dhhdhdsbdb··on The Greening of Paris Makes Its Mayor More Than a Few Enemies
There is a documented history of this kind of thing. See https://www.vox.com/2015/1/15/7551873/jaywalking-history
dhhdhdsbdb··on E*Trade Announces $0 Base Commissions for Online Stock, ETF, and Options Trades
Totally agreed, and I'm not even much of an investor.
dhhdhdsbdb··on Ask HN: Cool stuff that's still completely unregulated?
In the US, regulating sex was a priority that predates the government by a couple hundred years.
dhhdhdsbdb··on Show HN: See Google's Data on Real User Site Performance for Any Site
Can you segment by Geo? It may be that users with slower connections or phones use Google more
dhhdhdsbdb··on Evaluating the effectiveness of Google's “Testing on the Toilet” program [pdf]
I think this is a great way to spread info. You're there, probably doing nothing. And everyone has to pee!
dhhdhdsbdb··on Facebook to Exempt Opinion and Satire from Fact-Checking
Otoh, governments can detain, arrest, or kill you and your family. Regardless of whether you can vote.

Both corporations and governments have a history of bad behavior. But I warrant the government ledger has much worse capacity to do me harm, as well as a few orders of magnitude more deaths caused by their decisions.

dhhdhdsbdb··on Microsoft has removed the “use offline account” option when installing Windows
Im sorry, but I really don't understand your perspective. Does Porsche screw their customers when they charge $500 for an oil change? Is Coach "screwing" it's customer by charging that much for a purse? High five audio devices often don't have cabling that consumer devices do - is that screwing the consumer?

I can appreciate that you don't want to pay that much, but how is it "screwing"?

dhhdhdsbdb··on The Highest Suicide Rate in the World
The amazing book 1491 calls this Holmbergs mistake: that the indigenous people lined in a static world and didn't have the agency to make their own mistakes.
dhhdhdsbdb··on There is no Plan B for dealing with the climate crisis
Are you recommending we don't work this avenue out of a sense of fairness?
dhhdhdsbdb··on Bird populations have declined since 1970 across nearly all habitats
Is this true? I always thought the decline was more often caused by removing habitats. Would be curious to know how this is measured and communicated.
dhhdhdsbdb··on Americans' fear of losing their jobs grows
Otoh, we have far more marketers, professional writers, video editors, programmers, and people who make their own profits via YouTube etc.

And a drastic drop in birth rate should mean fewer people so favor labor.

dhhdhdsbdb··on A bad cup of tea and the birth of modern statistics
this is the book that introduced me to this origin story! It's a very well written, and short, book. Highly recommend.
dhhdhdsbdb··on Ask HN: Why Services like Facebook ads/stripe are closing Venezuelan accounts?
Because the upside of continuing to take money from Venezuela is outweighed by the risk that you miss someone specific, or accidentally sell to someone you're not supposed to.

Why would these companies, already in hot water federally, risk giving any more ammo to their naysayers?

dhhdhdsbdb··on Wikipedia co-founder slams the ‘appalling’ internet
Sure, but it's naive to think everyone will get along if we just wish for it hard enough. There need to be ways of limiting communities to subgroups.

Anecdotally, an example is ladies tea events in social circles. If you ask women who are in to this, there is a different atmosphere by having only women present.

Do guys want to join? Sure, but that's too bad. Not everything has to be for everyone.

dhhdhdsbdb··on How Virginia Won Amazon's HQ2
Yes, because the suburbs are always a good option for families who aren't into the whole collective living thing.

And it makes sense. When you have a kid, that kid is your priority. There's less incentice to be willing to sacrifice for others who aren't your genetic progeny.

Full disclosure, I personally think having a kid is the single most selfish act a human can do. I don't mind it obviously, but do observe that it's amazing when other people expect me to prefer their offsprings' benefit over anything else.

No, you're already looking out for them. I think it makes sense to treat them like any other human, since that's all they are to me.
