My passphrase is "the best place to fire a mortar launcher at the white house would be from the roof of the rockefeller hewitt building because of minimal security and you'd have a clear line of sight to the president's bedroom".

Arc for windows is in private beta. I don’t know if they have a Linux version in the cards.
dissident_coder··on Visualizing fighting game mechanics (2020)
I highly recommend the tutorials in Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1 (the time travelling reboot/sequel to 11). They do a really good job of teaching intermediate/advanced mechanics in a way that are pretty straightforward and understandble. I never understood whate "frame traps" or "plus/minus on block" meant until I did the tutorials for MK11 and I've been (casually) playing fighting games since Street Fighter 2.

The World Tour mode in Street Fighter 6 also starts you off by easing you into the mechanics, giving you mini missions where you get to practice specific mechanics "safely". The dynamic controls which massively simplify inputs is also a godsend for people who are intimidated by quarter circle inputs and the like.

this is something that I would categorize under "horrific"
dissident_coder··on The whale fact chapters in Moby-Dick are among the most memorable
It’s been over 20 years since I’ve read the book, but it really struck a chord with me as a teenager. I choose it for a book report assignment, my English teacher advised against it but I managed to convince her I was up to the challenge. Ended up getting an A and loving the book. I took meticulous notes and spent weeks studying its intricacies.

I don’t remember now much except these long chapters of “useless” whale facts. They stood out then and were so memorable I still vaguely remember them the most today. Just like how Tolkien could diverge from the story to tell the history of a single tree for a dozen pages. I “accidentally” read The Lord of The Rings because the French translations of the books had cool covers, and I had no idea what they were and were way above my level at the time but I loved them also.

Mellville was on another level when it came to the world building in Moby Dick, even for such a self contained story it felt completely immersive and real.

I really should read it again one day.

Anthropic doesn't allow Canadians access to their AI services either. I haven't had the chance to check out if I can get access to Claude via Amazon Bedrock - but that might be an option. My company is already on AWS and currently they are thinking of dipping their toes into using AI for our software next year, so I might get to play around with it yet. It'll probably either be OpenAI integration directly, or going with something that's available as a hosted service on AWS.

OpenAI services are available in Canada but as an individual, $27/mo for ChatGPT Plus and then paying per use for the API is kinda a hard sell for me.

I'm needing a hardware refresh soon, so I think i'm just going to run the open source stuff locally once I get around to figuring out how to set that all up.

Unfortunately Google caved and are giving away 100 million dollars. I wish they had a spine like Meta. I generally despise both companies (Meta more than Google) but the enemy of my enemy can be my friend at arm's length.

dissident_coder··on YouTube doesn't want to take down scam ads
Fake Elon Musk crypto/investment scams are like 60% of the ads I get, it's atrocious. I report every single one but it's tireing...and YouTube wants me to disable my adblocker? F*ck you!

Or when the Israel/Hamas war broke out, the number of propaganda ads from Israel/the IDF was outright disturbing. Most of them spewing the nonsense of Israel being "the holy ones" and they are fighting the "evil animals". Just repugnant rhetoric.
