djierardi··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Amen. One would hope that these companies, if they truly want to engage in scientific research, would pursue established routes in announcing results and having them validated/refereed independently. But no, this is PR. Its akin to former announcements of "cold fusion", until assessed and verified independently.

But its just PR so far. They haven't published a refereed science paper, in say Nature or Science. At this stage, its of little value to others until verified.

djierardi··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
The mathematicians seem justified: these companies are expending huge $$ for press-worthy claims but not engaging in the underlying research enterprise.

And, good lord, a SUBSCRIPTION to access its features. technically unnecessessary but yet another leech on my accessibility to data. (So many sites lately are behind paywalls. But you're receiving this data from my ring, WHY would I pay monthly for you to observe it and report?)
djierardi··on Giving up on smart rings
Yawn. Produce data to assess its value. I already check my blood pressure and heart rate daily, and when running. Heck, my watch (which I wear only at the gym) gives me feedback -- at the moment but not something I need to record. Why why why? Those exceptions are luxuries without obvious advantages.
djierardi··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
Yeah, anyone who doesn't yet have a Fields Medal, step back. Reassess.
djierardi··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
But computers have destroyed chess as a "sport". Nobody will sit to watch two chess programs compete, or analyze their tactics. Kinda like how now, anybody can construct a "game" over the weekend or a new song or a slop video. The value of each of these decreases to 0 as the slop overwhelms.

Trust. That's critical. Has Meta earned that?
