Chasing keyboard dollars instead of my dreams. I'm just here to say profound things and learn about the world. Looking for software work in PDX.

Not reasonable or accurate, neither is yours.

No lol, I'm just a fanboy. They sell a lot of things I buy, and one of the only physical stores like it around.

I don't really see the problem there to be honest. When it comes to electronics at the garage sale, I usually don't purchase unless I can tell that it's working or isn't difficult to fix. There could be a number of things wrong with electronics that don't show on the surface. One of the downsides to the garage sale is that sales are final. Basically, you took a chance on a risky second-hand product and the fortune wasn't in your favor.

Sorry I should have made that more clear haha

Now you're being rude and inflammatory. You're not worth the effort to respond to.

What items were broken? The dividend is compensation for paying full price where a sale is a discount on the full price.

I don't think REI moves as much ski/snowboard gear as a more local shop would, but they have seasonal sales on the same items you just mentioned every year, and their anniversary sale is usually pretty good. Not to mention their outlet store often has additional sales on items that haven't sold, plus the garage sale.

For instance: https://www.wired.com/story/rei-anniversary-sale-outdoor-dea...

The best 'deal' I found at REI was a ENO DoubleNest hammock for $12 at the garage sale, perfect condition. A near second would be a Black Diamond Access (I think) insulated hoodie for about $100, lasting me more than 6 years as my insulated layer for climbing, snowboarding, all around and casual use.

Agreed. I've been a member for a while now and REI's standard prices are pretty average if not a little high, but they have enough really good sales during the year (plus the member discounts) to make up for anything you'd consider high price. Not to mention the garage sales can be a gold mine.

REI is one of my favorite stores in the world. It's hard for me to come up with a reason not to like them.

I chatted with a rep last night and they were very responsive, said "our managers are listening to customer feedback."

Don't forget, Black Diamond laid off much of the Utah engineering staff and their climbing cams will now be made in China... Not sure what other gear is taking that fate. Looks like it's Metolious Master Cams for me now.

A few weeks ago I went to see Haystack Rock off the Oregon coast and I just stood there in the tide looking at this giant rock sticking out the water, absorbing the salt water, brisk air and sounds of crashing waves. It was magical. Everyone else around me was only looking at their camera, I'm not sure what they absorbed.

From my experience, people are upset about "Mexicans are coming for your jobs!" because of employers hiring illegal immigrants to do labor work at a discount.
dgzl··on My company sold for $100M and I got zilch – how can that be?
What's baffling about it? If someone were to only read the title and not the article and came to the comments section, a summary about the title would be desired. What you're probably baffled about is why do people only read the title and not the article.

This analogy clearly doesn't hold up. It's more like a very successful private broadcast channel, but where making an effective public broadcast channel is too difficult for the government, so we pretend that the private channel is "like a public channel".

No company owns all the internet, thus using the analogy that a few companies own the entire radio spectrum doesn't make sense.

I can't really help you with networking, and I'm not the kind of person who thinks things like being high-ranked entitles you to something other than bragging rights. I certainly don't know enough about the blogging scene to help you there.

I don't see the justification in calling HN a Boy's Club either, as there are zero barriers to participate other than a computer. That term is usually used when people exclude women from the group because they are women, but nobody here knows or cares what sex you are.

I'm sorry for your situations, I really am. My mother and I used to be homeless and now she's entirely dependant on the government for survival. It's heartbreaking because as I grew older, I realized she had essentially done it to herself.

Yes, I think your attitude is a direct contributor to some of your problems. No, I don't think it's easy to have a good attitude when you're in the gutter. I wish I had more advice, but my options about these things are pretty comprehensive and this isn't the best place to dig into it.

>A whole lot of this BS is rooted in the idea that a woman's sexuality is a prize to be won by an "eligible" male -- ie a man who earns enough to take care of her. There is a subtext of ownership there.

Both sides perpetuate this, but I see this coming from women much more than men.

Apple is undoubtedly a contentious company, and many of their fans are highly obsessive... I think OP is just letting people know that they're more if a critic than an obsessive fan, thus showing contrast with their praise of the feature.

In my perspective, these are other devices entirely, like smart speakers and those video hubs the FAANG companies produce, or maybe entrance cameras.. Some reasoning: what kind of television doesn't have speakers.

dgzl··on Where you are born is more predictive of your future than any other factor
My family was poor but thankfully we lived more rural than anything, which is a little different than city-poor. My biggest problem growing up was the psychological abuse my mom would dish out to pretty much anyone who looked at her. When I was young I thought it was cool, in a rebellious way. It took me a while to realize she was actually the black sheep of the family. She had worked herself a serious alcohol addiction, diabetes, lung disease, and burned just about every bridge she's made. Seeing her in a helpless state and realizing that I wasn't really headed for anything better, I glued my eyes to my first CS textbook until the ideas made sense.
