djflutt3rshy··on My dad got scammed for $3k worth of gift cards
A lot of failures here:

1) Caller-ID spoofing. It straight out should not be possible to spoof government phone numbers, 911, etc. My Android has "Scam Likely" show up when a scammer calls (I believe this is part of the STIR/SHAKEN protocol), this should be expedited, expanded, and improved upon.

2) Someone should not be able to buy $3000 of Target gift cards without doing a lot of explaining. Personal experience: The grocery store I go to; the registers will straight out refuse to ring up above $500 of gift cards, you have to use the Customer Service desk where their agents grill you (and I do mean grill you, their default mode seems to be "You're being scammed", especially if you're on the phone with someone).

3) If I buy gift cards in New York, there's zero reason someone in Bangalore, India should immediately be able to redeem those gift cards. Perhaps Target could should spend some of their data collection techniques on this instead of trying to figure out if your daughter is pregnant so they can send you maternity coupons.

4) Is there a reason unused gift cards bought within a certain amount of time shouldn't be refundable?

djflutt3rshy··on Google Chrome Incognito Mode Can Still Be Detected
>The last fit of madness will be a hidden session in Chrome browsing the web on your behalf, building up a bogus profile for the ad networks, and the ad networks trying to figure out if the clicks in your fake session are sufficiently human-like.

The first parts of this have already been tested by Mozilla: https://trackthis.link/

djflutt3rshy··on Ask HN: How can we destroy AMP?
Reduce the demand for it. Include easily accessible "article only" mode, make your site friendly to current Reader Modes for all major browsers. No obtrusive ads, no 500 trackers bogging down the browser. Quick loading. Just give us the info we need, nothing more. Just like ad blockers were a response to websites not respecting people's attention and safety, likewise AMP is a response to them not respecting people's time.
djflutt3rshy··on Researchers easily trick Cylance's AI Antivirus to think Malware is 'Goodware'
"That is, until they discovered that Cylance also had whitelisted certain families of executable files to avoid triggering false positives on legitimate software."

Surprised to see this way down in the article. No wonder that when they manually whitelisted false positives, researchers could just append code from those to malware and it'd rank it harmless. Isn't the proper answer to not have manual whitelisting of entire programs, but to train it better to exclude them?

djflutt3rshy··on YouTube bans content “showing users how to bypass secure computer systems”
Next up, banning video tutorials on how to use youtube-dl.
djflutt3rshy··on How e-commerce sites manipulate people into buying things
Why would the ThredUp example not fall under current regulations against false advertising? If I say "This dress was bought 4 minutes ago!" or "Hurry now! Only one left!", those statements are obviously either true or false.
djflutt3rshy··on What a deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg reveals about how we're manipulated
People trusted the news a lot more when it was 3 TV channels, the NYT, and your local newspaper. So maybe yes, it is time to do that.
djflutt3rshy··on The Making of a YouTube Radical
As a left leaning person, absolutely! I viewed a few of hbomberguy's tamer videos, next thing you know I've got videos with commenters suggesting we bust out the guillotines. But hey, thats what gets the eyeballs and the ad revenue flowing!
djflutt3rshy··on The Making of a YouTube Radical
A far cry from the conservatives of my time, hence the "alt" label. As the article mentions, how much discussion of a balanced budget is there in any of these videos? Do you think someone like former Senator McCain or Romney would be watching these? It's all about race and sex and identity issues.
djflutt3rshy··on The Making of a YouTube Radical
So long as advertising revenue rules everything around me, I don't see this problem going away. Whether it's addictive right-wing videos or addictive left-wing videos, websites like YouTube will always prioritize "engagement" and adviews over safe and neutral and boring and reliable. Good times...

Just because someone, either by choice or necessity (have you tried to stop using all ad-supported resources? You've practically gotta be a hermit) participates in something they find morally wrong, doesn't cease to make it morally wrong.

djflutt3rshy··on Chrome extension manifest v3 proposal: comment from uBlock Origin author
How trustworthy are they? I feel very iffy about sending my DNS queries to some random company in Moscow.
djflutt3rshy··on Chrome extension manifest v3 proposal: comment from uBlock Origin author
True, but a lot of people who don't, get their browsers installed or recommended to them by people who do.
djflutt3rshy··on Chrome extension manifest v3 proposal: comment from uBlock Origin author
I try my best to pay for ad-free/premium services whenever I can, but it's one thing for me to do so, and quite another for the billions of people significantly poorer than me. Making the Internet "pay for access" will cause those who make the least to suffer the most, and will accelerate Facebook's monopoly on being "The Internet" for people who have it included for free on their data plans. That said I agree: the vast majority of internet advertising is utter trash and should be much better regulated.

Reddit's rules against giving out personal information, so thousands of Redditors don't bombard the startup with angry comments or worse.
djflutt3rshy··on Facebook failed to block 20% of uploaded New Zealand shooter videos
Do you have any data supporting this assertion that access to and ability to freely communicate information leads to less radicalization, rather than more? I look at the Internet, and wherever there is no censorship, there is not wisdom; just hate and chaos.

4chan (and even more so, 8chan) are the pure essence of no censorship, yet everything from Holocaust denial to rampant racism and sexism thrive and fester and spread. The most persuasive ideas are those that are short, easy to digest, and blame someone who's not you for your misery. The truth, well, it can be messy and complicated, and I'm not sure you can get there without shutting down the puerile voices screaming memes of hatred.

djflutt3rshy··on Why can’t a bot tick the 'I'm not a robot' box?
The box has made browsing using TOR insufferable! It fusses and makes me click storefronts and traffic lights until I run out of patience and close out of whatever webpage I was trying to visit. I assume it has to do with a lack of Google cookies on the browser, essentially punishing me for trying to protect my privacy.

"It appears that your Add-on violates the Firefox Add-on Distribution Agreement and the Conditions of Use. Both prohibit Add-ons that violate the law. Your Add-on appears to be designed and promoted to allow users to circumvent paywalls, which is illegal.

djflutt3rshy··on Harvard’s Admissions Process, Once Secret, Is Unveiled in Federal Court
Why on God's green earth are we evaluating candidates to a major university based on how well they're "grappling with [their] sexual identity"?
djflutt3rshy··on Confessions of a Fake News Writer
I’d start with sites that don’t rely on advertising revenue to stay afloat. So probably subscription sites like the Economist and Wall Street Journal, and public news sources like NPR and PBS. Though for the latter there is the pressure of government to consider.
djflutt3rshy··on Docker cannot be downloaded without logging into Docker Store
Would it kill companies to be honest and upfront about these sorts of issues? I feel like "Hey, we're unable to pay our bills unless we can better monetize our product" comes across a lot more honest and trust-worthy than this "We're improving user experience! Trust us!" pride-and-accomplishment nonsense that everyone keeps regurgitating. We're not preschoolers, the Internet can spot marketing slogans a mile away.
djflutt3rshy··on Pre-sleep treatment with galantamine stimulates lucid dreaming
I am jealous! Pretty much any time I experience a nightmare, it's a dog biting me, or I'm being stabbed, or some wild animals are attacking me, and there's almost always vivid and terrible pain. It goes away the moment I wake up, but I cannot for the life of me control it in my dreams, regardless of if I'm lucid or not.

Interesting how we're all wired differently!
