diegob··on Facebook considering $3-4Bn buyout of Skype
You're doing their work for them!
diegob··on Protip for salary seekers pt 2: Results from some mining of the H1-B database
Does this take into account other types of compensation like stock options? I've accepted a position as an H1-B and the salary I was offered is over 10% lower than what is listed in that data ... would it be prudent to bring it up?
diegob··on Protip for salary seekers pt 2: Results from some mining of the H1-B database
It might be average salary.
diegob··on Why isn't this UPS working?
looks like it's bricked.

on a serious note, i've heard of people doing this to store bought items and then returning them for a refund, is that common?

diegob··on Will this robot replace assembly line workers?
what about handmade crafts? there will still (always?) be a market for high-quality goods made by a person, even if machine made goods are of the same quality.
diegob··on Ivan Kaspersky kidnapped
This happens every day in mexico. Paying the ransom will unfortunately only validate the kidnapping "business model". There's no easy solution.
diegob··on The Economics of Dropbox
I think back-of-the-envelope will at least get you within an order of magnitude of the real numbers, which gives you a reasonable range to make assumptions.
diegob··on Kindle gets library book lending
I guess this is why the other book lending services got crushed ...
diegob··on Want to attract top tech talent? Offer telecommuting
what's an example of one of those "strong procedures" ?
diegob··on E la Carte: Table-Top Computers Bring Restaurants To The Future
I'd be surprised if this hasn't been done before, but I hope they get the execution right! Does anyone know how previous attempts have fared?
diegob··on The Interrobang, Part 2
I would love to see a scan of a document made with one of those typewriters with an interrobang!
diegob··on Can a complete novice become a golf pro with 10,000 hours of practice?
I thought the entire point was to become a PGA golfer ...
diegob··on In Norway, personal income is a matter of public record
"The children of people with low wages are being teased about it in the schools,"

Of course, the problem is that the information was made available, not that parents don't teach their kids not to tease ...

diegob··on How Dropbox sacrifices user privacy for cost savings
If you knew a target file's hash, it might be possible to modify the dropbox client to report that file as added, then dropbox would download that file onto your computer. Of course, 10^77 possible hashes makes it unlikely.
diegob··on When re-org pushes good people out; why Marissa Mayer will leave Google
". Her looks — blonde, Midwestern, unusually attractive for Silicon Valley — helped her win magazine covers."

Great job author, you've indirectly insulted all the women in silicon valley ...

diegob··on Ad supported kindle released
it would have to display a lot more ads ... like as you're reading ... maybe video ads w/sound ... and flashing lights while we're at it.
diegob··on Larry Page's first blunder
This is also known as a "hellban" http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hellban

I think it's a deliciously evil solution to spammers and trolls, as you've described.

diegob··on Inside the Open Compute Project Server
What would be the price tag for the construction of one of these datacenters? Also, how much more expensive (in operating costs) is a, say, 1.1 PUE datacenter compared to a 1.07 PUE?
diegob··on Google acquires ITA Software
Do you have a link? This seems interesting.
diegob··on Poll: If you have the ability, do you abstain from down voting?
There should be more like you.
diegob··on Why Can't Developers Estimate Time?
So things like prototyping, UML, use cases, and Agile were not a "serious attempt" to answer that? I think it's also unwise to tell your manager "it'll be done when it's done."
diegob··on Why Can't Developers Estimate Time?
What could replace it?
diegob··on Facebook open sources its servers and data centers
I'm sorry, but it seems like you're implying that search doesn't need users. Some of Google's ranking depends on analyzing search histories, so if you were the only user, the experience would be worse. That means that search is also about the users. Data center technology can benefit everybody, that's all I'm trying to say.
diegob··on Facebook open sources its servers and data centers
A proliferation of scalable data centers could also enable the next generation of social networking sites ... I don't see why it's limited to helping Google's competitors and not Facebook's.
diegob··on Polymaths No More?
I believe this problem is another good argument in favor of life extension research. What's going to happen in another 100 or 200 years, when every field has so much knowledge accumulated that it takes an entire lifetime to learn enough to contribute something new?
diegob··on +1’s: the right recommendations right when you want them—in your search results
I think it would be more useful to show +1's from people who have similar search histories to you. That way if you search a lot for Python libraries and +1 useful content, the next guy doing a search for that will get useful recommendations. I don't see how non-techie people in your social circle could contribute in that regard.
diegob··on Color ‘hack’ allows users to spy on anyone from anywhere
Just wait until this is used to put in picture ads or more subtle product placements everywhere ...
diegob··on Dear Google: please let me ban sites from results
Wouldn't implementing this feature be a tacit admission that there's a problem with search results?
diegob··on Firefox 4.0 Beta 7 - Super fluid, beats everyone on sunspider
Browsers keep improving JS speed, but is there an upper limit to how fast it can be? How far off is it from something like C ?
diegob··on Apple ditches XServe
Could this mean Apple won't be using XServe in their new datacenter? Maybe they're going to use cheap servers like everyone else.
