dgregd··on Addressing Spotify’s Claims
> Spotify seeks to keep all the benefits of the App Store ecosystem

How about ISPs? Maybe they also should get 30% commission from all music downloaded through their networks?

After reading Steve Job biography I read now the Jony Ive book. And I must say that the current Apple has no taste. Taste in terms of whole product function and coolness. It looks like industrial product designers and greedy people took over the company. Do they really have to squeeze each dollar from customers and app developers and destroy their magic brand? How they are now different from Exxon Mobil or Louis Vuitton?

dgregd··on Facebook backtracks after removing Warren ads calling for Facebook breakup
I would say this is ordinary politics, an obvious calculated provocation we see every day.

What is surprising is a such dump FB reaction. Why such inteligent people make such dump moves? Are they really that arogant? Maybe that arrogance is caused by revenue increases after all these scandals. Maybe they treated politicians in the same way for many times, but in other countries.

dgregd··on Approximating CNNs with Bag-of-Local-Features Models [pdf]
It seems that texture detection is for NN the simplest and easiest way to recognize objects. I guess early animal vision system used to work this way. Then predators and prey developed camouflage and mimicry, to fool texture detection NNs. So there was strong evolutionary pressure to recognize shapes, which is much harder task, but essential for survival. Probably that's why people see in the picture a cat (predator) and ConvNet recognizes most obvious thing (elephant) in terms of statistics.

As far I know Gnome 4 constraint-based layout [1] is still in planning phase. So how devs are going to build responsive UIs for different screen sizes? PS. I work on a Ubuntu laptop.

dgregd··on Arm Announces Client CPU Roadmap For Laptops
Two weeks ago I bought a small Zotac box with Intel Celeron N3060. The whole system with 4GB RAM and SSD drive consumes 8W. It is good for backups. It runs Ubuntu 18.04 w/o any problems.
dgregd··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: goal worth pursuing?
> Under Windows 10 the new precision drivers are fantastic

So it would be reasonable to limit that new Linux driver to support only Windows Precision compatible touch-pads. It seems that variety of different touch-pad hardware is causing that problems with creating a good Linux driver.

I deleted the old comment because I thought it was connected to another deleted comment. You can check your web server logs and see that I deleted the old in the same time I posted the new one.

And I think that the comment is very relevant to the current discussion. It talks about how to increase the safety of self-driving cars.

Please answer why it is not relevant in your opinion. Because from my point of view it looks like you don't read it before downvoting.

BTW HN is not complaint with GDPR. After some time I cannot delete my comments.

So much talk about LIDAR and other sensors. Why nobody talks about obvious idea of Road Object Message Bus? ROMB is a protocol where each road object (a traffic light, a sign, a car, a bicycle, etc.) transmits info about itself. A car could broadcast its direction vector, intention to turn, any non ROMB moving object it sees. A traffic light could broadcast current state and when it is going to change. That information would greatly enhance overall security, especially during rain and snow conditions, when even LIDAR fails.

Self-driving is such important (just after eliminating combustion engines) that we could upgrade existing cars with cheap ROMB boxes. Vehicle GPS tracking system costs about $30. ROMB box would cost about $60. Let's say that from 2027 all cars have to have a ROMB box to enter a downtown ...

Let's say your car ROMB received info about the white truck, while your car cameras and vision recognition systems see just a cloud and any truck in 100 m range.

ROMB purpose is not to replace cameras or LIDARs, but to extend gathered info.

dgregd··on Governments have overestimated the economic returns of higher education
During communism in Poland there was 1 hour of religion classes per week. Classes were run in Catholic Church buildings. Now there are 2 hours of religion classes in school buildings. Pupils who do not want to go to religion classes can have a free time.

Do you really think that changing for example 1 hour of religion lesson per week to 1 hour of chemistry would change a lot?

I doubt whether the ethics lesson in your case would result in less religion intolerance. Someone who is that much ashamed of his own country should simply emigrate, as President Komorowski advised.

PS. Polish Catholic Church also overestimated the impact of religion classes for practicing Catholics. Now less people attend Sunday masses.

dgregd··on Canada to Scrap IBM Payroll Plan Gone Awry Costing $1B
The only solution to tax / accounting law and software problems is to create a reference accounting system and set it as a applicable law. In other words, to describe the law in unambiguous language.

Do we really have to write a law in the same way as Romans did? Math as a science made progress after it invented a new precise language for itself.

I'm not talking about the whole law. Only about that according to which the software is built. Since no one calculates taxes today by hand, it is worth to write the law so that it can be easily applied.

dgregd··on How to get your first 100k active users
I'm an Android developer and a few times in 2017 I confused a Corodva app with a native app. With Chrome 63 and customized over-scroll behavior Twitter PWA is really impressive, no reason to install native Twitter app. 2018 might be breakthrough year for hybrid and PWA apps.

dgregd··on Stencil – A reusable web component generator
> Like many others - I dropped Cordova and Ionic in favor of React-Native.

Few years ago PhoneGap apps were really slow and ugly. So I built native Android app. This year I started building hybrid Ionic 3 app because it has to work on Android and iOS. It works good enough on Nexus 5 (Snapdragon 800). The biggest problem is 4-5 seconds startup time. Stencil and component lazy loading should greatly reduce that startup time (to 1-2 seconds I hope).

dgregd··on Stencil – A reusable web component generator
How Stencil will change Ionic (Angular) apps? As far I understand it will add real lazy loading, which should greatly reduce startup time. What are other benefits?

What about Ionic v4 apps? Will Angular still be used? How we are going to write our app components, they will be based on Angular or Stencil?

What about Cordova hybrid apps? Do you plan to support them or focus exclusively on PWA apps?

dgregd··on China Can’t Sustain Its Debt-Fueled Binge, Moody’s Says

dgregd··on Last major primeval forest in Europe on 'brink of collapse'
European spruce bark beetle [1] infected a large number of trees. That's a fact. Foresters are obliged to protected the forest and do try to this by eliminating infected trees. The first such action was conducted 100 years ago.

Some experts disagree with that method of stopping the beetle plague, and think that the forest should heal itself. Other experts don't want just to watch dying forest and try to do something. Hence the argument.

Because experts are divided, this is a great opportunity to attack the government. Unfortunately there is no substantive discussion, even here on HN.

Try to guess if current Polish government is left or right wing.

dgregd··on Last major primeval forest in Europe on 'brink of collapse'
I wonder how HN will explain this [1]:

"In western North America, the current outbreak of the mountain pine beetle and its microbial associates has destroyed wide areas of lodgepole pine forest, including more than 16 million of the 55 million hectares of forest in British Columbia. The current outbreak in the Rocky Mountain National Park began in 1996 and has caused the destruction of millions of acres of ponderosa and lodgepole pine trees. According to an annual assessment by the state's forest service, 264,000 acres of trees in Colorado were infested by the mountain pine beetle at the beginning of 2013. This was much smaller than the 1.15 million acres that were affected in 2008 because the beetle has already killed off most of the vulnerable trees"

Of course something similar cannot happen in Poland.

dgregd··on The State of Go – Where we are in May 2017
Dart is losing with TypeScript. It seems that outside of Google almost nobody uses Dart.

It'll be interesting to see how Go will cope with Kotlin/Native (in technology preview stage right now)

Kotlin has no unsigned types (JVM language). In embedded / IoT applications that's a downside. It seems that unsigned types are the only major advantage Go has over Kotlin/Native.
