Flashpoint Archive now has around 200K flash games that can be downloaded and ran locally. Im sure this is nothing compared to what used to exist but basically anything of note is in there
djaro··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
But Ukraine and Palestine are, which is where the crimes are being committed. When you enter a country, you are subject to their laws, not those from your own country.
djaro··on Socrates vs. the Written Word (2011)
Besides, any argument regarding new technologies that starts with "well Socrates was against writing..." is bad because the new technology is not writing. Even if Socrates didn't have any real arguments and was simply hating "because it's new", that would have no connection to whatever technology you're making now. People have hated both good and bad developments. People have hyped both good and bad developments. Pointing at Socrates and saying "see, he was against writing" doesn't work because someone else can simply point at the steam-powered car or zeppelin or one of the countless other technologies that did end up going nowhere.

On a similar note, any argument along the lines of "well, the elderly have always thought the new generation was getting worse, just look at Socrates saying the youths have no manners" or something. Besides the fact that Athens did fall and lose its entire overseas empire right around when Socrates was old, and he thus may have had a point, it's also just... possible for things to get better or worse? New generations are growing up under completely different circumstances with different technologies, of course Gen Z and Gen Alpha will be doing better in some areas and worse in others than Gen X or Millenials.

Both arguments fall into the fallacy of "you are criticizing A. But 100 years ago, someone criticized B, and they were wrong" which is just like... yeah A and B are not the same thing. Young people 2000 years ago are not young people now, even if Socrates 2000 years ago was wrong in criticizing the youth of Ancient Athens, that has no bearing on modern arguments. Even if Socrates was wrong in criticizing reading, that has nothing to do with modern criticisms of social media, crypto, AI, video games, etc.

djaro··on Bend – a language that blocks AI mistakes via proof and runs on GPUs
My main experience with the demo on the site is that I asked it to add a simple feature which would not even necessarily let you win the game, and it would spend >100k tokens in a loop of "laws broken" until maybe adding it, maybe not. After burning half a million tokens just to add an extra line of walls so that teleporting 2 squares up wouldn't let me win, my API key got rate limited and broke the loop.

On top of that, the solutions feel like patchwork. I asked it to let spacebar flip the board horizontally, and it responded by making the board completely symmetrical including 2 flag poles. At some point it just has to say "this isn't possible without breaking the laws" or think of an actual workaround, because if I was making a game, suddenly having 2 finishes would be unwanted behavior for me.

djaro··on OpenJev
Unsolvable problem.

Why was the aesthetic standard to be pale when workers worked the fields and royals were inside, but tan when workers moved into factories and only the rich could afford to go on a beach vacation?

Aesthetic standards are formed by association. Its why sites that are "well designed" but obviously just use a squarespace or wix template feel so cheap. Why millenial flannel went from hip to standard to outdated. Why purple was the color of royalty before we could synthesize the pigment.

Having good design is about associations. Whatever design LLMs will default to, it will always feel cheap because we will learn over time that that design means cheap. Having good taste is about being ahead of the curve. An LLM cant be ahead of the curve because then that becomes the standard, and theres a new ahead.

You can use LLMs to make novel looking websites by carefully telling it to add certain details, use certain elementd, etc. At that point youve looped back to being a graphic designer.

djaro··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
My touchpad doesn't work anymore. Why is it so difficult to connect a bluetooth mouse without a mouse? The "mouse detected, want to connect?" notification shows up ON THE SCREEN but I need to enter a bunch of shortcuts and navigate through multiple items just to be able to click yes.
djaro··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
My touchpad broke and I couldnt download the touchpad driver to fix it on the spot because there was no way to get to the download button with tab and enter, you had to click it.
djaro··on Autism mutations drive neurodevelopmental pathology
Autism is a disability. The function of the brain to normally process social cues is broken. In the same way someone who is blind has broken vision, someone in a wheelchair has broken legs, and someone with ADHD has broken executive function.

This isnt a moral judgement, theres nothing wrong with being disabled, but it remaims a disability that many people struggle due to.

djaro··on Autism mutations drive neurodevelopmental pathology
I mean, it's classified as a disability for a good reason.

I would guess that even if this platform has more autistic people due to being tech focused, autistic tech nerds and programmers are on the extreme end of high-functioning. Many low-functioning autistic people will never be able to have a job or live by themselves.

This is the same issue as high-functioning ADHD'ers saying "ADHD is my superpower", meanwhile people with severe ADHD do significantly worse than the general population in basically any metric, up to having a lower life expectancy.

This isnt to say its morally bad, theres nothing wrong with being autistic or having ADHD, but it is a disability. Just like someone who's deaf can live a totally happy life but still be disabled because they are not able to hear, someone with autism is disabled because they are not able to process social cues at the same speed, even if they are a great person and have a good life.

djaro··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
This is also why apps like Duolingo don't work for most users. They want to turn language learning into a fun, effortless game but effortless is fundamentally incompatible with learning.

Learning is uncomfortable. Reading a difficult (for you) text in a language you don't understand is exhausting and confusing. But that is where improvement happens.

Its even worse since Duolingo added a life system (not sure if they still use it), where you were only allowed to make 3 mistakes before having to recharge your energy. If you get everything right, you are not learning, you SHOULD be making mistakes constantly. That shows you're actually being challenged.

djaro··on Devtools must be open source
It is crazy how much of the tech industry - one of the biggest industries on Earth - still uses so much volunteer labor. Its crazy because in no other industry would people expect you to not only give away your stuff for free but do it in such a way anyone else can copy your stuff and edit it.
djaro··on How to Exist
Too much self-awareness can cause you to become blind to the experiential part of life.

Like, when you're at a party, not having fun, but instead thinking: "I am drinking alcohol to lower my social inhibitions at the cost of worse sleep and long-term health benefits, because I think in the long run the possible connections made here and the subsequent rise in social status will be worth it"

djaro··on How to Exist
It's interesting how this compulsion to work spread even to people that don't need to do it. Just look at how many modern-day billionaires are still flaunting how many hours they work each week. Up to the modern era, work was not seen as an inherent virtue, and even something to be avoided. Even well into the modern era, Teddy Roosevelt went on multi day camping trips completely unconnected from civilization. Just imagine a world leader wanting to do that now.
djaro··on Stop Killing the Internet: No Digital ID and No Age Verification
I hope they kill the internet. Mandatory ID scans might be the last push I need to stop wasting my time on Reddit.
djaro··on Kill The Cookie Banner
Because children shouldn't be the ones paying for the crime of having bad parents. Children should be safe regardless of what the parents do, because they're independent people and not property.
djaro··on Kill The Cookie Banner
Because we live in a society and trillion dollar companies exploiting children for the crime of having negligent parents is bad.

The aim here is to protect the children. "Just let parents protect them" doesn't work when there's millions of parents that won't care.

djaro··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
Maybe this is because video games can always add more features. Realistically, what useful feature could even be added to Word? I want to write text. It lets me write text. Program done. I dont see why Word would ever need an update other than maintenance or a security patch.
djaro··on OpenAI’s accidental attack against Hugging Face is science fiction that happened
Wouldnt this be countered by the opposing country running the same prompt on themselves first and fixing all the flaws? One country having this is a cyber superweapon but every country having it essentially solves cyber security.

djaro··on FAANG Simulator
The median household income in the US is like 83K, which means half of all households survive with less than that. And most households have two earners.

Even New York City has a median household income of ~80K. Half of all households in NYC survive on that.

djaro··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
If a native speaker didn't pass a C2 exam, it's not because they don't understand the language well enough, it's because they are bad at reading/writing as a skill and might make e.g. spelling mistakes.

Any native speaker will still be far beyond C2 when it comes to intuitively understanding a language and using it. No native speaker will ever fail the oral part of a C2 exam, unless they have to talk about a topic they don't know, which would be a case of a lack of knowledge, not a lack of language proficiency.

djaro··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
The thing that makes this illogical to me is that once you reach basic fluency, you stop needing to study since you will now be automatically improving your language skills every time you hold a conversation, read a newspaper, watch a television program, etc. It's genuinely just the relatively small initial hurdle towards ~B1 that is a slog, but after that, you never have to actively study again if you don't want to.
djaro··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
I would disagree about it not being "easy". Learning a language certainly takes time and effort, but the fact that even the dumbest people in society can speak fluently, that literal toddlers learn languages, shows that it's far from difficult.

It just requires turning your rational mind off, immersing yourself in the language and trusting things will work out, something which more rational/analytic people tend to struggle with. It's telling that children from non-English countries naturally become completely fluent in English by just playing video games and watching YouTube videos, while adults will struggle for years to reach conversational fluency in their second language.

djaro··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
Yeah, B1 is not even nearly fluent, on my B1 exam Spanish I had to roleplay with the examinator going to a store to return something after buying the wrong item. This is like, bare minimum of functioning.

I cannot imagine living in a country for over a year and not taking the effort to lesrn the language.

djaro··on A global workspace in language models
This is very obvious any time you try to create exhaustive lists of something.

For example, for every country in the world, I would recognize it and say, yeah, thats a country.

But if I had to write all ~200 countries into a list, I would probably miss quite a few.

Or, if you gave me names of all US presidents, I would for each of them go, oh yeah, thats a president. But ask me "name all the presidents", I wouldnt get further than 10.

djaro··on A global workspace in language models
Its very true for humans as well. For example, if you ask someone to "name 100 historical figures", they will have a very difficult time. But there are of course hundreds of historical figures people woukd recognize. People who manage to do this still tend to fall into sequences so, i.e., naming all the presidents of America or emperors of Rome. But the broader the category, the more difficult it is to come up with examples.
djaro··on PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform
The strongest endorsement for PeerTube is that it cannot sustain creators and thus will only either 1) freeboot off of platforms that do or 2) be flooded by low effort slop?
