dismal2··on Tesla’s Betting You’ll Pay $9,000 for a Software Upgrade
Eh, I'd assume different pistons and camshafts, but googling doesn't return any definitive answers. Could be wrong. Maybe I'm giving BMW too much credit.
dismal2··on Tesla’s Betting You’ll Pay $9,000 for a Software Upgrade
this isn't true. you can barely get any additional power out of naturally aspirated engine with software tuning, and sure you can do this for a short while on turbo engines but good luck running it reliably without spending money on various other modifications like cooling, engine internals, etc. manufacturers tune for a combination of gas milage, longevity, and to meet emissions regulations.
dismal2··on Tesla’s Betting You’ll Pay $9,000 for a Software Upgrade
Is there supposed to be a /s at the end?

Isn't the price kind of arbitrary? Would you accept this with any other product? Like buying a cheaper house because some of the rooms are walled off, or a hard drive that has a few GB of unremovable data, until you pay more.

dismal2··on Tesla’s Betting You’ll Pay $9,000 for a Software Upgrade
this is very different, the closes comparison i could think of is bmw selling a 320i and 328i which both have basically the same engine running different amounts of turbo pressure, but EVEN THERE the engine internals have the be quite a bit different.

dismal2··on Unmasking the Men Behind Zero Hedge
The Fed, by it's own admission, saved the world from financial Armageddon during the last crisis by acting as a lender of last resort to many a large financial institutions. They also had private meetings with banks to try and stabilize the markets.

Whether they went too far with their monetary policy is something that we will only find out with time, but there is nothing conspiratorial here.

dismal2··on Unmasking the Men Behind Zero Hedge
What do you think about the rally now? I too have been following the site since it started. Around 2011 or so I realized I was missing the greatest rally, possibly ever, but I was an unemployed millennial with no money to invest.

In the past 2 years or so I'm finally on a good financial footing but I really think this monetary experiment is coming to an end and I dont think I'm thinking that only from reading doom media.

Hope I'm wrong, because another downturn would be bad for this country.

dismal2··on Unmasking the Men Behind Zero Hedge
I meant around the time of the flash crash and in them making hft more mainstream
dismal2··on Unmasking the Men Behind Zero Hedge
I think whether you like the site or not depends mostly on if you think there was a fundamental recovery after 2008 or just an asset bubble generated by extremely easy monetary policy around the world.

Only time will tell who's "right" in the end!

dismal2··on Why So Many Smart People Aren’t Happy
not that these jobs dont exist, but instead of 100,000 people doing this at inefficient mega corp, there are now 5,000 people doing this and achieving the same results in sv.
dismal2··on Why So Many Smart People Aren’t Happy
I'm under the impression that this type of work is going away, or isn't that what silicon valley is trying to disrupt?
dismal2··on Why So Many Smart People Aren’t Happy
thanks, that's sound advice
dismal2··on Why So Many Smart People Aren’t Happy
It's just so hard to believe the abundance view! I wish I could. Our economy simply does not reward people for being good or ok at things. You have to be amazing. So you are forced into competition simply to survive and pay for your existence.
dismal2··on Document 17 Declassified – 9/11 attackers may have had links to Saudi Arabia [pdf]
There is a fantastic Adam Curtis documentary about Saudi Arabia and Wahhabism called Bitter Lake.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitter_Lake_(film)

Due to various issues, you'll just have to find a way to watch it... (BBC iplayer blocked in us, copyright issues when posted on youtube, etc, etc, etc)

dismal2··on Silicon Valley's $585B Problem
the question is how much of the other stuff being built is built on top of the ad money pyramid. would cloud computing have grown as much without tons of apps and sites springing up that then try to acquire users via the main adverting channels? how many saas businesses are there catering to these types of cos that are basically unsustainable, but got funding which they primarily used in user acquisition efforts?

no worries the FED will do SOMETHING and save us, SOMEHOW. no moral hazard to see here.

more complex than that, if they foresee lower earnings, different types of expenditures, etc, etc, you'd need a professional accounting firm to calculate that for you

no, oil has been spiking up due to incessant rumors of production cuts. even though the latest talk about a production cut was a no go, oil spiked a bit earlier this week due to kuwaiti oil worker strike.

quote from zerohedge:

Instead of using the same tax rate as a year ago, when it had an effective
tax rate of 25.5%, this quarter the tax rate was down 7.1% to just 18.4%.
Had INTC used the historical tax rate, it would have, surprise, missed.

Worse, INTC just cut its outlook, predicting revenue of $13.5 billion,
plus or minus $500 million, for the Q2, about $700MM below consensus estimates.

Any ideas why this would be happening now? Just an excuse for the Saudis to sell their treasuries and fix their deficit?
dismal2··on A year after launch, it’s now clear that pretty much no one needs an Apple Watch
Ok, let's start at the beginning.

Electricity is an essential, safe, and cost effective means of lighting. Radio/TV is a great way of receiving information about the world around you. A computer is now an essential way to get things done in the modern world and to participate in the market economy. A smartphone is a portable computer, it lets you do (almost) all the things you can with a computer on the go. It is quickly becoming essential. People need these things.

An Apple watch is just a useless status symbol, like all watches this day in age.

yeah, I thought about this too and will take out the history feature. I originally put it there so the auto recommender wouldn't get stuck in loops, but kind of unnecessary with the new search.

thanks for using it! I want to add one more feature (user ability to lock a room so only they can submit and skip), and fix some stability problems, and then it will be "feature complete" in my mind. need to find the time, been busy...
