dhughes··on The greatest mystery of the Inca Empire was its strange economy (2012)
> skilled laborers paid more than unskilled, and supervisors paid more than workers. Men were paid slightly more than women, but female supervisors were paid more than the men working under them. Young women received maternity leave and were paid money for each child they had."

It makes sense, people were paid for their ability to add to society. Men paid more possibly due to their greater strength; carry more, build more faster and women for having children.

Is that Saturn in the upper left? I thought it was an icon or some artificial marking it's so stereotypically Saturn shaped I didn't think it was really Saturn.

dhughes··on Loneliness Is Deadly
Could it be culture?

I used to know a girl (surname Britz) from Porto Alegre and her family was of German descent and seemed like she had no Brazilian features from what I could see.

When I see pictures and video of people in Rio it's like different country.

dhughes··on Tesla Model X
I think the Tesla Model S looks similar to an old Dodge Intrepid.

I actually saw a Tesla Model S in person just yesterday as one drove by me going the other direction and it looks like the 2013 Intrepid, but it's nice. It's amazing the car could even be here since it was a tourist and 400 km/h away from home driving around the country-side.

dhughes··on Two Root Causes Of My Recent Depression
You didn't seem to grasp what nether wrote.

Contrasting normal everyday sadness versus clinical depression, requiring medication, is accurate.

dhughes··on 40 Days Without Booze
I rarely drink maybe one beer a month at my wildest but I live in a province of sport drinkers where weekdays but especially the weekend people drink until the pass out. Most events are attended by people who drank before arriving which is common but I mean they started drinking at 7am and the event is at 10pm.

Currently I a non-drinker have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease which sucks because it's insulting for me to have of all things what is considered a disease of heavy drinkers. It hurts, I mean my liver actually hurts and it's frightening to have a problem like this a damaged organ in my body. I'm not even fat my friends all ask how I keep so thin, I mean I'm 5'8" short for a guy and at my peak I was 180 pounds but you'd never know it by looking at me, but all my life up to a few years ago I was a consistent 150 pounds. I'm down to 165 pounds but still my doctor telling my my risk of heart attack and stroke is double due to a fatty liver, and this from a family of people who all die from a stroke or heart attack.

Your liver is precious! I don't think people realize how important it is they hear jokes about their liver when drinking to the point it's a joke or just noise more than advice. Then Tylenol the next day to fix their hangover which damages the liver even more.

You liver is the only organ which can regenerate but I would guess not from systemic damage only physical damage to specific defined areas.

Long live our livers!

Yeah I figured something like that.

I found this very detailed explanation, in a nutshell skin scatters light. https://www.imt.liu.se/edu/courses/TBMT36/pdf/blue.pdf

And this list of animals with actual blue blood, when its healthy and oxygenated not de-oxygenated: http://www.buzzfeed.com/donnad/10-animals-that-bleed-blue

dhughes··on Injectable oxygen keeps people alive without breathing
It's a good rule but in extreme cases I'm sure it can go either way such as free-divers who can hold their breath for five to ten minutes when diving but the world record is 22 minutes (when not diving).
dhughes··on Injectable oxygen keeps people alive without breathing
Or just someone without medical training going by what they see, I mean I look at my veins in my arms and they look blue but I have no idea why that is.
dhughes··on How Your Brain Becomes Addicted to Caffeine
Hello fellow GERD-er, I've never heard of the GERD diet my doctor just throws pills at me.

Exercise for sure, when I started shift work my gym trips started to suffer until a few years later I stopped going. I had gone to the gym since just after high school, almost 20 years, and biking in the summer.

My undiagnosed GERD grew worse a few years later but wasn't discovered until my dentist put two-and-two together about why my teeth were so sensitive. I unknowingly discovered it years earlier when having bad coughing fits I discovered an antacid helped calm my coughing.

Unfortunately the Prevacid I took (lansoprazole) I think was causing my terrible pain in my back in the morning. I was diagnosed with fatty liver which I am sure was caused by the Prevacid since it's the only drug I take, I don't drink, don't smoke, pretty much no drugs other than caffeine. Doctor put me on dexalansoprazole but that makes my guts hurt, then Tectra (pantoprazole magnesium) which also hurts.

So I'm back to square one which is I eat small meals and exercise like a normal human should be doing anyway :/

dhughes··on How Your Brain Becomes Addicted to Caffeine
I never used to drink coffee it made me feel very jittery and short of breath with just a sip, the guys where I worked as a kid (14) went on coffee runs, make that I went on coffee runs, and once I got a coffee and whoa jittery! Although a Lebanese store owner used to give make Lebanese coffee for me when I was a 14 or 15 plus some nice pistachio baklava, the coffee didn't bother me as much, weird.

Anyway 20 years later I started shift work and when installing equipment when the building I was working at was being built we had coffee breaks more to keep warm in an unheated concrete box during a Canadian spring. Now I like coffee (?) but most often it's a latte, cappuccino, espresso or some coffee flavoured drink but sometimes I get four shots of espresso.

Now I have GERD and caffeine is a trigger, at worst I am vomiting up stomach acid and my throat feels like there is a golfball stuck halfway down it. Yet I still drink coffee :(

dhughes··on Should you delete all emails you get while you are on holiday?
> Deleting email can sometimes be construed as destruction of evidence. And having email can sometimes win you court cases.

We have annual training on PIPA and FOI (Canada) and it's stressed any e-mail, written notes or any form of recording are fair game for anyone to request seeing. Even blank lines on a notepad should have a line and initialed, all pages should be numbered sequentially.

You can destroy notes and delete e-mail in fact it's probably a good idea since the less ammunition there is the safer you are.

dhughes··on Inside Caracas' Tower of David, the World's Tallest Slum
This place is a disaster waiting to happen.

On reddit someone from Caracas posted pictures of a different skyscraper on fire for days because the fire department didn't have the equipment to fight it. It was a business building but I can only imagine what would happen to a building full of families and no water for fire system sprinklers.

dhughes··on Volvo Gave Away the Most Important Design They Ever Patented
I remember as a kid in the 70s I saw a car on its roof with two maybe four people in it, this happened at a beach the car I think went too far to the right on a narrow lane and onto a dune then up a steep part of the dune causing the car to tip over.

The car was a purple 1970s muscle car with rear really wide slicks I think it was an AMC AMX.

I distinctly remember (I was probably about 5 to 7 years-old) the loose change on the inside of the roof I guess as a kid seeing quarters it may as well have been gold bars.

dhughes··on Report: TSA employee misconduct up 26% in 3 years
I've heard of some people who just take a starter pistol. I have no idea if that's the same thing or not I'm not in the US.
dhughes··on Cost of storing all human audio-visual experiences
I wanted to do something like that but it didn't work out very well. Mostly "everything" meant on my computer (audio files are massive!) or phone and I couldn't wear a video camera at work or scan every piece of paper I came into contact with.

But still I find it interesting it's almost possible.

dhughes··on Hyperloop lets you travel on a resonant acoustic wave?
I see now what I was reading wasn't HyperLoop it was a similar concept only using a vacuum tunnel.

http://www.gizmag.com/terraspan-vacuum-tube-train-supersonic...

>Safety is no small concern when you're talking about speeds in excess of 4,000 mph (6,437 km/h). After all, we've all seen the wreckage that can be caused in a 60 mph (96 km/h) car crash. The kinds of tube tracks we're talking about here would have to stretch thousands of miles in order to reach their optimum level of benefit – that's thousands of miles of safety risks. What happens when an earthquake strikes and cracks the pressure seal or destroys the tube completely? A vehicle traveling 4,000 mph is going to eat up some serious distance in an emergency stop situation.

dhughes··on Hyperloop lets you travel on a resonant acoustic wave?
6,437km/h (4,000mph) to zero is going to be one hell of a stop.
