascinating to watch jury selection. Trying to find people who haven’t been fucked by health insurance will be near impossible.

I would bet he walks regardless of evidence.

Also Greece - I can't remember their name, 17 November?
djohnston··on Americans React to UnitedHealthcare CEO's Murder: 'My Empathy Is Out of Network'
His innovation was to deploy AI models to automate claim denials. The system didn't make him to do that. He's responsible for the deaths of thousands and is rightly receiving 0 sympathy for his demise.
djohnston··on Ask HN: How do I search the web in the age of enshittified search engines?
The HYDE approach as it’s called in RAG vernacular.

djohnston··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
Force-feeding adderall to developing brains will eventually be viewed the same way we view lobotomies - a crude and cruel method of control. These children absolutely are victims of a sick system.

djohnston··on City council faces £216.5M loss over Oracle system debacle
I think the Uk could show some gusto here and implement these systems in-house and open sourced. There’s nothing innovative or unsolved in this domain.
djohnston··on A new book shows how the power of companies is destabilizing governance
No offence taken :).

I would say the main difference between (1) and (2) is the nature of the compulsion.

If my company town sucks and I’m talented, I can find a better company town.

But with the state, such agency is either high friction or downright impossible to achieve. For instance, if Im American living abroad, I still am required to file my taxes to the American state, even if my life and employment has nothing to do with my place of birth.

A company town never gains that much power.

I have a question for you, regarding

> I also believe that the "less state, the better". But what about a state that is controlled by council composed of worker and citizen councils?

Is this a system like in ancient Athens, where regular folk were basically selected at random to serve in govt for a rotation? I like it! But, I don’t understand how this system precludes private property.

djohnston··on A new book shows how the power of companies is destabilizing governance
Not all are created equal. I do get the impression that the Nordic states maintain responsible governance and generally have a vested interest in the success of their people. But most Western states are a malignant plague of cronyism and theft with no hope of recovery. We are genuinely in the phase “steal as much as you can before the show is over”. Taxes will continue to rise, austerity will increase, and the state will oversee the continued transfer of wealth from the public to its corrupt benefactors.
djohnston··on A new book shows how the power of companies is destabilizing governance
The state is the primary means by which wealth is siphoned from the public to private interests. You see it with lobbyists, Covid scams, politicians amassing millions on a 200,000 salary. The state is the enemy. If tech companies (and technology generally) are stripping power from the state, so be it. In 100 years we’ll look back at the carcass of the nation state the way we do the Catholic Church.

djohnston··on Boeing is a cautionary tale about current American manufacturing
As a “builder” it’s quite frustrating to watch MBA chads and PE firms kill engineering cultures for short term profits. But they’re also like cancer for a business - an inevitable outcome of senescence that should create the conditions for a healthy young successor to emerge and consume its resources. The problem is that the tumour has learned to pay off the politicians and remain “alive” much longer than it could in nature.

So now we’re left with a bunch of rotting metastasised zombies building airplanes that automatically nose dive and space craft that leak.
