djklanac··on Taking CO2 out of the air would be an expensive way to fight climate change
Given climate change's existential consequences, the price seems like a steal. Compare it to 2023 DoD budget of $773 billion [1] and the _net_ interest the feds paid on national debt in 2023 of $659 billion [2].

Certainly, we should implement numerous intervention strategies to combat climate change. Government spending seems largely unaccountable to citizens outside of the lobbyist elite. Why not, at least, spend some Monopoly money on something that might actually work?

djklanac··on Calls grow for Sundar Pichai to step down from Google CEO position
> Re-focus on merit and clear goals.

Googler here. We've structured the company to extract rent rather than innovate. We hire outsiders who are supposed to help us "grow up". That means processes and staying in your lane. Managers actively discourage work on 20% projects, because we "have a business to run."

Leadership needs to allow us to build things again. And they need to also recognize that innovative ideas can originate outside of SV and NYC.

djklanac··on An urban myth about litter boxes in schools became a talking point
The first and only occurrence I’ve heard of this claim was Rogan’s podcast. The article lumps him in with other claimants. But it doesn’t actually demonstrate that his anecdote is fabricated. How does this portion of the article make it past the editor? It’s entirely possible that his story is completely made up. It is also possible that it’s not made up. Tabloid journalists make conjectures. Real journalists substantiate their claims. We deserve better reporting.
djklanac··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
It doesn't take authority to effect change. You'd be surprised at what you can accomplish once you figure out how who owns the various fragments of the solution.

OP – My offer to help still stands. I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. Sorry doesn't fix it. I realize that. But I want to make it right.

djklanac··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
Googler here. I'd like to help. DM me https://twitter.com/david_klanac
djklanac··on Ask HN: What has been your experience with bigger tech companies in London?
Agree. I’m a US citizen who lived in London. The cost of essentials are actually very affordable in the UK. Your lifestyle excludes the need to acquire material goods. If earning money is your primary focus, I would choose the US. These are my prime earning years and am happy to be here. Otherwise, I found the UK to be an amazing place to live. I look forward to hanging it all up and returning to a quiet village in the Cotswalds.
djklanac··on Ask HN: What is your favorite book for learning statistics?
Thank you all for your suggestions! I can’t wait to get started.
djklanac··on Ask HN: Recommended FDIC-insured bank that supplies services to fintech apps?
Thank you both for your answers! Great ideas.
djklanac··on Show HN: I built a Rotten Tomatoes-style platform for durable products
Love the concept. I find it nearly impossible to buy products that are made well and intended to last longer than a year. Any plans to lead a movement, because I’m in.
djklanac··on Look ma, no mouse: Vimium
It’s the best extension I’ve installed. I only wish it would permit single hand navigation as a setting (e.g. left hand only with right on mouse all the time)
djklanac··on Americans Are Giving Made-in-China the Cold Shoulder: Bloomberg
I hope to see a democratic China in my lifetime. Rationalize the “cold shoulder” however you like. But the CCP has so much more than to answer for beyond their self-interested COVID cover-up. Ask a Uighur Muslim who’s fortunate enough to “graduate” from their re-education camp. Or maybe inquire further with one of the untrustworthy who have been black listed by the social credit system. There are so many reasons to give the CCP the cold shoulder. It’s also fitting that this article comes out near the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Like another posted earlier though: easier said than done.

djklanac··on The Streets of San Francisco
The problem is pervasive, and speaking in noncommittal terms perpetuates passive acceptance. We can take action through our democratically elected representatives by re-opening mental health institutions and drug rehab centers. And we can enable law enforcement to lock up violent offenders with the assurance that the defendants will be given due process instead of being released without charges.
djklanac··on Dropbox no longer follows symlinks to items outside of your Dropbox account
Primary reason for me to pay for Dropbox is symlinked files that act as a backup and remote file access.
djklanac··on I’m 14, and I quit social media after discovering what was posted about me
Thought provoking but ultimately melodramatic. Your family posted the equivalent of your baby book online. There are far worse things. You’ll be fine.
djklanac··on Ask HN: How to be productive with big existing code base
Has anybody tried software intelligence tools? Seeing the architectural components and control flow of the code seems like a quick way to document the codebase and figure out which “clusters” to study. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_intelligence
djklanac··on React.js cheatsheet
One of my favorites:

spread operator shorthand for passing component props.

Suppose: const now = moment()

Then, you can pass it down to a component like this:

<TimeInput {...{now}} />

Which is equivalent to

<TimeInput now={now} />

With many props, it becomes easier on the eyes and differentiates from passing event handlers e.g. <TimeInput {...{now}} myHandler={this.handleKeyPress} />

djklanac··on Breakfast Skipping Is Associated with Increased Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
I was unsuccessful in finding articles that offered a counterpoint. I’m curious if anyone in the HN community has insight to share given the preponderance of studies arguing the opposite of this meta study’s conclusion.

djklanac··on Slate JS – A customizable framework for building rich text editors
I used SlateJS a year ago and couldn’t be more impressed. It struck a great balance with minimalist architecture while also providing the React building blocks I’d rather use than create myself.
djklanac··on The Last Slave Ship Survivor Gave an Interview in the 1930s
I’m surprised this comment was downvoted. Blending of cultures is an amazing thing and what we all should strive toward.
djklanac··on Why Personas Fail
Why not create profiles of real customer contacts? Use their own words for how they describe themselves and their goals.
djklanac··on Facebook is the Enemy Now
I have my concerns too about Facebook, but this is typical sensationalist journalism. If every statement weren’t hyperbolic I’d give it more credibility. Why are so many journalists so bad at their craft now? Read the NY Times, BBC or The Intercept and compare their professionalism to this article. They’ve become an anachronism in a sea of progressive blogger shit like HuffPo.
djklanac··on Mastering PostgreSQL in Application Development
Sweet. I'll give your book a read then. Gaining a more solid SQL foundation to avoid LOOP in the first place is what I need.
djklanac··on Mastering PostgreSQL in Application Development
I didn't see any reference to PL/pgSQL in the table of contents. Does your book go into common strategies with stored procedures (e.g. When to LOOP to build a temp table vs. using table joins)?
djklanac··on Why we’re betting against real-time team messaging
I need to give this another look, but isn't that what a Google Group provides?
djklanac··on Theresa May to create new internet controlled and regulated by government
US citizens should contact their representatives to indicate that this is not ok:

Facebook.com/townhall

If you'd like a bit of boilerplate, here's a message I sent to my senator in Georgia:

"Senator Perdue. I came across a troubling proposal by our U.K. allies to censor internet communications. This reminds me of our own net neutrality debate here in the US. What is your stance on regulating the internet?

For your reference: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/new...

I'm also open to any constructive comments that could make this message more effective.

This is awesome. Thanks for sharing this.

I've spent my career living in sales and engineering camps. I've managed whole sales organizations and written full applications from the ground up. I could not disagree more with the author that time estimates should be eliminated. The business does not exist without revenue, and revenue is less likely to be retained (customers) or acquired (new customers) when the business is unable to anticipate product delivery timelines. Think about all of the other business functions that key their todos and deadlines off of a product release. There is also the question of accountability. I'm intrinsically motivated to be productive, but even I value knowing if I am tracking well on a burn down chart. It gives me daily insight into whether or not I should communicate a need to trim scope or coordinate a deadline change with the other business functions if scope can't be trimmed. Kanban is awesome for bug fixes that are hard to anticipate, but any dev worth their salt should be able to offer a time estimate. If something happens, then communicate why the estimate has to change and keep incorporating the lessons learned from into future estimates.
djklanac··on U.S. life expectancy declines for the first time since 1993
The quality of available food in the US is a big part of the problem. A recent TED speaker postulates 74% of food in the average US grocery store is spiked with added sugar [1]. We also eat too few vegetables and too much meat in our diets. And those foods are often raised with harmful pesticides and hormones respectively.

I am a discerning shopper, avoid fast food and still get surprised by food that is not good for me. For instance, I put a tiny amount of unflavored, low-fat half & half in my coffee in the morning. I checked the label today and see that it contains corn syrup. In my head, it was just skim milk and cream. Silly me.
