dhughes··on London's first pay-per-minute cafe
Wouldn't making it by hand and throwing it in an oven be cheaper?

Although it depends on your oven if gas or electric, your time and effort, how much power a bread machine uses. The oven makes bread far better than a bread machine but a bread machine is better than mass produced, sliced, preservative laden white bread.

But you could time it so the bread is baked when the oven is used for cooking supper.

FYI /r/breadit

I do that anyway even for a single loaf of bread since I hate dry, stale bread. The freezer keeps it fresh and to make toast just throw the frozen slices into a toaster, no need to thaw first.

dhughes··on Childhood amnesia kicks in around age 7
We moved when I was three (42 years ago) and I have some memories or what I think are memories of just vagueness of being in the living room looking at the sun shining through the thin white curtains.

I remember the first year or two of school so that would be around age six. I remember suddenly realizing how to tell time, hands not digital, then looking up and the class was empty I was concentrating so hard I didn't realize everyone left.

My next oldest and clearest memories are when we went on a trip to the US and Ontario when I was seven. I remember that year because it's when Elvis died and we got lost in Niagara Falls, NY in a rundown neighbourhood seeing a man in curlers and a kid hiding in a garbage can.

dhughes··on The First Look at the New Oculus VR Prototype
I can't watch other people playing Xbox games like CoD it makes me feel sick, the motion is just too much for me to handle.

If I don't play for a few days I feel the same way when I am playing but I can power though that in about half an hour.

No surprise though since my flying career ended early when I couldn't hold my lunch, a (bumpy) hot humid day too much to eat and being nervous didn't end well.

dhughes··on How the Harper Government Committed a Knowledge Massacre
My theory is it's the Baby Boomers nearing or now in retirement who are concerned about crime, pension, maybe even concerned about immigrants and oddly immigrants tend to be more conservative.

I also think it's deceptive that they call themselves the Conservative party I bet older people may think they are the Progressive Conservatives but they are not it's two radically different political parties with similar names. I consider the current Conservative (Party of Canada) to be nothing more than the Reform Party reborn, for those who don't know Reform was like Canada's Tea Party.

The last election was supposed to change it all it seemed like everyone wasn't going to vote Conservative and there was even a massive push to get young people to vote which seemed to be working. Then the bottom fell out and the Conservatives were not just voted back in but a majority! I say it's the Boomers.

dhughes··on How printers and Photoshop detect and refuse to process images of currency
> It was stupid enough to accept a single sided copy.

DIP switches are set for various options one being accept face up (two-way), other options turn on or off acceptance of certain denomination bills and maintenance features such as calibration.

Even now modern acceptors allow this, although four-way acceptance is often preferred by the customer.

dhughes··on Michelangelo’s Handwritten 16th-Century Grocery List
Practice.

I used to be able to draw but then I got into photography but just briefly because along came computers. Although I had been drawing a lot and well since before school-age (5 years old) or so my mom says.

Now having been lazy I haven't drawn anything in almost two decades. If I had it and lost it I'm sure I, or anyone, could practice to learn again or as beginner to learn.

It's very zen to do you can't rush it's something you have to slow down to do and learn to love it. It's the only thing where I could really concentrate to the point I'd come out of it (trance?) hours later.

dhughes··on Architect's Dream House: Less Than 200 Square Feet
To be fair I should have wrote that sentence a bit clearer, phone + cold fingers (-15C) + damn autocorrect + impulsiveness + poor spelling (her siblings) don't work in my favour.
dhughes··on I worked on the US drone program. The public should know what really goes on
> The feed is so pixelated,...

I read that but farther down I read "but I watched parts of the conflict in great detail on a screen for days on end." seems to contradict. I understand what's meant, pixels and detail are different, but it's a poor choice of phrasing.

dhughes··on Reflected hidden faces in photographs revealed in pupil
> Although Jenkins did the study with a high-resolution (39 megapixels) Hasselblad camera,...

Medium format cameras have a much greater area sensor and probably overall better quality ($2,000 vs $20,000 or even $50,000 medium format camera) compared to a regular digital DSLR camera. Even a quick Google seemed to indicate photographers prefer the larger sensor size even if it has fewer pixels.

The article mentions "face images retrieved from eye reflections need not be of high quality in order to be identifiable" but even so there must be a massive difference in picture quality compared to a Hasselblad medium format camera sensor.

Still interesting though it's as if the goofy CSI or Blade Runner "Enhance!" has come true.

dhughes··on Will aluminum Ford F-150 be a rolling beer can?
On PBS where I saw a brief description of aluminum and how difficult it was to refine and even when abundant supplies were available it's a soft metal if not an alloyed with copper or other metals. And the alloy is still soft unless it's forged correctly it takes time and heat, or so the show indicated, it was quite interesting.

For all that work you'd think these days carbon fibre would be just as good, economically-wise.

dhughes··on New algorithm finds you, even in untagged photos
I wanted to create a website to do that, the Boston bombing was what made me think of using public images to see if I could match people. Or at the very least pick a date and a place and access the images in that area maybe see what's available via Google Maps.

And somebody made that damn robot fish too I had an idea for that back in the mid 90s :( /rant

dhughes··on Who's Selling Credit Cards From Target
> Two of the transactions were with Netflix to register new streaming accounts.

I had Netflix and one day noticed I was billed twice on my credit card for Netflix service, one was OK but the other just appeared on my bill.

I used the online chat to talk to a Netflix rep who seemed unimpressed and not the least bit concerned (no frowny emoticon). I asked how a new charge I didn't authorize could appear on my credit card, she had no idea and just kept repeating the company line their system is unable to credit me, so I said but somehow it can magically take double the money? Nice.

Anyway, no apology, no concern so no Netflix.

dhughes··on KeePassX 2.0 Alpha 5 released
I use KeePassDroi d (annoying text break) on Android, KeePassX on Mac and Linux but the Windows KeePass doesn't read the same file type as the others, unless I'm missing something? I want to use the same database file for all three OSesess.
dhughes··on A Solar Boom So Successful, It's Been Halted
It must be nice to have the option of solar panels, at present I have a metre of snow on my roof and that's on the south side.

And that's after I spent three hours shovelling off as much as I could before the ice storm hit us today.

It snow 15cm before the ice storm now I'm back to square one.

I'd like to have solar panels but I can't see how I could keep them from being covered in snow without shovelling them off off at least once per week Dec to Feb.

dhughes··on Navy sailors have radiation sickness after Japan rescue
You would think it would have been a good time to test or at least offer Ex-Rad to the sailors.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ex-Rad

"Ex-Rad (or Ex-RAD), also known by the code name ON 01210.Na, is a drug developed by Onconova Therapeutics and the U.S. Department of Defense.[1][2] This newly developed compound is said to be a potent radiation protection agent. Chemically, it is the sodium salt of 4-carboxystyryl-4-chlorobenzylsulfone.[3"

dhughes··on Is it bad practice to use your real name online?
It never used to be but it's rapidly getting to be, I use mine out of habit but I'm slowly changing to gibberish. Then again at some point it's changed from a "nickname" to "username" to "your real name".

In the olden days using numbers in a username was considered bad now it's becoming as necessarily as using a mix of characters in a password.
