dhritzkiv··on GraphQL kinda sucks
Yeah, I caught that too. A lot of comments sounds like they're relying on Prisma/Husara/etc. to map directly to the database. I'm sure it's fine for some use cases (such as when prototyping), but I prefer to design and build out GraphQL APIs with a more UI/product-centric approach, which hide most of the database details.

That's true in that specific context (most websites in Safari) in that specific orientation. The extra screen real estate you get in native apps, or even Safari in portrait orientation is not nothing.

Why means test for student loan forgiveness? It adds complexity/loopholes to be more trouble than it's worth, and it's likely not necessary: wealthy families don't need student loans, so those with a large familial net worth with student loans should be a rounding error. In addition, those from wealthy families are more likely to take unpaid internships, thereby qualifying for 'low income' in that way.

That being said, if you're not building from source (you're running an LTS version of node on a supported platform), you don't need to worry about python or many of the build deps.

Dumb question w.r.t washing machine: don't you have to dose detergent in with each load, or do newer machines have some sort of large reservoir? If the former, how would it know if you're running low on detergent?

alternatively, if you need to use anything other than `forEach` for working on the list, you can turn the NodeList into an array using the array spread syntax (equivalent to using Array.from) e.g.

  [...document.querySelectorAll('a')]
  .filter(node => node.getAttribute("data-foo") === "bar")

dhritzkiv··on All IoT devices Bricked after Insteon shuts down?
Local IoT switches (ZWave/Zigbee/etc.) are kind of the best of both worlds: being able to switch off at the wall, plus being able to control digitally/remotely.

For example, I love being able to switch off the living room's lights, as well as all adjacent rooms' lights, all with two taps on my iPhone, without getting up from the couch. Also nice is turning the lights on/off at certain hours of the day, or when certain triggers occur.

My setup goes: ZWave wall switch <-> (Raspberry Pi) [ZWave hub <-> Mqtt <-> Homebridge] <-> AppleTV (Home Hub) <-> iPhone. Despite all of the moving parts, this has been 100% reliable for me with near-zero latency. It even works well when I'm away from home (albeit with a tenfold increase in latency)

Unfortunately, this setup is not a low/no configuration one, so it's not a solution for the vast majority of people, and is why internet connected IoT (Nest/Alexa/Hue/Insteon) are as popular as they are.

> When you start an Airplay stream on your phone directed at an Apple TV, the Apple TV doesn't send a switch input command.

Oh? My Apple TV 4K (2021) turns on the TV and receiver when I start AirPlay, and the receiver switches the input to the AppleTV if it wasn't already on it. This works whether the TV+receiver were on or off. My TV is a Sharp from ~2013, and the receiver is a Yamaha also from around the same time.

dhritzkiv··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
Nothing about timekeeping is simple, with or without this change. Not only do some regions already not observe DST (even within the same state/region); some switch to/from DST at different times of year (and this date changes from year to year).

For a timekeeping library (which likely uses a system-level source of data / the IANA tz database) this shouldn't have any effect.

I think they mean they rented/bought Dune to watch, via YouTube's movie platform[1]. The host of the Microsoft Teams video meeting then likely shared their view of the YouTube screen (I don't know how it works in MS Teams, but, for example, I know Jitsi allows a meeting participant to embed a YouTube video for all to watch+listen to. It's surprisingly good quality)

dhritzkiv··on Apple unveils contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone
Good point about a signature not hiding the data. I got my terminology mixed up. I thought it was encoding it in a way so that only the payment processor could see.

But that's not necessarily the case either, as somebody else brought up the fact that identifiers ARE in fact passed to the merchant.

dhritzkiv··on Apple unveils contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone
Interesting! I stand corrected. Thanks.
dhritzkiv··on Apple unveils contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone
I believe while the token is generated once, each transaction is signed with a unique signature (I believe that's the term) that only the payment processor can decipher. The merchant doesn't get any stable/identifiable information that can be used to track you across purchases/sessions/stores.
