difosfor··on AMD's Zen 5 is a missed opportunity in messaging
As far as I understood the Ryzen 9000 CPUs were also disappointing in actual benchmarks at about the same performance for gaming as last generation for a much higher price. I've gone for a good old 7800X3D in a recent build.
difosfor··on Genie: Best AI Software Engineer
God I hate pages that hijack scrolling..
difosfor··on Using alternative browser engines in the European Union
OK, then Apple should also be transparent and show how they meet all of these requirements no? Actually this should probably be judged by an independent organization. Great idea Apple!

Kind of ironic that they are also requiring WPT compliance while they are the worst scoring major browser there.

difosfor··on Paper straws are often touted as alternative to plastic, but they're toxic
I recently got a bamboo straw in a drink and have to say that worked pretty well and can hopefully be made without pfas; just bamboo.
difosfor··on Dear Safari, Things I Hate About You
I'm in Europe but as far as I know we're still stuck with WebKit browsers here as well with no sign of any other browser engines being made available through any alternative app stores. I think Apple has made it theoreticallly possible, but practically impossible and some charges were made against them for it.
difosfor··on Show HN: I made a tool to HTTPS your localhost
Intriguing, but I think VS Code's built in GitHub tunneling support is enough for me.
difosfor··on Atlassian research highlights major disconnect between developers and leaders
Has anything about Jira improved lately? I hadn't noticed. Still frustratingly slow, overly complex and unoptimized for developer experience. Heck I still can't refresh the sprint board without it changing from under me because it forgets about all the custom filters I had to select to see the things relevant to me.
difosfor··on YouTube embeds are heavy and it’s fixable
Shouldn't class lty-playbtn be lyt-playbtn?
difosfor··on US Olympic and other teams will bring their own AC units to Paris
Yes, mostly by using insulating (double) glass to let warmth in in the form of light that then warms up the interior. Think greenhouses. Surround that with poorly insulated walls and limited ventilation and in cold weather they'll leak out heat while in warm weather they'll also heat up in the sun and radiate that in.
difosfor··on What happened to the artificial-intelligence revolution?
Still a bubble that will pop though. If only in the short term before things consolidate and mature as with so many other hypes.
difosfor··on The EU should be the heat-pump pioneer
An AC doesn't pump air but liquid; not water, but still, it's indirect as well.
difosfor··on I was at AMD in the mid-late 2000s helping design CPU/APU/GPUs
> I seriously wish Nvidia and AMD could merge now – a technology cross-licensing that takes advantages of each other’s fab capabilities is going to help a lot in bringing the cost of GPU cycles down much furthe.

Given Nvidia's track record I'd sooner imagine them just slacking off and overcharging more for lack of competition. I wish AMD would actually compete with them on GPUs (for graphics, not AI). Interestingly Intel seems to be trying to work up to that now.

difosfor··on Show HN: Scene-AI powered all-in-one web design workspace
This tool is not really relevant to my line of work, but I do wonder: Why is the AI (Muse) not named the same as the product (Scene)?
difosfor··on US Olympic and other teams will bring their own AC units to Paris
I'm not saying it's as hot here as it is in Florida. But we've been breaking records left and right up to the point where I've purchased an AC (a crappy mobile one for lack of better options here for rented apartments) because we go through months every summer now where I can barely sleep without one anymore.

My point was that people often don't realize how humid it is here. You apparently also can't believe it. And how our buildings are not made to keep heat out, but rather in. So I expect many more ACs to be sold here as well in the coming years.

It might just be a month or two each year. And it might be worse for you. But it's also getting pretty bad here already thanks to climate change. And that's not going to improve anytime soon thanks to all of us.

difosfor··on US Olympic and other teams will bring their own AC units to Paris
So they basically have AC; they just don't allow you to set it below a certain temperature. And so lots of people will bring their own ACs to use besides the other one.

I think this will end up producing more CO2 in the end..

difosfor··on US Olympic and other teams will bring their own AC units to Paris
We have high humidity in Europe as well. For example the average here in the Netherlands is 77% where in Florida it's 75% based on a quick Google.
difosfor··on Ask HN: Best way to remove CO2 in a bedroom?
Periodically open your windows wide. If the CO2 quickly builds up though, you could perhaps just leave some windows cracked open. Or you should get some proper ventilation installed. If CO2 is high then other pollutants are likely also high.
difosfor··on Apple set to be first Big Tech group to face charges under EU digital law
I thought they were still no other browser engines available then WebKit (Safari)? You can only install other browsers, but they have to use Webkit under the hood. I think alternatives are now legally possible in the EU, but not a single browser developer has made theirs available that way because of the impossible restrictions around it.
difosfor··on Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) Phishing
I think you could do the same in native apps? So yeah, not much you can do about uncareful users. I suppose you could use something like an App store to provide some checks and a little more security. But then you're likely to run into monopolies again..
difosfor··on Firefox 127
They still haven't finished WebCodecs support unfortunately
difosfor··on Show HN: I created this land use visualisation for the Netherlands
Pretty much all of the food for our cattle is imported, I.e soy from Brasil etc. Capitalism combined with a lack of environmental taxes results in some crazy wasteful situations like this. It also results in the related cattle food etc industries subsidizing political parties and thus manipulating our government to let it keep on going and duck any responsibilities, like we have to the EU, that would risk stopping it.
difosfor··on What We're Working on in Firefox
I wish they'd finish up their webcodecs implementation. Even Safari at least supports VideoDecoder.
difosfor··on MSI Teases Z790 Project Zero Plus Motherboard with CAMM2 Memory Support
Yeah, was thinking the same! Could be interesting for SFF PCs especially if they will also make ITX boards with this.
difosfor··on A Theoretical "Case Against Education"
I think you basically remember what you think is important. And school can be a great place to teach you about important things you will probably not pick up at home. If only a fraction of that is permanently added to students lives, it's still a valuable exercise.

Of course education is not a constant thing, it keeps changing through time and it sounds like it could be improved.

Anyhow I'm personally very happy with the things I've learned in school and the friends I've made there. Sorry to hear about people apparently finding it completely useless.

difosfor··on $64B Gamble: SoftBank Arm Plan to Launch AI Chip in 2025
Yeah, perhaps better link straight to the source: https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technology/SoftBank-s-Arm-p...
difosfor··on Autopsy Cardiac Findings in 2 Adolescents Following Second Covid-19 Vaccine Dose
Didn't Covid also cause cytokine storms? Couldn't this have been caused by the disease instead of the vaccination?
difosfor··on Rust-Written Redox OS Gets USB Keyboards and Mice Working
A micro kernel you say? Interesting.. I remember in the past it was claimed that those would never be able to be as performant as macro kernels. But I also remember things like being able to install drivers without requiring a reboot and without needing to worry about it crashing your system either.

What do you you think is possible in a perfect operating system?

difosfor··on TikTok CEO expects to defeat US ban: 'We aren't going anywhere'
I think it's a good idea for (groups of) countries to require large foreign countries to create local daughter companies to service their citizens locally. This way you can enforce your (hopefully democratic and good) laws and protect your citizens from things like spying. It's somewhat ironic that the US is raising this issue though since they do the same themselves. As far as I know their secret services are allowed to spy without restraint on anybody but American citizens. Or they are doing so anyhow.
difosfor··on April 24 is JavaScript Naked Day – Browse the web without JavaScript
Ah, haha, CSS naked day was actually first? I do have to admit that most of what I do on the web is consume content and there most JS like analytics and ads is useless to me. So I guess I might actually try NoScript for a day after all.
difosfor··on Walmart joins other big retailers in scaling back on self-checkout
Self checkout is working just fine here in Amsterdam. Some theft issues, but manageable AFAIK.
