discordianfish··on Openbook social network
Today, everybody can build a social network. Apparently though building a social network that's actually used is quite hard and many failed. So I'd expect somebody who tries again to have some novel approach but it doesn't look like it. How does this compare to disapora or mastodon except the lack of federation?

I really wish them to succeed since I'd like to see somebody breaking the facebook monopoly, yet I'm quite sure this won't end any different than disapora, mastadon, app.net and the several ones I can't even remember anymore.

There is this common mistake of seeing these platforms as a technical challenge but in reality, unless you have a novel approach that people crave for, it's a lot of non-technical hustle.

discordianfish··on Blocked by JSConf.eu Twitter account
I think most conferences will do well without attendees who consider them 'manchilds and circus freaks'.

Calling a organizer that would get you banned too and I think that's perfectly fine. There is no reason to get personal.

discordianfish··on Discussion if Google Fonts is GDPR compliant
IANAL but I think you still need to sign a data processing agreement with them and have your users confirm that they'll have access to their data.
discordianfish··on It’s Impossible to Prove Your Laptop Hasn’t Been Hacked
My Linux laptop is fully encrypted and I’ve signed and enrolled my own secure boot keys. Just following best practices and now wondering where this leaves me vulnerable. I think it should prevent tampering with the bootloader but not sure about hdd/net Firmware etc.

Thanks, I've fixed the typos. Indeed not a native speaker, should have re-read it a few times more.
discordianfish··on We Open Source Everything
Hi,

I'm the guy behind latency.at. So far it's really just a little side project.

Since few people asked: I mainly open sourced it because I believe it's useful to have a complete, real life service as an example/inspiration.

discordianfish··on A fork on GitHub is no fork
This is also simply to their per private repo pricing model. You can fork private repos with a free account. I'd just ask github support about this particular issue and I'm pretty sure they'll can either make the repo open or at least make the code available to you somehow.
discordianfish··on EU wants to require platforms to filter uploaded content, including code
Free roaming and peace. The small things..
discordianfish··on Project Gutenberg blocks access from Germany
Because, unlike some frankly sometimes a bit ignorant view of especially Americans, Germany isn't the paradise of individual/customers rights paradise it's often portraied as. It fights companies like Google not because privacy and security concerns but protectionism and the public accepts that due to some reasonble concerns about privacy spiked with deeply entrenched anti-americanism. (For context: I'm German)
discordianfish··on Project Gutenberg blocks access from Germany
Btw, Waldorf Frommer is specialized in these questionable law suites. They built an business around sueing people for torrenting things.
discordianfish··on Rainbow Deployments with Kubernetes
Nice pattern! You could throw in a HPA to automatically scale deployments to zero that aren't in use.
discordianfish··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of releases/deployments of dozens micro-services?
Keep track as having a version controlled state of all revisions/versions deployed? That's something I would be interested in solutions to too, especially in a kubernetes environment with CI.

I could probably snapshot the kubernetes state to have an trail I can use to rollback to a point in time. Alternatively I thought about having CI updatemanifests in an integration repo and deploy from there, so that every change to the cluster is reflected by a commit in this repository.

discordianfish··on SoftBank Succeeds in Tender Offer for Large Stake in Uber
Maybe I’m alone but my initial reaction was: “oh 30% doesn’t sound that bad”.
discordianfish··on Magic Leap One
Probably a mix of specific taste and the abundance of alternatives to do. Tilt Brush and Google Earth is super fun, but it it wears off. And when it comes to games, there are only so many games I'm interested in. Most Vive games feel more like browser/mobile games to me than the epic PC games I love. That being said, I just realized that Fallout VR and LA Noire just got released. This is the kind of content I was waiting for and in the case of Magic Leap, it will also take time until somebody invests into building good content for it.
discordianfish··on Magic Leap One
I've got a HTC Vive and my expectations were really high due to all these great looking demos. In reality though, there is still today very few engaging content which leads to a lot disappointment. VR overpromised and maybe Magic Leap, while being bold in their initial vision, learned from this and is careful to increase hype before having actual good content. I mean, this doesn't seem to address end users yet.

A mechanical wallet would be awesome!
discordianfish··on Fox-IT hit by cyber attack
To me the biggest question is whether or not TLS was in place. That should prevent the attacker from intercepting the actual data without the victim noticing.
discordianfish··on DuckDuckGo XSS vulnerability
The problem is the XSS vulnerability. This means the attacker can run arbitrary JS on the site, which I assume is used in the second link to modify the form handlers to run the "This could have been a phishing page.". And yes, that could be used to send the credentials somewhere.

There isn't anything you can do to spot this. This is on DuckDuckGo to fix and they not responding to the report for such long time is irresponsible and not really excusable.

Surprised it runs well on my linux laptop - except that here I can't click the ? which worked fine on my iPhone.

You can use something like https://ngrok.com/ to expose a local SSH server.

discordianfish··on More Than a Million Pro-Repeal Net Neutrality Comments Were Likely Faked
I think the biggest misconception among net neutrality sceptics is the assumption that bandwidth in general is a limited resource: It's not. The problem with 'others slowing down the internet' is usually on the last mile and it's cable providers oversubscribing this shared medium.
discordianfish··on “I thought I could ship at least 700 units to stay in business”
This similar in in Germany: It's not "everything is company property" but you need to ask permission to do "work" outside your employement, need to disclose if you create/"invent" something and allow the company to aquire your invention. Frankly, no idea how/if that will be enforced but something along these lines were in most contracted I had and it always made me feel uncomfortable.
discordianfish··on Dell’s gamble on Linux laptops has paid off
I'm using a Dell simply because it's the only option beside Thinkpads that are 'known to work' on current linux distributions. For the Thinkpad I would have had to wait 3 weeks, which again was the only reason for the Dell.

Point is, nobody seems to care about linux desktop users for obvious reasons, being a niche in a shrinking market.

Couldn't you just use cookies to track which creator a user visits and how often? I doubt many people are willing to install a extension for that.
discordianfish··on Delphi buys self-driving car startup Nutonomy for $400M
Maybe because a acquisitions in this phase is rarely a success signal. It's hard to innovate now that they aren't independent anymore.
discordianfish··on Reusable and type-safe options for Go APIs
Why do you find this hackish? I find that pretty straight forward given the constraints. You might prefer a more expressive language but that comes at a cost.
discordianfish··on Volume Monitoring in Kubernetes with Prometheus
Hi, node exporter maintainer here.

Yes, running the node exporter in a container is still tricky which is why we recommend running it straight on the host. I like the nsenter idea, wondering if it could be integrated without shelling out but I think there were some inherit problems with Goroutines and nsenter preventing that. If your interested in exploring this, feel free to open an github issues. Even better though would be support of unisolated workloads in kubernetes, similar to rkt stage1.

I don't know the reasons for your lawyers, it's possible I miss something here but it looks to me like MIT+Patents-grant gives you more right and more protection.

Facebook can sue you anyway, no matter what the license is. The grant made it impossible for facebook to sue you unless you sue first. That's gone now.
