digsy··on Leaked SCOTUS Draft Opinion Suggests Imminent Overturn of Roe vs. Wade
> It makes an assumption that other people share your attitude about raising children who are not biologically your own. Many of us out there who realize that simply having shared biology may be the least important thing between a parent and a child.

No, it makes the argument that the people forcing women to give birth are not also willing to care for them.

And you didnt say that you personally would adopt all of these forced births so you made my point.

digsy··on Leaked SCOTUS Draft Opinion Suggests Imminent Overturn of Roe vs. Wade
Are you going to care for the unwanted babies that now get born? Are you going to pay for their upbringing?

I suspect not but you will happily force others to do just that.

digsy··on The Contractual Impossibility of Unwinding Disney’s Reedy Creek
>I think that there is a feeling that the other side is attempting to move policy forward

Which policy?

digsy··on Disney tells investors state can’t dissolve special district without paying debt
>should probably be migrated to fairer terms now.

Maybe so.

But this wasnt a re-negotiation. This was payback for Disney pausing donations to Republican politicians.

digsy··on Disney tells investors state can’t dissolve special district without paying debt
There are 1800+ special districts in Florida.

Special priviledges are hardly limited to Disney.

digsy··on The chaotic collapse of CNN+
I paid for it.

I figured I would get CNN light for $3 a month vs Sling for $30 (which I only use for CNN now).

>The average age of CNN watchers is over 60 years old, not exactly a prime streaming demographic.

Isnt it? Every 60 year old I know has some kind of streaming device and social media accounts.

digsy··on Sex and gender education banned for K-3 in Florida
The bill was written to ban discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity for any age - not just K-3.

> Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.

http://laws.flrules.org/2022/22

The rationale for the law is also seriously suspect - https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/06/politics/fact-check-desantis-...

Simply put, this law is a solution looking for a problem and being pushed by a politician seeking reelection and ultimately - the presidency.

digsy··on Plaid is an evil nightmare product from Security Hell
>the security flow for banks was already horrible

I'm curious why you would say that.

What flaws have you seen in currently banking systems?

digsy··on Fake vaccine cards are everywhere. It’s a public health nightmare
They were sold as >90% effective when introduced.

But it was made abundantly clear that the original vaccines were less effective against newer strains.

digsy··on Antiviral effect of high-dose ivermectin in adults with Covid-19
>Why would you be anything but positive about this news? Whose payroll you on buddy?

OP points out that more research is needed, which it is. And you accuse them of being a schill? Wow.

digsy··on Fleeing Venezuela
So sad that this site has gone the way of reddit.

I used to come here for tech discussions and maybe some startup insight.

Now every day there's a post that devolves into qanon, trumpists, leftists bickering.

I guess every site goes to the dogs eventually.

digsy··on Why are American workers becoming harder to find?
$10 an hour isnt a livable wage in the US.

Why would you advocate for people to become paupers?

digsy··on Estimation of total mortality due to COVID-19
A lot of people in Florida ignored the Governors advice and self-locked down. So there's no real way to know what the impact of lockdowns were in Florida.
digsy··on Estimation of total mortality due to COVID-19
> financial incentives nudge hospitals to assign coronavirus as a cause of death if you had it when you died, even if it wasn't what actually killed you.

This accusation of fraud and malpractice has been a common talking point amongst those seeking to downplay COVID.

But I've yet to see any evidence that its common or widespread.

digsy··on Stash is a Go app which organizes and serves your porn

digsy··on DEA to Return $43,000 It Seized without cause from Tampa Woman at Airport
They seized $4bn over 10 years - not per year.
digsy··on No evidence of sterilization of migrant Mexican women, says Mexican minister
I'd appreciate a ban on political posts here. The amount of schills and astroturfing is turning HN into any other social network.
digsy··on California imposing sweeping rollback of reopening plans amid case surges
>We keep hearing about how this trend will reverse soon, ("two weeks from now"), but that hasn't happened yet.

Deaths are down if you look at the US as a whole.

However, if you look at the state level its not always the same picture.

Florida's death toll is up from a 7-day rolling average of 51 in April (the peak of its first wave) to 71 as of yesterday.

digsy··on Forget Google, time to end the Visa-MasterCard duopoly
Are they?

Visa/Mastercard charge merchants 1-2% interchange fees for each transaction.

I'd guess that people putting $20k a month on their Visa (I know a few that do) are paying for themselves with the interchange fees.

digsy··on Why the US military usually punishes misconduct but police often close ranks
My experience of the non-US military is that soldiers have a lot more accountability.

You are told the rules, standards are high and you are held accountable by your peers and superiors. Infractions are punished and squads are self-policing as you can be punished if one of your squad is caught breaking the rules. IE people are always looking over your shoulder and you are looking over theirs.

And the US military seems very similar. Yes mistakes are made and crimes are committed but overall standards are high.

Most cops I see in the US operate on their own (so no squad policing) and standards dont seem to be very high compared to non-US cops I know.

digsy··on U.S. Stockpiled 63M Now-Useless Doses of Hydroxychloroquine
PPE, potential treatments, Ventilators have all been proven to work for their intended purposes. Thats why we stockpile them.

Stockpiling something in the hopes that it might help is a waste of resources.

digsy··on Supreme Court declines to hear cases over qualified immunity
>It's time for legislators to legislate. Many of our current problems can be traced back to our legislature failing to do anything.

Congress has sent 300+ bills to the Senate and McConnell wont even debate them.

Half the Legislature is doing something. The other half is stalling.

digsy··on How we scrape 300k prices per day from Google Flights
Unethical to build a business scraping data from a company that makes money scraping data?
digsy··on The average consumer loses over $150 a year renting a router from their ISP
I second this.

I had to reboot my ISPs hardware 1-2 times a month.

I bought my own and had to reboot it once in 12 months. The connection is slightly faster as well and much more consistent.

digsy··on Bank of America: 58,000 small businesses ask for $6B in loans since 9 a.m
>I can't see the upside in doing this through the banks other than to make it a logistical nightmare for small businesses - if anyone has thoughts otherwise I would really like to understand.

Financial Institutions are set up already to do Know Your Customer (to prevent fraud).

And they have systems/processes in place to file loans through E-Tran (needed to file a loan with the SBA).

You arent hearing back instantly because FIs are completely overloaded with this and modifying existing loans/mortgages for small businesses and customers.

digsy··on US now nation with most coronavirus cases
Its not even that in places. Some hospitals in Dallas will only test you if you are critical i.e. cannot breathe on your own.
digsy··on Companies fret as costs soar for software subscriptions (2019)
I have a spreadsheet at work that does this for manual tasks. It calculates minutes to perform the task X # employees X yearly frequency of task.

Once I've plugged in the values, I go back and ask if we really want to spend 30 hours a year updating intranet employee profiles or if we should use that time to fix some bugs or code a new feature.

Its quite effective to pushing back on unneeded tasks.

digsy··on CDC outlines what closing schools, businesses would look like in US pandemic
Water plants need people to run them. And power, which means power plants need people (or fuel trucks to refuel their generators if the power goes out).

If those people are sick, the water may stop flowing.

digsy··on Apple Pay on pace to account for 10% of global card transactions
Technology wise, Magic Bands are awesome.

You can pay with them in the parks (no fishing around for cash or your credit card), it links to your Disney accounts, you can use them as a ticket to get into the parks and it functions as your door key at Disney hotels and cruise ships.

And it all just works.

The amount of data they collect from this must be staggering.
