dilemma··on The two questions I ask every interviewer
Using proxies for competence is a slippery slope towards misdirection and irrelevance - and as a result, incorrect hiring decisions.

In another thread today, someone mentioned they reject every CV that has two typos or more. It's a proxy, and it is irrelevant for the job.

Once you start going down the path of proxies, you add more and more far removed ones. To keep hiring performance high, resist adding the first proxy. Actually ask questions relevant to past work experience that maps to the actual job. Maybe do work samples.

To circle back to the two questions in the blog post, no interviewer can answer them because they use proxies too far removed.

dilemma··on Why Are Startup Founders So Bad at Changing Their Own Companies?
Everyone is bad at changing themselves. A company is a system where the individual parts are people. Systems are built with a purpose. Changing the system means changing the purpose, often requiring exchanging old parts for new and completely revamping the system.

Creating vision for this re-design requires distance which most CEOs don't have as they are too embroiled with the day to day maintenance of the existing system, by definition.

dilemma··on Tesla’s New Car Smell
There are two ways of doing production: large batches, like you describe, and TPS. It is counterintuitive but TPS makes small batch production more efficient and more cost effective than large batches because it looks at the production system as a whole. You may want to read up on it - Check out The Machine That Changed the World.
dilemma··on Tesla’s New Car Smell
It's getting less and less clear.
dilemma··on Tesla’s New Car Smell

dilemma··on Tesla’s New Car Smell
Work in process is extremely expensive and large batches are more expensive than just in time production. This is the core of TPS and its not disputed.

dilemma··on Tesla’s New Car Smell
Production issues in car manufacturing can be solved by adding more resources just like adding more programmers to a software project can. Nope, not at all.
