dillutedfixer··on Ask HN: Is Protonmail Down?
Yes, same here. Can't login via iOS app, Bridge, or web.
dillutedfixer··on Preserving Worlds: a travelogue through aging but beloved virtual worlds
Could be an interesting series. Love the throwback Web 1.0 styling.

Im a little surprised that WorldsAway wasn’t talked about! Maybe that game was more popular in my mind than it was in reality. From 15-18 I was on there constantly! I still remember getting a $400 phone bill because my compuserve dialup number was local long distance ;(

dillutedfixer··on Fujifilm becomes the latest victim of a network-crippling ransomware attack
"A more successful approach would be eliminating the ability for anyone in the world to extort money anonymously from companies. Because without the motivation, the blackmailers have no reason to blackmail you. "

While I agree in principal, that is quite a lofty goal. What are some of the ways you would suggest eliminating that ability?

dillutedfixer··on What's an SPF Record?
One of the most important things I learned about SPF records was that the entire record had to be under 256 bytes. We were sending out emails from multiple servers on one domain, and were having so many deliverability issues because the SPF record had too many entries in it and would be seen as invalid by some spam firewalls. Once I cleaned up the record and split some email out to subdomains our delivery rates went way up. But of course as others mentioned SPF is just the beginning. DKIM, DMARC, reverse records, etc are all very important as well.
dillutedfixer··on The Market for Discontinued Photographic Film
I work in a retail photography environment. The amount of 16-25 year olds who come in to buy film is astonishing. Many of them don't even know why they're shooting film. They need help loading their cameras and have no idea what to do with the film afterwards. They'll regale me with stories about how they got an amazing deal on a Canon AE-1 for $200. To me it's quite obviously an "in" thing to do with young people right now. I have to admit that it kind of makes me laugh, but overall I am happy that it's helping an element of an industry that I love stay viable.
dillutedfixer··on Del.icio.us
Awesome!! I hope they bring back that feature that would load a random bookmark. I used to discover so much weird and cool stuff on the internet that way, kinda like HN ;) Conversation starters for days. The Roy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm fanfic group was still by far the most “unique” thing I ever came across.
dillutedfixer··on Adobe to remove Flash Player from web site after December 2020
You make valid points. But for years malicious Flash applets were one of the primary ways malware was delivered over the web. For IT departments, unless a user absolutely needed it, it was removed from their system. There was a time where it seemed like there were new critical vulnerabilities in Flash every week, and it was a nightmare to keep up with. Security, or lack thereof, contributed greatly to its demise.
dillutedfixer··on Making a SNES game in 2020 using modern tools
Awesome. Simply awesome. Such a fun, interesting and refreshing read. I really needed to take my mind off the news for a while and this was perfect. Congratulations, this is an amazing project.
dillutedfixer··on I think my BBQ just offered to be my default browser?
It's the hottest new browser on the market.

I'm here all week.

dillutedfixer··on Should I Block Ads?
It really is jarring when you see your regularly visited websites without ad blocking. A news site that I look at has infinite scrolling ads of those "Dentists everywhere are furious about this trick" with a picture of an avocado boiling in water or something equally ridiculous. I realize that ad blocking does take money away from site operators, and I do pay for many of the news sites that I frequent. But honestly a site that is willing to blast me with ads about how I can cheat my insurance company with ONE SIMPLE TRICK doesn't deserve money from my clicks. And I do get that they often can't choose what ads are shown. Perhaps that's the bigger issue.

Edit: elaborated on my final point.

dillutedfixer··on Should I Block Ads?
This x10000.
dillutedfixer··on Reverse engineering the OP-1 drum patch
I think when it became part of MoMA's permanent collection it really solidified a special place for itself.

>>the most obvious one I can think of is customers either pretending they didn't break their device by modding it when they in fact did or not even pretending and instead trying to cancel the company for having this policy because they feel entitled to support even if they venture on their own path and are warned beforehand it's a territory outside official support.<<

That would be my guess. The device is $1300 now. If faced with losing that much money my guess is most people would try to return it to TE and say it just failed.

dillutedfixer··on Instagram no longer allows people without an account to view photos on computers
Well I spoke too soon. Initially I did see the controls pop up on the bottom, but I just resized my browser window, and now for the life of me cannot get them to show up again. Oh well. I'll keep messing with it.
dillutedfixer··on Instagram no longer allows people without an account to view photos on computers
Nice! That does work. Thanks for that.

I'm still a little baffled as to why they don't just allow that on the desktop site, though.

dillutedfixer··on Instagram no longer allows people without an account to view photos on computers
I begrudgingly started an insta a few days ago. I am a photographer and I have resisted for so long. But this isolation just made me want to stay connected to my classmates and other photographer friends.

I have to say, as a photo sharing platform, instagram is awful. Can't upload photos from desktop, no native iPad app (WTF?), and whatever compression they use to display my photos seems to really mess with the quality (not really noticeable from a phone, but from a desktop, yikes).

It's great to be able to keep up with people in a more meaningful way, and I did attend a pretty cool live IGTV session, but all in all I don't really like it.

And as others have mentioned, I think, you can just middle-click on a post to open it in a new tab and it wont ask for a login.

dillutedfixer··on The 2020 MacBook Air
Not the same. I added one of those to a 13" MBP I used to have. The protector alters the way you see the color on the screen, and adds a kind of weird pixelated look. As someone who does professional photo and video editing, that's a deal breaker. Not to mention how difficult they are to get on without bubbles or dust trapped underneath, and the fact that they just eventually start to peel off at the edges. There was a company in the bay area that used to swap out the glossy screens with a true matte display and a dark bezel, cant remember their name but once the retinas came out they stopped doing the swaps.
dillutedfixer··on The 2020 MacBook Air
I wish Apple would bring back a true anti-glare matte display option. I can't stand the reflectivity on any of their laptops despite their claim that it's "anti-glare." I love the macOS ecosystem, but I REALLY love the 100% Adobe matte 4k screen on my Dell Precision.
dillutedfixer··on Haiku Alpha 1: Rebirth of legend
I love booting Haiku up in a VM and spending an hour or two here or there pretending I’m one of the lucky few who got a Be Box in the 90s. I was a Super Nintendo and Windows PC clone kid, but I had Neo Geo and Be Box taste.
dillutedfixer··on Smart TVs like Samsung, LG and Roku are tracking everything
Nice, my smart TV has been peeping on me playing Peep Show on repeat.

More seriously, our privacy has been nullified by ferocious marketing and advertising tactics. Data collection has weaved its way into the design of most of the products we use, it was only a matter of time.

I know you can opt out of all of the collection on a Samsung. Just have to not agree to all of the Terms and Services. That being said, I've heavily isolated the Samsung in the house. It sits on its own VLAN that cant talk to anything else on the lan and use some heavy white/blacklisting at the DNS level to limit what it can get to on the internet. I'm sure it's still uploading something about me to somewhere though.

dillutedfixer··on When it comes to composition and length, passwords mostly don't matter
>> or get a special protected number?

That's an interesting point. Maybe an unlisted burner that you don't use for anything else could be your SMS backup number. At least that adds one small layer of security.

It's like being in an episode of The Wire just to stay semi-secure online ;-).

dillutedfixer··on When it comes to composition and length, passwords mostly don't matter
There are 2 other admins in our domain. We all get the same error. Through the Azure console I can disable MFA for other accounts, so even if I lost my app, one of the other 2 admins could just disable MFA until I re-enable it on another device.
dillutedfixer··on When it comes to composition and length, passwords mostly don't matter
When I uncheck Authentication phone I get a red error message: "Configure at least one phone so that if you lose the app you are not locked out of the account."

If You are able to remove it, I’m wondering if there is some sort of policy or limitation our VAR is adding to our instance.

edit - added quotes to the error message

dillutedfixer··on When it comes to composition and length, passwords mostly don't matter
In my opinion, Microsoft's implementation of MFA on Office 365 (at least our instance) is broken. SMS MFA is inadequate and should not be used, the SS7 network is apparently trivially hackable in some circles and text messages can be rerouted. So they want us to use MS Authenticator, great. However the 365 login screen always has the "Sign in another way" option in which I can just bypass the Authenticator app and use an SMS text. I cannot remove my mobile number from my profile to disable the option to SMS text because they are worried about me losing access to my app. I don't know if this is a limitation of Office 365 through our VAR or what, but it just seems pointless to offer an Authenticator app if there's an easy way to fall back to SMS and no way to disable SMS. If someone has my password and can reroute my text messages, a fancy shmancy Authenticator app is pointless. If this is not how it is for others with 365 I would love to know that, I hope it's not a limitation or policy put in place by our VAR.

> The fastest autofocus primes I see are f/2.8 and f/4, which are roughly equivalent in speed to an f/1.6 or f/2.3 respectively. <

Can you elaborate on that? What do you mean by "equivalent in speed?"

dillutedfixer··on OP-Z Synthesizer
I would call it limited. In fact, even Jesper Kouthoofd, the CEO of TE, would call it limited. From PUSH TURN MOVE (an amazing book on UI design in synthesizers) - "And to be creative, you often need many limitations. Suppose you have an endless canvas to work on - the result is that you can't even start."

I think the limitations of the OP-1 are one of its strengths. Anyone can dive into it and start making music. And once you really learn the device, you can do some really great stuff with it. I think any artist is made better by limitations. It's when creativity shines.

That being said, I think it's current price point is a bit high. I got mine for $899 which I thought was steep, I was literally the last order before they raised the price to $999, then $1099, and now $1299. It's wonderfully built, a lot of fun, but $1300 is a lot. I can't say that I would pay that much for it.

dillutedfixer··on The Newbie Photographer’s Survival Guide
This.

Tell a story with the photo. There are millions and millions of photos out there, but only YOU have your viewpoint. Only YOU have your intellect and knowledge. Tell a story, it will be unique and people might like it.

Also, Instagram is not the measure of success. I know a few photographers who are good, even excellent, and have more Instagram followers than Sebastião Salgado, who in my opinion is the best photographer walking the earth right now.

> there isn't the irrational exuberance that the dot com, housing, or bitcoin bubbles had.

I would counter that by saying that throwing money at companies that literally say they may never be profitable (Lyft, Uber), and valuing them at insanely high amounts is pretty irrational.
