The sanctions were to stop Iran from building a bomb.
the actual capabilities of creating one already existed and as you pointed out can be easily ramped up in relatively no time.

Just a couple google sources before the invasion put it at 69%, 57%, 58% join EU versus 21% wanting the opposite of an economic union with ussr countries.
IDK xtabs or if there is a poll with strong/lean scale, but a strong plurality above 50% is pretty big regardless see another example last link below showing decent majority strong yes with relatively small no.
Main point is that NATO wasn't even on the table for Ukraine.
The first invasion happened after the Ukrainian people chose a new government because Yanukovych refused to sign the EU trade agreement.
I think a lot of countries in their position (like finland) the citizens were rightly worried about poking the nuclear bear by trying to join NATO.
There are more than a few articles and polls out now showing the sentiment has changed now with this recent war.
Finland for example is now above 53% join nato for while only 28% against.
Another example of lopsided enthusiasm painting a different picture of support.

1: Democratically elected stretches reality towards the end. The end was not a free and fair democracy nor free and fair elections.
Yanukovych was an autocrat and stooge. copying many of the same tactics as his protector Putin to stay in power beyond public support: suppressing opposition, faking votes with international orgs deemed un true/not valid election, using his private military to intimidate and suppress.
The people of Ukraine WANT to join the EU and be a part of European trade. Perhaps not all but a vast majority.
That's the crux of Maidan.
Yanukovych said he would sign the economic agreement which had broad support across the country. But did a 180 and ran to Putin (literally and figuratively, he physically fled). If any country was holding a gun it was Russia.
2: It was not a coup. This was not a military take over, decapitation by a 3rd party nation, or middle of the night execution.
He was removed through an act of parliament after IMENSE popular opposition via democratic sentiment/uprising among the people.
Even if that act itself wasn't laid out exactly in their constitution, what came next were legitimate free and fair elections which is indisputable.
People and countries should be free to chart their own future.
To remove themselves from the foot of authoritarianism and to rewrite and reimagine their government towards Democracy, European trade, & freedom.
A bully autocrat & former controlling country shouldn't be allowed to shut down the will and future of tens of millions just because they have a larger army and threaten nuclear war.
Read an article from my state today about a local utility that was created specifically to get local control and more sustainable energy.
But their proposed large scale solar farm was denied a zoning change because some town thought it was bad idea to remove ( a tiny amount of ) farm land.
The util contractor even said they would still water the land (dumb this is a desert) and have sheep.

Insane to me.
Is there any proof that for profit incentives actually lower costs without effecting safety, reliability, and sustainability?
Texas stands out as proof it doesn't. And even when it's semi-regulated when the profit is fixed % it just incentivizes the wrong thing when we need to scale down/build more sustainable.
I wish it had lighting. The weather.gov lat/lon graphs has it I wonder if that is a free source or something better.
Snow depth too would be amazing
Firstly can't ignore the rise of putin and him gaining more power & popularity after similar attacks. He at least used to be broadly popular, even though he messes with the actual elections.
And a LOT of Russians support the war.
Here is a poll I put in another comment puts at 58% support. I read another I think from Navalny said 50% but I can't find it so grain of salt.
complicated given they only see lies on TV.
But at this point the conscript soldiers know what they are doing. A lot of Russians ARE connected to the West and know the truth.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/03/08/russia-publi...
But two things in response to this:
- While hard to know with certainty, there is strong evidence a plurality of Russians support the war. Caveat given what they are swayed by Putins' gov media lies.
I read 58% in this source and I can't find it but I think Navalny org said 50%. [1]
Furthermore yes while it seems young conscripts were sent into Ukraine at this point it would be very clear to those on the ground what they are doing. I get they are probably making calculations about punishment or even death for desertion. But they aren't ignorant at this point but active participants.
Russian civilians aren't close to wholly innocent.
- I'm afraid that targeted sanctions have not and will not work.
I'm not sure if punishing the population economically will cause regime change. I hope it will. They have to fight if they want it - yes I understand the deadly costs of that but it's a choice millions of people are making in Ukraine and have throughout history. One reason there is more sympathy than say Afghanistan.
Even if lowering life quality in Russia doesn't cause change, this is a response to obscene attacks; i think the sanctions are actually less than proportional/reciprocal. proportional would be 'kinetic' military but that's obviously super dangerous.
Should always remember humanitarian aid through.
Sadly this high road is being bombed in Ukraine right now (maternity ward is just another stressed expletive filled morning for me)

And yes it's not even that high relatively! I would love to see an analysis taking into account cost of global warming just that we are already feeling.
I read an article earlier today analyzing cost per mile driven in real dollars.
We're actually a good amount lower than 2007 recession. And way lower than 80s.
But people don't see that. They see $5 and $80 to fill up a giant pickup truck.
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-price-of-gasoline-isnt...
But even that example still mixes morals, values, & politics. Joe Biden values legal autonomy & access.
And it is a fundamental campaign issue. He would not win the Dem primary if he was against abortion. You can't un mix the two it's blurred.
It's what drives engagement & wins votes.
One side views abortion as a moral sin. The other thinks that access to healthcare is a value and have a moral obligation to fight for the rights of women.
There are a bunch of issues like that.
For me right now my LGBTQ community is being used by Republicans as an election issue. An example where one side thinks (or pretends to in order to win votes) that it's some political issue, while I and many others feel like it's a direct attack on our lives akin to racism & racist jim crow era laws.
But there's also a perverse incentive. Offensive capabilities hidden and not patched.
And there's also issues with responding on US soil or assets.
Like would it be legal for NSA to proactively go into Google's networks or some internet infrastructure device without permission or court order? Even to do something good?
I would love if we could use this crisis to get investment in renewables and EVs/batteries.
I could see Congress passing an emergency subsidy before the election if gas stays above $4 especially if it rises above $5. I would hope we can spend an equal amount or more for longer term 'green' investment, regardless of what happens.
IMHO we do need those high prices to discourage driving. It is after all probably closer to the true cost with externalities of global warming. Could spur more investment in renewables too if done right.
BUT would need to help lower earners during transition or will just get pummeled in the election and Republicans will do the opposite of what's needed on climate.
I personally think most equitable solution would probably be raise corporate rate back up a bit + on very high earners/get rid of some wealthy deductions.
Then do something akin to the child tax credit mailed out each month for maybe <50k households. An energy credit. Scale up slightly if have a bunch of kids.
But that doesn't have anything to do with constitutionally protecting 3rd party nations using platforms/speech for propaganda in our (or any other opposing) country.
Seems ridiculous on its face to try to confuse or equate the two and argue the point.
For sure on a rainbow table for something like cell phone. but i don't know why that would matter? Anyone can generate all the possible phone numbers.
The whole point is that it is matchable. Like if they already have my email then they know if it's a match, but if they don't have my email they don't know what the missing email is.
Like what's my email from this (without knowing my email) below: 2c03e4a168bed89f5208250cdefbe97d4d87ba7812df896311676acc2ddfcdb4
'offline conversion' still allows you to send in names, age, bday, gender, etc for matching, IP, UA.
Though now it's hashed before going to FB.
And you can pass almost whatever custom data you want in. So I can in my industry optimize for a long term political donor, or potentially an early vote. Or someone accidentally sends in 'this person bought hepatitis meds'
This still exists despite what someone below said, unless I'm totally missing or misunderstanding something.
However it is not as valuable, and shrinking audience able to do deliver to because of iOS restrictions. And likely with Chrome too eventually
FB used to have more detailed interest/demographic buckets to target that they supplied. Used to be able to type in basically anything from what someone likes ___ very niche page to engages liberal political. There are still interests but there are fewer of those 'sensitive' ones. Still lots of stuff like works at ___. of course age, gender, geo.
But more fine grained interest targeting seems like going away pretty soon it's just going to be broad demographics.
The ROI is just not as good without iOS fine grained targeting FB is having to do a bunch of tricks with AI/modeling to try and make it perform but it's not as good.
I'm for targeted advertising. I think what iOS is doing is uncompetitive and bad.
But I do think there should be some sensible regulation. Like no healthcare or sensitive topic data (LGBTQ, dating, etc).
** ADDITION sorry this is long but one additional thing I think people also confusing the ad product with the old FB api.
The old FB api was an absolute sieve you could get basically any data a person has on their profile and also their friend's data. This is what happened with Cambridge Analytics.
All that has been shut down even login with fb they are way more strict about actually testing sites etc
I doubt it's on FB during that period though?
I would guess though that a bunch of health tech sent (perhaps accidentally just not understanding) a bunch of patient data though. Seems they are the responsible party.
There's been other examples beyond FB of 'auto track' too. devs just don't know or forget to turn it off.
Not to mention for some reason at that time putting a FB like button on all the porn. Who clicks that?!?!
It looked exactly like this.
And it incites harm, which is one of the restrictions that can be placed on speech.
Yeah it's not like I have anyone to talk to lol I don't plan on chatting up a storm. I figured it is better than the crappy plastic hand crank radio thing I have and to me this is pretty long tail risk likely never be in that much of a bad situation.
Plus ham is interesting to me so who knows maybe in the future worth investing the time.
