dhruval··on Japan’s Temple-Builder Kongō Gumi, Has Survived Nearly 1,500 Years
The very old buildings the article talks about have long continuity but aren’t actually that old.

Article doesn’t seem to mention that Japanese temples are rebuilt periodically every 20-60 years.

Most construction businesses don’t have this recurring revenue model, tied to religious rebuilding.

dhruval··on OpenAI board reappoints Altman and adds three other directors
There is a non-0% chance. You are looking at scenarios where evolution has selected for competition rather than nurturing.

So as a counter example:

A mom is a super intelligence compared to a baby. And yet does the babies bidding doing her sense best to make sense of the baby low fidelity crying.

Intelligence in AI is even more alien, it doesn’t need to have any survival instinct of its own at all

dhruval··on A Canadian payroll dependency chart
Given that they had 75% inflation in the previous year, pegging salary to cost of living or providing that cost directly is not such a terrible idea.

The correct approach ofc would be to manage money supply responsibly but Argentina has failed to do that over and over.

dhruval··on Death by AI – a free Jackbox style party game. AI judges your plans to survive
I survived that prompt by writing something like…

“Amnesia does not affect involuntary processes like breathing. I later get my memory back”

dhruval··on Nepal bans TikTok and says it disrupts social harmony
Their current Prime Minister is from the Communist Party.

It used to be a Hindu monarchy but one of the princes did a murder suicide with the whole royal family around 2002 or so.

dhruval··on Threads, an Instagram app
I am willing to take the other side of this bet.

Not because I love twitter but rather because of the following

1.Network effects are just that powerful.

2. This looks like a group chat killer rather than a Twitter killer.

So I think the blue bird will go on to live a rather long life.

dhruval··on Threads, an Instagram app
Tried to install it but it was asking for too much irrelevant data so I decided not to.

Maybe I am not the avenge user I don’t need an IOS app for text, web is fine.

dhruval··on OpenAI has applied for “GPT” trademark with USPTO
Not a lawyer but as a consumer I find the name “Open AI” for a proprietary/ for profit company very misleading.

Are there any legal protections available to me in this regard?

dhruval··on EY gets banned from new audit business in Germany
Partners and managers review and sign off, but the people designing and doing the actual audit procedures are mostly in their 20s.
dhruval··on An ancient Indian Buddhist monk buried in Athens
For people that didn't make the connection, the inscription says "Zarmanochegas, of Barygaza" which is the greek name for Baruch. (an ancient port city in Western India)
dhruval··on Building a city optimized for bikes is a choice
One thing in favour of biking in Amsterdam and The Netherlands in general is the terrain is very flat as much of it is reclaimed land.
dhruval··on AWS will offer HF’s products to its customers and run its next LLM tool
LLMs are pretrained and then released for use.

So can have v1, v2 etc.

dhruval··on Japan PM’s solution to dire birthrate has already been rejected by young
Maybe social structure of some sort is responsible ? I am not sure just looking at the patterns I see in developed countries.
dhruval··on Japan PM’s solution to dire birthrate has already been rejected by young
Seems a bit extreme to have the government pay people to have kids on the level of a full time job when you consider that through most of human history people worked to support their kids / families and at much lower income levels.

Looking at Northern Europe seems their TFR is similar to the USA despite incentives.

dhruval··on Japan PM’s solution to dire birthrate has already been rejected by young
Haven’t seen any top down government interventions work at increasing TFR.

The only thing that seems to work is high religiosity.

dhruval··on Bypassing Gmail's spam filters with ChatGPT
ChatGPT also throttles the number of requests an hour and has various measures to prevent bots (though not that hard to bypass, easier to pay for API)
dhruval··on The quest for a family-friendly password manager
Spent years convincing my dad to switch over to LastPass family.

After the recent hack, I tried to get him to switch to keepass xc but that is proving to be too steep a hill to climb.

What is the best alternative to LastPass families? I don’t mind paying for a subscription etc .

dhruval··on Are super-rich people just better at making money?
1. Sure, I think there are degrees of consent

- people enthusiastically lining up to get the latest sneaker / iPhone.

- mildly enthusiastic grocery shopping.

- overpriced medical drugs due to a monopoly.

- taxation.

- outright theft at gunpoint

2. Insightful, thanks. I think one variable the model doesn’t account for is time (which is not multiplicative and scarce).

Money and power can be multiplicative so maybe most of us are playing the non-multiplicative game of spending our time to make money, while the rich are leveraged time to play multiplicative games where they spend money to make more money and happened to win a bunch of times.

dhruval··on Are super-rich people just better at making money?
This smells misleading / overly simplistic but I can’t quite quite put my finger on precisely why?

Some thoughts

- consensual trades are win win (you want a sandwich, I want $5 let’s trade! And we both win)

- something about the model is overly simplistic, like it produces a statistical distribution that looks like extreme inequality from randomness, but lots of different sorts of distributions can emerge from aggregating random (for eg a normal distribution several dice and looking at their totals).

dhruval··on A city experiments with paying people not to be annoying
A daily reward would be much more psychologically motivating than a stipend.
dhruval··on Show HN: Obsidian Canvas – An infinite space for your ideas
I tried Obsidian last year but wasn't enough of a value add for me to make the switch from my normal note taking program.

Now I have to give it another go. This looks amazing.

dhruval··on Indian tech workers in Silicon Valley protest immigration discrimination
It is actually based country of birth rather than origin / citizenship.

Sure every immigration system as to make choices, but ideally you want to make intelligent choices.

The current system makes no sense unless your goal is to specifically limit Indian / Chinese born from people getting green cards while also letting in large numbers of them to work on H1B indefinitely.

dhruval··on Indian tech workers in Silicon Valley protest immigration discrimination
Effectively penalizes countries with a larger population (India and China) systemically, India is similar to the EU in terms of ethnic, religious, linguistic and cultural diversity yet each EU country is treated as a seperate entity. Indian States are not.
dhruval··on Linux, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft want to break the Google Maps monopoly
Or the Wikipedia foundation.

Sadly it seems many of these large open source foundations are prone to mission creep and stagnation.

dhruval··on Binance is trying to calm investors, but its finances remain a mystery
Former auditor here:

1. That is standard wording for the report of "agreed upon procedures". This is not an audit it just means they only did a certain set of procedures rather than an audit.

2. Audits aren't really able to detect all fraud, especially if the management is sophisticated. But if the fraud results in obvious material discrepancies then the audit would catch it and the auditor would resign (unless they are corrupt in which case you end up with Enron where a Big 5 auditor was complicit, so now we have the Big 4).

3. In the Binance case, the obvious weird thing is they only did these very limited agreed upon procedures on 'Bitcoin', but other crypto currencies they claim to hold were not verified at the same time. Also their other liabilities are not verified.

(As some examples: they could have some non-BTC liabilities to offset the Bitcoin or CZ moved some personal bitcoin to wallets or converted some other holdings, all sorts of possibilities. Would be hard to hide from a full audit but in this case very easy to hide. )

dhruval··on FTX’s collapse was a crime, not an accident
Hard to take anything he says at face value. He is a lying sociopath.

Are there independent records of these donations.

dhruval··on Asian faiths try to save swastika symbol corrupted by Hitler
Good point, I meant it is a loan word.

In the era of socially sensitive language, I would like to see the Nazi swastika referred to with the German term, to rehabilitate the term swastika.

If you are against socially engineering language to make it more culturally sensitive via things like gender pronouns, removing certain slurs etc. Then ok at least that is a consistent ethical position, and understandable.

But if you support the use of more inclusive language, then this would be my request.

dhruval··on Young women earn more than men in some US cities
I am out of the loop on this stuff, but I vaguely remember hearing / reading this number from multiple sources in the context of workplace sexism.

What is the misinformation here ?
