Chasing keyboard dollars instead of my dreams. I'm just here to say profound things and learn about the world. Looking for software work in PDX.

dgzl··on Wisconsin Supreme Court strikes down stay-at-home order that closed businesses
>But what about the US? If all government is corrupt, if all taxes are sin, if all leaders on the other side are traitors to the cause, the people will never respect those in charge.

>The people don't obey the "orders" nor follow advice. Then they wrap themselves in the flag and actively work against the measures in the name of freedom.

I'm strongly against big government, disagree with most R's and D's, will gladly wrap myself in the flag and I'm still quarantining for the most part. Just because you support freedom doesn't mean you're ignorant to this pandemic or methods to reduce spread. It just means you're protective of your rights because government has a very long history of using these kind of opportunities to infringe on them.

The other countries you speak about have already lost their rights, or never had them to begin with.

dgzl··on The economic devastation of the pandemic could kill more people than the virus
>I was referring to the immediate threat of deaths resulting from present or nearly-present economic circumstances.

Are the hospitals not treating people in immediate threat of dying? Is California not housing the homeless in hotels? Is there not an extensive support network?

I don't think this virus and "short term" work together.

> My point was simply that we have more than enough resources

Who is "we" in this case? Because the State of California is in massive debt as far as I can tell, and they're still drowning in problems.

dgzl··on The economic devastation of the pandemic could kill more people than the virus
> to prevent economic devastation

> Just needs enough gas for the next station

You don't prevent economic devastation by feeding a broken system all the resources, you prevent it by fixing the broken system.

Edit: here's an example. I joined new work and their documentation was a complete mess. I could have saved time immediately and stuck to their busted structure, just shoving documents wherever similar documents existed, but instead I overhauled the entire structure and content, saving everyone time in the long run.

Guess which option works better.

dgzl··on The economic devastation of the pandemic could kill more people than the virus
Thanks for thinking it's more important for citizens to get free cash instead of job-creators, seems like a good time to buy a new gun.
dgzl··on The economic devastation of the pandemic could kill more people than the virus
Agreed. You can't just dump money into citizens' pockets with no expectation of return. Giving an engine gas doesn't make the engine more efficient at using the gas, it just let's us get to the next mechanic. And that's what we need, good mechanics. So how do we spend our money, buying enough gas to get part way to our goal, or spend the money on the mechanics to make our engine efficient enough so we can get to our goal with less gas than we need?
dgzl··on New Lenovo ThinkPad Range with Ryzen 4000 and 4000 Pro Mobile
Overall I think you'd still be faster in keyboard, but gestures and such offer a lot in terms of simplicity which is a fair trade a lot of the time. If your workflow revolves around typing however, I would still put trackpoint above.
dgzl··on New Lenovo ThinkPad Range with Ryzen 4000 and 4000 Pro Mobile
I think the advantage is bigger than you believe, and I would bet you mix typing/trackpad more than you believe also.
dgzl··on New Lenovo ThinkPad Range with Ryzen 4000 and 4000 Pro Mobile
As the other commenter said, the benefit comes from keeping your fingers on home-row, not precision.
dgzl··on New Lenovo ThinkPad Range with Ryzen 4000 and 4000 Pro Mobile
I've been running Arch on X1Y2 no problem
dgzl··on New Lenovo ThinkPad Range with Ryzen 4000 and 4000 Pro Mobile
Same. Once I learned how to use it, I can't go back.

Recently my work laptop was switched to a Dell without the nub and I noticed reduced workflow immediately.

dgzl··on FCC forced by court to ask the public again for feedback on net neutrality
It's been a while since I've looking into the subject, but from what I remember... the idea was that Telecom could sell slow-lane service at a discount. This would benefit people who would rather save money than purchase fast-lane service, which I imagine is more people than you'd think. If fast-lane public WiFi is available pretty much everywhere in town, and you're really trying to not spend money, then you might opt for slow-lane traffic at a discount at home and use public internet for you're more demanding transfers. Alternatively if you only want access to specific services and you can save money for doing so, then... same idea.

Do you honestly think society is going to become more responsible with their private data? Because I don't.

dgzl··on How to Find New Music
If you're looking for new music but don't want to dig into it, I suggest just looking for remixes of songs you already love.

Myself and a friend became radio hosts for our college radio (KBVR, national award winners) and I realized this was a great opportunity to learn about and discover new music. Over the next year, every week I would go onto YouTube and follow suggestions from some music I already knew until I got into weird stuff that I'd never heard before. Before long I found thriving subcultures of not only fresh and modern EDM, but also really awesome remixes of existing music. Finding remixes of music I already loved was a thrilling experience, I've never had so much fun looking for music online.

One day I found this gem of a Kenny Chesney "American Kids" remix and ripped it to my laptop to play on that week's show. Maybe a few days after, the song was gone due to copyright violation. Now I can't find any trace of this glorious mix online, only in my personal stash.

If anyone is interested, I highly suggest Majestic Casual on YouTube, and The Magician on SoundCloud.

dgzl··on 23andMe lays off 100 people as DNA test sales decline
I was very close to buying this a few years ago and I decided against it. Then later it was revealed that these companies give away and sell your data... How surprising. Now I'm too creeped out to care.
dgzl··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
I'm strongly against abandoning equality for equity, and I don't agree that STEM academia and industry are internally sexist.
dgzl··on Boeing employees mocked FAA in internal messages before 737 Max disasters
> if you're human, then you get the situation we are in.

Fixed that for you...

dgzl··on Boeing employees mocked FAA in internal messages before 737 Max disasters
To me, your attitude is that problems shouldn't exist because we should solve them, as if there's a magical process that guarantees perfection. But what happens when we miss something? What happens when an employee has a thought about an engineering technique that maybe didn't quite make sense, but speaking out would disrupt an entire chain of command within the culture we invest into day-in day-out, and they get distracted by one of the million ways to do it these days and don't end up dealing with their thought? What if we miss this moment and some things get by that shouldn't. Is this not human to some degree?
dgzl··on Boeing employees mocked FAA in internal messages before 737 Max disasters
That's just not how massive companies work. Sometimes the leaf-level employee knows a secret to improve the entire system in significant ways, but they'll never be heard. Sometimes the root employee (we'll say CEO) catches a earful from any given section of their company they don't like, regardless of how accepted or pervasive it the sentiment is, and that employee could be picked from the tree. It's just how it works in a massive structure. Someone at one end thinks the values and ethic is one way, and the people at the other end have an entirely different understanding.

dgzl··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions? (2010)
Like some kind of justified war?
dgzl··on How strong is your knot?
Forgive me, I thought we were talking about with the follow-through. In this case, I guess it's just as easy if you practice, which most people don't. People do practice the overhand knot though.

So, an overhand knot is likely easier for most people, where a figure-eight would be better for those who practice.

dgzl··on Apple is suing iOS virtualization vendor Corellium for violating DMCA
I don't think so. In my experience, people here are just as critical to Apple as other companies.
dgzl··on Apple is suing iOS virtualization vendor Corellium for violating DMCA
>because it's Apple.

I think you're being assuming here.

dgzl··on How strong is your knot?
I can think of at least one situation where an overhand knot is better than a figure-eight, where speed and ease is more important than strength.
dgzl··on How strong is your knot?
As for climbing, don't forget the double-fisherman's... To tie two ropes together for a double-rope rappel. It's the knot equivalent of a wrist-handshake.
dgzl··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions? (2010)
