Fight back against the white supremacists and neo-Nazis and racists and write nationalists, both in real life and online. You think they're ruining a website? They took control of the USA. The might take control of France. I can't imagine how tired you'll be of them after they've run the world into the ground.
diyorgasms··on The 14 Characteristics of Fascism (2003)
For far longer than that actually. Newt Gingrich (the one soon-to-be of the Trump administration) spent the 90s trying to defund public media as House Speaker.
diyorgasms··on Silicon Valley frets over foreign worker crackdown
No, while I suspect that many of the people who voted for Trump did so out of bigotry, some I assume are good people.

And the email did not say to resign if you supported Trump, it said to resign if you would engage in bigoted acts. "demeaning, insulting and ridiculing minorities, immigrants and the physically/mentally disabled" is how those acts were specified. And frankly, if that's how you're going to behave, then you have no place in any organization.

diyorgasms··on Silicon Valley frets over foreign worker crackdown
Wait, I fail to understand how refusing to hire or associate with bigots is an assault on democracy.

It seems to me this is the free market in action. Your labor is worth so much less as a bigot that you are unemployable. Tough shit.

Unless you want to add political beliefs to "protected classes". But it was my understanding that conservatives don't think the government should be involved in mandating voluntary associations.

diyorgasms··on President Obama Should Shut Down the NSA’s Mass Spying Before It’s Too Late
I think the majority doesn't think of this at all. And for many of us, it was never acceptable for Apple, Google, MS, the telecoms, or IoT products to do this either. That's why many of us use FOSS and encrypt everything and use VPNs to mitigate these companies' access to our data.

You, like many others in this thread, are trying to point out hypocrisy and ideological inconsistencies where there are none, as some sort of "gotcha" so you can justify the belief that your political opponents are somehow worse than you are.

diyorgasms··on President Obama Should Shut Down the NSA’s Mass Spying Before It’s Too Late
No, billionaires pouring money into politics is not a good thing, but it is the status quo. As long as it's the status quo, I'd like to see that money being used to oppose autocracy. But I'd be happier to see money out of politics entirely.

And I really don't think there's been a 180 on surveillance. I think the only people who were supporting the surveillance apparatus were the same people of an authoritarian bent who are now supporting Trump.

You are seeing ideological inconsistency where there is none in an effort to make your political opponents appear as hypocrites.

diyorgasms··on President Obama Should Shut Down the NSA’s Mass Spying Before It’s Too Late
Agreed, and I opposed the Bush expansion of executive powers and the Obama expansion of executive powers. Perhaps not everyone has been ideologically consistent throughout this process but there are those of us who have.

And as you have pointed out, the major difference is temperament. Obama has not exhibited a temperament that has led me to believe he would use these powers to round up run-of-the-mill opposition. Trump's opposition to protests and potential unwillingness to concede an electoral loss leads me to believe he would mobilize the executive apparatus into dictatorship, unlike Obama or Bush before him.

You can't possibly believe that. The only thing they listen to is money. We're just serfs.
diyorgasms··on Myron Ebell Takes On the E.P.A.
Frankly, we had the candidate to address this. Taxpayer-funded education would have allowed these otherwise useless people to gain useful skills.

I fear from now until the world becomes uninhabitable through climate change that these useless people will remain useless and keep voting in fascists and ultranationalists that will quite literally destroy the planet out of spite for the "elite" who were lucky and skilled enough to be useful to society.

diyorgasms··on President Obama Should Shut Down the NSA’s Mass Spying Before It’s Too Late
I think this might have been a hypothetical question on your part, but one name does stand out to me, and that's Tim Cook.

Consider that Trump was openly hostile toward Apple on the campaign trail, and that Tim Cook himself is gay, and the GOP establishment wants to roll back protections for LGBT+ individuals.

And consider Apple's vast war chest, which could really make a difference assuming Citizens United isn't overturned.

diyorgasms··on President Obama Should Shut Down the NSA’s Mass Spying Before It’s Too Late
This is absolutely true, but let us remember that the creepiest pervasive surveillance entity in SV is probably Palantir. I am sure that Obama did not give Peter Thiel warm fuzzies (based on his position on the Trump transition team) and yet they showed no sign of abatement during Obama's presidency.

I think it is foolish to think all of SV are allies of the people.

diyorgasms··on President Obama Should Shut Down the NSA’s Mass Spying Before It’s Too Late
It was never acceptable to many of us. But the threat of unbridled autocracy was less present under Obama than it will be under Trump, for the reasons stated in the article. It is possible to oppose these programs with some but not utmost urgency, and then be catapulted into utmost urgency by an event such as a minority of the voters electing a fascist.
diyorgasms··on Is democracy a failure? (1861)
The police act almost as an occupying force in some communities. It does not surprise me in the few instances where they are resisted like they are an occupying force.
diyorgasms··on The People's Code
I'm not sure if this it's a popular decision, but I don't really think the private sector should be innovating with our electoral system. Integrity is of utmost importance, and voting machines have been proven vulnerable in the past. I don't think the private sector has appropriate motivation to really get voting right.

Two weeks is the blink of an eye as far as politics goes. This is going to be years, if not decades, in the making.
diyorgasms··on If elected, Clinton would support an “Encryption Commission” to help feds
It seems you are intent on using the term "libel" which carries a very specific and technical meaning. As best as I can parse, you mean to say they chose a deliberately unflattering picture. I suppose I understand what you are going for, but you are not doing yourself any favors by using a term that has a very specific meaning in a non-standard manner and expecting people to understand that you are using that word in a non-standard manner.
diyorgasms··on If elected, Clinton would support an “Encryption Commission” to help feds
>I consider anything that makes a candidate look confused or stupid or ineffective politically loaded, damaging to reputation (in the context of an election) and therefore libelous.

The you are clearly misinformed as to the nature, facts, and purpose of libel law, and it would be a mistake for anyone to believe what you have to say on the matter.

Using an unflattering picture or depiction cannot be libel. Making a false statements (an in the case of public figures, such as presidential candidates) those statements must be made with "actual malice" or be published with a reckless disregard for the truth. N.B. I am not a lawyer.

diyorgasms··on Small Indiana county sends more people to prison than San Francisco
I don't disagree with you that Democrats pushed some of these bad laws. I just disagree with the characterization of Democrats as not-conservative, especially during and after the Reagan years. Certainly there are some Democrats who are not conservative, but as an aggregate I would consider the Democrats to be a center-right or simply right party.
diyorgasms··on Small Indiana county sends more people to prison than San Francisco
"Tough on crime" has always been incredibly popular. But Nixon was the "law and order" candidate. Reagan was the "tough on crime" guy. Center-right Bill Clinton continued and expanded Reagan's policies. So yeah, there's a lot of blame to go around. But I think you're being disingenuous if you think liberals support mass incarceration policies to the same extent that conservatives do. I don't think urban liberals are the ones clamoring for harsher law enforcement.
diyorgasms··on Small Indiana county sends more people to prison than San Francisco
So the new face of mass incarceration is white rural conservatives, the same demographic that is largely responsible for the "tough on crime" push that led to disproportionate incarceration of poor people of color. Now that their fortunes are shifting, I wonder if the rural white conservatives will still be so gung-ho for harsh criminal penalties.
diyorgasms··on Transmission BitTorrent Client OSX/Keydnap Malware Incident Q+A
I've been using rtorrent for years and I wouldn't ever suggest anything else. It's just so damn simple and reliable. I love the concept of watch directories too. Upload a torrent file to a specific directory, and the data will be downloaded to a specific directory. You can have multiple watch directories for different types of data.
diyorgasms··on ITT is no longer allowed to enroll students who rely on federal loans and grants
I remember 15 years ago or thereabout and ITT Tech was advertising on daytime television. When was the last time a reputable institution of higher learning had a television advertisement strategy, let alone on daytime television. Their model has been predatory since day 1, and it wasn't too hard to see through it.
diyorgasms··on ITT is no longer allowed to enroll students who rely on federal loans and grants
Degrees from these sorts of institutions are already arguably a black mark. I've seen this come up a few times in /r/sysadmin, and to some people, attending a school like ITT displays a shocking inability to do even the most cursory research before making a huge life decision. Fair or not, you can be almost certain you are not being considered for some positions because you attended ITT.
